  • Bravo to BBC for putting these up! I've only been a fan for less than a year. I've managed to watch all of the new series, and now I can watch the classic series. Wooo!!!

  • for some reason at 9:23 when she had the knife freaked me out. first im all easy going and then psycho is right there witht the knife.

  • FUCK COCO POPS !

  • the technical name for this story is inside the spaceship. but since no one cares i dont either. :D

  • I want a Tardis and . . . an ice cold glass of milk from that machine! Grew up watching Dr. Who and though this one is a tad before my time, it's just as wonderful to watch. Ta very much like for posting. :o)o:

  • Wow, having hardly seen any Classic Who, this is brilliant :) Even though it's in black and white, with a different Doctor, it's still the exact same show that I'm watching in 2010. Long live Doctor Who!

  • Rest in peace William Hartnell

  • The lack of respect towards Hartnell and the rest of the cast from some people on here really disturbs me. And, as others have said, you can't watch this in isolation, you need to watch it together with An Unearthly Child and The Daleks. Without these stories proving a success at the time, you would have had the recent post 2005 show or David Tennant to squee over.

Show some respect to the history of the show or piss off.

  • practically susan went on with his boyfriend on the dalek invasion of earth.

  • The start of the almost 50 year long legacy of traveling through space and time.

  • is this the first ever dr who?

  • @palmer3977 no, this is the first episode of the third ever serial

  • @neodarlek ok thx is the first ever episode on you tube?

  • @palmer3977 No, I don't think that this is the earliest episode on YouTube, search for "An Unearthly Child".

  • @neodarlek I saw The first version of "An Unearthly Child" where there is a differetn actor that played the police officer and Susan and the Doctor are dressed differenly than the broadcasted is on here but not the one that was acually broadcasted.

  • @britfrenir My apolgies, misspelling the word differenlty.

  • none of these videos are loading for me

  • I found a copy of the late 80's novelization of this story in my attic over the weekend. It had the McCoy years logo above the title is about 120 pages. Didn't even know I had it! O_O

Pretty good story, I must say!

  • Best show ever made.... internationally :)

  • Is this episode 301? or 1?

  • Tom Baker is my favourite doctor of all time.

  • I had been a fan of the show since 1979, when Tom Baker had the role of the doctor.

At the time I had always thought he was the first Doctor. It was when I saw The five Doctors that I discovered more actors played the great doctor. To day I now own 100 vids and 20 dvd of the classic series. but I am still missing some This is one of the stories. Thank you for posting these classic episodes for those who had never saw the show from day one. BBC Worldwide TV ROCKS in my book!!

  • @dadogster I first saw the show in 1975 with Jon Pertwee and thought he was the first Doctor and I missed when Jon Pertwee change into Tom Baker.

  • Classic Dr Who!

  • I've never seen Doctor Who. I've always wanted to get into it, but there's so much of it, I never knew where to start. I guess this is as good a place as any.

  • @Armagedn12 Most people will tell you that the best way to do it is to start with series 1 of the revival, and watch old stories at your leisure. Honestly, it's the longest-running and most massive sci-fi franchise in history, you're not expected to watch/read/listen to everything.

  • hang on grandfather? that means David Tenant not only has a new daughter (in the new series), but another daughter too :-P so where is she? And what's happened to Susan? (who looks like my ex) :-P

ps. the Tardis doors are better in this one.

pps. love the milk and water machine.

  • @earthacademy Susan is dead obvioussly killed along with all the Doctor's family and all other time lords/ladys when gallifrey was destroyed.

I also would like to see more of the tardis like you did these early episodes would also like to see the milk machine back and whats with that odd little table there for no reason it looks so out of place i love all that stuff.

  • The Doctor left his grandaughter on earth to settle down and have a normal life about a year before he regenerated into the second doctor, after dangerous battle

  • Actually, she married a human and stayed behind with him after the dalek invasion of earth.

That's the last we ever heard of her.

It's not entirely clear if she was actually human or a time lord.

  • @Khayd4126 In the Eighth Doctor audio "An Earthly Child", Susan and her son appear. Susan says outright several times that she's Gallifreyan, the son is half-human, and that he has two hearts.

  • @AliveStorm93 I've not seen that, but I'd like to.

Probably would have been more correct for me to have said, 'that's the last I've seen of her'.

