THE UNITED STATES COACHES LOST THIS RACE FROM THE START!!!!!, YOU SEE. they were so intent on denying carl lewis the opportunity to run, even though they knew his times were on par with the new world record, set by donnovan bailey, they put a nobody, tim harding, with no international experience, in on the longest leg, 2nd leg. tim montgomery ran faster splits than tim harding and they did not include him in the final.
@djbigsmooth the finals line-up should have been: drummond, marsh, mitchell, lewis. gold and world record. marsh could have been replaced with tim montgomery as marsh had not performed well in the games. marsh still would have earned a gold medal because he ran the preliminary rounds. thank you U.S. COACHES, JACKASSES!!!!!

think about it, brunny surin started a 100m at 80% of his speed and then took off to 100% instantly so he probably ran a 8.6 or 8.7 on the 100m which is completely insane. when he hands it to donovan aint no doubt in his mind that hes already celebrating and poppin champagnes bottles, these 2 were fast and bailey great plus surrin was so underrated but yet so good. What an incredible handoff from gilbert to surin, ive never seen such a clean handoff. Surin was already at speed and there was absolutely no movement from either of them
@pdlpictures - No. I was laughing my head off, the yanks shown up in "their" event, in the US.
How interesting that after Canadians won the 100m and 4x100m, the US started calling the 200m record holder the "world's fastest man", when the 100m holder has always been recognized as fastest. They can't handle losing.
Lead & Gold is terrific! The actual teamplay for it is without a doubt the finest i have experienced in a period of time. If you havent tried this game yet, all your friends are able to down load that video game for zero cost at LeadGoldDownloadXcom (replace X with . ) !
THis was so awesome, i remember this like it was yesterday, donovan bailey was so dominant then and his teammates were perfect, remember when he beat the chicken micheal johnson.
"If you're a Canadian, you've gotta love Saturday nights in Georgia!" I remember that line stricking a chord with me back then and it is a saying that still ruminates in mind on occasion. Oh, that was a great night and one of my top 10 best watched sporting moments of all time.
"Clearly the underdogs in this competition, the best Canada could have hoped for was to hand off to Bailey not too far behind the lead runner. I don't think anyone expected this."
That's bull. Canada was 4 x 100 m World Champion in 1995...
and it's very subtle and only their for a split second - but after the exchange between esmie and gilbert - esmie raises his hand - HE ALREADY KNOWS IT"S OVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he knew he was the key - and he knew he just BLASTED OFF - hahaha - i still get chills watching this - watched it with me mates - and we all WENT CRAZY - then got absolutely hammered lol - thx boys - a memory that will last forever
what a race - what a frigging race - the exchange between Esmie and Gilbert was absolutely perfect - seamless - bailey doesn't raise his arm they crush the record
Never bought Canada as huge underdogs in the race. Surin was vastly underrated. Once Esmie gave them a good start, it was over because the USA's biggest edge was supposed to be in the first two legs.
In fact, before this race, the US didn't win only if they didn't make clean exchanges. Which means that before this, if the US made it all the way through the 400m - they won! That's pretty good, huh?
Yer absolutely right too, mtee111, Canada focuses mainly on hockey and ..speaking of, going for 6 straight in World Juniors and going for Gold in men and womens hockey at the olympics here in Vancouver in February.
This race made me so proud of being canadian! The greatest canadian achievement ive ever seen ( better then Salt Lake 2002). We need more Donovan in Canada!!
Agreed. Surin's leg really sealed it for Canada. It was tight until he took the baton from Gilbert. All 4 men ran extremely well, but Surin stole the race.
Canada were worthy winners, but certainly the underdogs. The fastest that they ever ran was the 37.69 that won this race. The Americans, by contrast, had won 37.06 in the heats. The Americans had the faster unit. However, the Americans handled the baton terribly in the final, while the Canadians were absolutely textbook perfect. Thus, the deserved victory.
Also, I see a lot of CBC programming. American networks aren't any less balanced toward the USA than CBC is toward Canada.
When it comes to calling live events you're right, but CBC at least shows events and profiles of athlete's from all over the world. And NBC as a whole was pretty lame for continually calling Michael Johnson the world's fastest man after winning the 200. 100 winner was and is always considered the fastest.
37.06 in the heats? Was that in your dream or was it in Mario and Sonic at the Olympics? The world record is 37.10 for Jamaica. The fastest the US has ever run is 37.40.
