Thanks, but in all honestly, this project didn't lend itself to a mechatronics solution (its a strictly mechanical problem).
The way this worked is that each steel nut was sorted based on the amount of current that was required to lift the nut (there was a laser sensor telling when the nut was off the surface).
I mean, we used the size (height/weight) of the nuts as a sorting criteria, but otherwise it was pretty Mechatronics oriented. Also, the magnet served as a sensor and actuator...
The magnet pick-up was pretty genius! That way you don't need to really distinguish between the two different types of 'medium' sized nuts.... but did it take away from the "mechatronics" part of the sorting? Since that would rely purely on mechanical means to sort the nuts ...?