I really hope they bring her back at some point. The loneliness aspect in the show is really getting old, with as much as they've been using it.

  • @Khayd4126 I'd be pretty cool to see an older/regenerated version of Susan.

  • @fdragon010 I agree completely. would make one hell of a storyline!

  • @tribetng We don't know that Susan's dead - she might still be with her boyfriend on Earth after the Dalek invasion.

  • The Doctor left his grandaughter on earth to settle down and have a normal life about a year before he regenerated into the second doctor, after dangerous battle

  • @earthacademy Check out bigfinish (dot) com for audio dramas. There is one called "An Earthly Child" starring Paul McGann and Carole Ann Ford as Susan Foreman. Good stuff.

  • @earthacademy David Tennant mantiond in the last series that he has had children and a family, but the were all killed in the time war.

  • @earthacademy As I recall, she decides to live in an alternate universe. No clue what happened to her during the time war, but it seems The Doctor assumes she didn't make it.

  • @earthacademy susan found someone she loved on earth so the doctor sent her there

  • @earthacademy

He said many times in the series that he 'has been a father and a grandfather'

  • @earthacademy

Both died in the Time War.

OR Susan's still on Earth in the future, and never joined the war.

Depends which stories you believe :P We never find out for sure

  • @earthacademy Susan Foreman was left behide in a world that was saved from the Dalek in 2164. Also Depening if you do by the CD. Susan got married and had a family with David Campbell.

  • @earthacademy It's never been established if Susan was the doctors granddaughter or if she called him grandfather as a way of preventing the unfortuante conataions of a much older man traviling with a young girl

  • @coramcstrap Shes from 49th Century Earth so I am assuming its a nickname she gave Doc Who like young girls caling their pimp their "daddies".

  • @coramcstrap It's sort of assumed that she is his grandaughter, Tennant has mentioned he's been a father before in 'The Doctor's Daughter'.

  • @earthacademy chances are they probably didn't survive the time war.. espeacially if they were related to the doctor could of made them targets

  • er....ads at the beginning, sure....ads in the middle? ummmm....

  • nice to see the bbc finally using adverts. they wont be hunting me for their bbc tax anymore i take it.

  • I was afraid for a minute there after Ian said he felt dizzy that he was going to put his head in the seat of the chair and stand on it!

  • it is a question

  • Its supposed to be cheesy

  • My father met William Hartnell in a pub in the 60s, he said he had just been offered the role in something called Dr Who but he didnt think it would be very popular!

  • I love that story!

  • @ybot1983 if I got offered a role in anything on tv I'd take it even if i think its going to turn out rubish it still should open acting doors and hopefuly my heros!

  • @ybot1983 Haha that's great

  • i do not understand why he is called doctor who

  • @porkandbeans1991 He's called 'The Doctor', it's the T.V. show that is called 'Doctor Who'.

  • thank you, i understand now :-)

  • because he keeps on changing his appearance, i think its explained in the first 2-3 episodes :)

  • @simonedday You've got to put this in context. I'm @ 5:05 right now, and it's pretty good. I've watched enough Hartnell stories to know that nobody is acting like they usually do. Ian + Barbera seem to have lost their memory of the TARDIS...

Don't judge the actors based on this story. you need to see them in "ordinary" circumstances, which they're clearly not here.

  • the lack of cgi?

  • @lozzabella90

Nope its definitly not that... its just that ive seen kids perform school plays better!

  • I don't think you understand the story: the actors are supposed to come across as dazed, confused and spaced out here. Watch an Unearthly Child or the Daleks if you want to see their 'ordinary' performances.

  • The acting from guest performers and bit part players is better in the new series I think, but the regular actors were much better in the 'old days'! Carole Ann Ford aside maybe, can you see Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate outperforming these regulars? Not likely!

In any case the characters are supposed to be unnaturalistic and awkward in this opening episode, before we learn what mysterious calamity has befallen the TARDIS.

  • what is all that Granddad stuff about? Maybe they could make sense of it now he has a daughter?

  • @darthstemcell simple. Susan is the Doctor's granddaughter. what dont you get about that?

  • lol but for me this is crap.....

  • @TheExpasion Yes because it's in black and white and you're probably 12.

  • Maybe with your instant coffee and and instant microwave meals, you want instant Doctor Who which jettisons atmosphere in favour of transient populist thrills for the CGI generation.