"you gotta love Saturday nights in Georgia!" RIP Don Whittman; a great call of one of Canada's greatest ever sports moments. It wasn't even close, just look at how big the lead was BEFORE Bailey got the baton.
Easy killer. I was born after the '72 Summit series. But how typical that a great sports moment in Canada just HAS to be a hockey one. Expand your horizons my friend. Theres more to life and more to Canada than just hockey. For me, this is my moment. Thats what make sports so great. We all have our favourite moment. This one is mine...and it doesnt make me an idiot. Youre the idiot for being so narrow minded...
I was born after 72 as well. The 72 series was more then just a hockey tournament,it brought canadians together like no other sporting event in history. If you want to make the 4 by 100 relay your best "moment" fine but dont speak for all canadians by saying that its "hands down the greatest sporting event in canadian history".Remember the players in 72 were born and raised in Canada unlike the relay team who resided from other countries and HAD to race here. Not because they wanted to!
Again dude, thats your opinion. Its all good. Im not speaking for all canadians. Its totally open for debate. Thats what great sporting moments are all about. This is the moment I have picked as the greatest. The '96 Olympic Games also brought Canadians together. Perhaps not in the same fashion it did in '72 but its is still an historic moment, and you have to respsect that and my opinion. I respect yours. And the fact that those guys were born elsewhere is completely irrelevant...
@nbtube uh...not even close but it was a nice win you dube. Just remember that Donovan Bailey won the 100 metres that year....plus all the great hockey victories beat this hands down
@kokoth why you mad? it's true. every country on earth does athletics. there are literally 5-6 countries that are competitive at hockey, and we're supposed to act proud when they win. it's as if the us acted proud at winning the american football gold medal
Robert Emsie came to our school in Vancouver today! He was the first one to run for Team Canada! He was the one that had "blast off relay" on his head!
well, it's true that sports highlights are FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR better and more exciting with the original commentary than highlights with music, no matter how exciting the music might be.
the part missing here is and Bruny Surin, he has the lead it appears that he's going to hand in frony in it appears to Donovan Bailey, a clean exchange
Those Canadians were classy winners! no showboating after the win! Class Class class, not like the arrogant cocky sprinters of today that Maurice Greene inspired!
Let me explain one thing... My Coach and good friend of the family (Mike Murray, look him up) has coached these guys before. I asked him who had the best hand offs in 4X100 history.. He told me that this specific team had the best hand offs bar none....
LOOK AT THOSE HAND OFFS!
NEARLY NOTHING WAS WASTED! You dont drop the baton in the mans hands.. you PUSH IT STRAIGHT OUT! like a piston
This memory for me as a Canadian is right up there with Canucks run in 94, olympic gold Juniors, Women, Mens Hockey 2004. Joe Carter homerun world series(Toronto). This run and Donovan's solo 100M are memories I will never lose and they mean alot to us Canadians. Trained here, lived here, and Won for here.
I was at a bar on Front Street in Toronto watching that night. Aside from the Jays winning the World Series, I've never seen people go so crazy. Donovan's 100m win was fantastic, but this one was even better. The Americans were all cocky, talking trash, and expecting to win...and my fellow countrymen just killed them. Sadly, I think it's going to be a LONG time before Canada ever reaches such heights again, if ever. Are we even in China???
this has to be my favourite piece of sports footage ever. rest in piece don wittman - the best call ever. "donovan bailey is POURING it on..." cant believe its 12 years along the road as well. and bailey and i are both 40 lol.
My god I can't believe this was 12 years ago. I remember it like yesterday. I was 13 at the time and I was jumping so high when Bailey crossed the finish line I was almost hitting my head on the roof.
That was a great moment for sure, one that will be remembered by canadians forever. Its a shame we havent even got close to those glory days again due to the lack of funding for athletes dedicated to make us canadians proud. If we want those results we gotta put in the investment.
That day I was at the Montreal olympic stadium for an Expos-Braves game. Right before the game started the announcer said the 4x100m relay final was about to start, so we could see it on big screen. It was so incredible to cheer them winning the gold along with 35 000 other fans. I think the crowd didn't shout that loud for the baseball game after that!
I'm excited just to imagine that atmosphere in the olympic stadium. Either now I feel my body some exciting when I see this run. Thay's was amazing. So lucky you was too...
Oh, If you're a Canadian, you have to love Saturday nights in Georgia!

