I like this. I think Reason is the part of your brain judging based on mistakes you've made, where as Emotion only cares about what you want. That's why Reason wasn't born until the child faced the consequences from his mistakes.
Guys chill out, this is from the 40's, from a different time. Disney doesn't hate 'chubby' people. In fact, in the 1940s being 160 lbs woman was fashionable. It's just saying desire, as a general emotion, makes u forget common sense and go overboard sometimes. It's not racist because it doesn't make fun of any race. Emotions in general can be easily manipulated with fear as a key, that's a common political tactic. Also, IT'S JUST A CARTOON. Personally I liked it.
Disney obviously had no idea what an average male looked like. Lol.
It's too bad things aren't this simple in real life. A more realistic metaphor would have had Reason become sick or misguided. Fascism doesn't succeed just because people listen only to their emotions.
@SenorCatbutter Real reason: To set an example and send a message to America's worthy foe called the Soviet Union. The Japanese empire was entirely broken and surrounded when those bombs were dropped. A peaceful detonation would have ended the war, but the carnage and aftermath was the true goal. After those bastards exploded, Josif Stalin wouldn't dare open fire on his lingering Yankee comrades.
How come the Redheads are always the barbaric ,though most of the red heads in my family are over achievers hmm, does that mean that they are more emotionally driven & that's why they are more adventurous? who knows
@mikisct Interesting comment. I'm sure you must be aware that red is the color of blood, and perhaps you're also aware of redness in ancient societies were the Greek Typhon had red hair and so did Esau and so did several others, aha, Rhadamanthus, also had hair.
It's definitely an ancient belief which ever way to take it.
Such a delightful story ruined by propaganda. but I saw it later on The Wonderful World Of Disney retooled as a lesson on society or something, without the Nazi allusions.
Oh, old-school Disney animation. I wonder what Walt would say if he knew that future generations would watch these films on YouTube and laugh at how outdated they are.
I believe, during the Nazi scene, where Reason is being weakened, Emotion is only trying to be an Emotion that loves his country, his freedom, and his life.
I believe, during the Nazi scene, where Reason is being weakened, Emotion is only trying to be an Emotion that loves his country, his freedom, and his life.
Ow man, this is propaganda as well. You don't attack to gain freedom, you defend the liberty. Many wars intend to spread freedom and democracy, the sad truth is that the only thing they spread is pain, misery and restriction of many liberties. So don't give me no crap about freedom ;) Being free is being free to choose and I would never choose to go to war nor would I choose to be attacked by a bunch of morons flying a plane. Would you?
@TheLisagrey seems more like a humorous caricature than an attempt at making him scary, and they never really said that emotion should be completely kicked out.
not saying this isn't outdated in many ways (the super-sexist stuff for instance) but given its time it's still pretty damn well made.
The world economy is about to go down the tubes because the the chief of the International Monetary Fund felt the impulse to rape a hotel chambermaid. Reason and emotion indeed...
PS Does anyone think Mr & Miss Emotion resemble Fred and Wilma Flintstone?
After saying, "You shouldn't have slapped him; he was cute," did the Female Emotion just ask her, "Do you want to be an old maid?" If so, what is she talking about?
You know a cartoon is powerful when it still affects you in the future. This one is a good example considering WWII has been over for 60-70 years and yet it affected me as if I had just seen it in theaters during the 1940s.
This animation is ideal to study the role of Reason and Emotions in the development of thinking. If interested in learning more I strongly recommend reading the book: "An Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology" by Ayn Rand which explains also tremendously good the development of thinking and of rational selfishness.
Fear = Fox news/conservatives/ religion can only harm
Sympathy= I must educate the world/I am a minority and abused/ The world owes me
Pride= I am right/ Obama is God/ We must submit to socialism
Hate = Everone who isn't politically correct must be silenced or eliminated/ Fox News is bad/ Rush Limbaugh is evil/ Church who help are driven only by selfish reasons
You know, even if you were to ignore the meat of the cartoon (being the whole Hitler deal) this cartoon is still pretty damn phylosophical and useful.
