I am reading books, listening to CDs by Thomas Ashley-Farrand and in these he explains the history and origin (for the westerner) of these anthropomorphic symbols in Hinduism. Ganesha is the son (one of the sons) of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The stories are helpful to understand who and what Ganesha is and does.

im a american black woman and i love the hindu culture i have a mala and i do puja b4 sunrise and i know the mantra and i know how to cook indian food and i put coconut oil in my hair daily i admire the indian culure i love ganesha!!!!!!!!! the remover of all obstacle "aum ekadantaya vidmahi vankratundya dhimahi tunni dinti prachodoyat" (my spelling is bad too sorry!!
I love Hindu culture too and attend Bhajan when I am able. I am an American of European heritage and love east indian food. I use coconut oil for my hair and chapped hands and skin. I hope you get to go to India that is my dream too.I think if I go I won't want to come back.