"well if you're canadian, you have to love saturday nights in georgia"---RIP Don Wittman, great call of a great race for canada
Giua1973 3 years ago 24
Completely agree with you; it was a hell of a moment on its own, but Wittman's call just made it that much more special.
dskinner81 in reply to Giua1973 (Show the comment) 3 years ago 2
well, it's true that sports highlights are FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR better and more exciting with the original commentary than highlights with music, no matter how exciting the music might be.

they were the best, I still get chills as a very proud Canadian, Simply the best!!! they were all the key!! But Surin and Bailey sure turned it on!!
Mantracker67 3 years ago
Those Canadians were classy winners! no showboating after the win! Class Class class, not like the arrogant cocky sprinters of today that Maurice Greene inspired!
trueguinnessking 3 years ago 6
Let me explain one thing... My Coach and good friend of the family (Mike Murray, look him up) has coached these guys before. I asked him who had the best hand offs in 4X100 history.. He told me that this specific team had the best hand offs bar none....
LOOK AT THOSE HAND OFFS!
NEARLY NOTHING WAS WASTED! You dont drop the baton in the mans hands.. you PUSH IT STRAIGHT OUT! like a piston
When recieving.. fingers pointed
|
V DOWN thumb squared with the rest of fingers..

"If you're a Canadian you have to love Saturday nights in Georgia!"
Just perfect!
RIP Don Wittman

With the music mixed with Wittman's call, I, as a proud Canadian, got chills watching this, especially the moment of that quote. Great moment for us.

Loved this race more than any other. I served Bruny and Donovan at a restaurant I worked at a long time ago, that was awesome! Great guys!

Wicked race. The US sucks and dopes all the time.
cambodianmilk 3 years ago 5
Wasn't there a big hoo-ha about whether the US were going to run Carl lewis in this race?
In the end he didn't, but Bailey's interview was classic afterwards - "Carl Lewis or no Carl Lewis , we were going to kick their ass anyway!"
LOL.
teamspirit5 3 years ago 5
I was at a bar on Front Street in Toronto watching that night. Aside from the Jays winning the World Series, I've never seen people go so crazy. Donovan's 100m win was fantastic, but this one was even better. The Americans were all cocky, talking trash, and expecting to win...and my fellow countrymen just killed them. Sadly, I think it's going to be a LONG time before Canada ever reaches such heights again, if ever. Are we even in China???
bkelley426 3 years ago 6
this has to be my favourite piece of sports footage ever. rest in piece don wittman - the best call ever. "donovan bailey is POURING it on..." cant believe its 12 years along the road as well. and bailey and i are both 40 lol.
koho68steve 3 years ago 9
My god I can't believe this was 12 years ago. I remember it like yesterday. I was 13 at the time and I was jumping so high when Bailey crossed the finish line I was almost hitting my head on the roof.
Flexfuel306 3 years ago 4
this and Donovan's 100m gold were probably the 2 biggest moments in canadian summer olympic history for sure
RJ8812 3 years ago 7
That was a great moment for sure, one that will be remembered by canadians forever. Its a shame we havent even got close to those glory days again due to the lack of funding for athletes dedicated to make us canadians proud. If we want those results we gotta put in the investment.

That day I was at the Montreal olympic stadium for an Expos-Braves game. Right before the game started the announcer said the 4x100m relay final was about to start, so we could see it on big screen. It was so incredible to cheer them winning the gold along with 35 000 other fans. I think the crowd didn't shout that loud for the baseball game after that!
LT21AK27 4 years ago
I'm excited just to imagine that atmosphere in the olympic stadium. Either now I feel my body some exciting when I see this run. Thay's was amazing. So lucky you was too...