  • @androzani7 --- I couldn't put it into words until now.

"....instant Doctor Who which jettisons atmosphere in favour of transient populist thrills..." YES! That's it, that's what I want!

  • Na gimme David Tennant anytime lol

  • Ha ha! What a crash at the beginning!

My favourite bit was when cherie blair pranged out and threw her watch across the room!

    Love the old Doctor Whos.

  • i know susan REALLY pisses me off

the microphones they had in those days were not good enough for her to keep screaming for no reason without warning and has she never felt pain before in her life? the way she reacts to it and the fainting was life really? REALLY? of course when one faints they don't just collapse, they do a pirouette into a cartwheel and carefully lie on the floor

  • erm... I think Ian and Barbera say "fainted" for want of a better word. What happened to Susan is clearly a direct result of her trying to touch the console.

  • Mmm... The Doc really *has* come from a dark past huh? This episode reminds me a lot of 'Midnight', series 4 of New Dr.

This is enlightening for those of us who have been introduced to the wonderful series by RTD, thank you BBCWorldwideTV =)

  • Mmm... The Doc really *has* come from a dark past huh? This is enlightening for those of us who have been introduced to the wonderful series by RTD, thank you BBCWorldwideTV =)

  • Don't the first six mins remind a little of 'Midnight'?: "There's something in here..."

  • i promise i will never complain about william shatners overacting after watching these women. lol LOVE these classic episodes!!!

  • Great classic Episode! Ron Grainers original theme and Score!

Made the whole show a cult in my opinion just like the Prisoner with that opening title score sets the whole show to be awesome.

  • @king2102b Original theme - with the Timelords' heartbeat!!

  • Of course, thank you! The new series' of Dr Who have been good but not a patch on the originals in my opinion.

  • It is a good film but dose not load on my computer well.

  • I love how this is backdated, 1964.

  • actually amazing xD

  • See, the most pressing thing for me about this story is not who is responsible for tampering with the TARDIS, but what exactly Barbara was thinking when she put those awful trousers on that morning.

  • She "borrowed" those trousers from the Thuls in the previous episodes b/c she ruined her own...and I think they look awesome. I wanna know where I can buy a pair!!!

  • Oh yeah! I remember now. But seriously, they are not good troursers... unless you are a size 8 or something.

  • Its Thals, not thuls ;)

  • It was the 60s guys...and the budget only allowed for limited rehearsals..

  • and you can't even rewind it!

  • i hate this new real tv shite. the videos show themselves as being completely loaded as soon as you start them so you never know when it actually is fully loaded.

  • i heard and read that some of the older episodes were lost in a fire is that true and if wo wihich ones? i dont like to be surprised by the next episode in a series this well writen to not be available.and ild waste hours searching.

  • @nsramir82 .

They weren't lost in a fire, the BBC destroyed them.

In the early seventies in their infinite 'wisdom', the BBC decided to start wiping a lot of old black & white television programs. One of the reasons was that they believed as colour television broadcasting was becoming more and more popular they thought that b&w wouldn't sell abroad.

Doctor Who wasn't the only program to suffer this. A lot of television drama, comedy & documentaries were wiped.

  • Many of the classic stories lost include:

    The Tenth Planet episode 4

Power of the Daleks (all episodes)

Evil of the Daleks (3 episodes)

    The Moonbase (2 Episodes)

The Wheel in Space (all episodes)

The ones above are all either Dalek or cybermen stories, but many more were lost.

As a result, we only have 6 complete adventures with the 2nd doctor :(

  • This is so creepy!

  • At the begging where they fell over was terrible acting.

  • ...are you sure the bad acting stopped after they fell over?

  • Haha pmsl

  • Does any1 know why this vid & a few others are available in the US & others are geoblocked? And it cna't be due to some of them being out on DVD over here bc the Krotons is not out on DVD anywhere & it's available in the US. Where's the Worldwide in BBC WORLDWIDE???

  • its called a dicktease lol

  • u should put the first one ever on!! and the second episode eva 2 wen the darleks apear for the first time!!

  • I have those episodes on DVD and they're awesome.

  • Great great early Dr Who ,I grow up with the Dr Who

  • You have to remember most of these actors came stright from the English stage, so the 'natural' style of acting that you're familiar with today wasn't a common thing. Also these people were going were other actors hadn't been before, they probably hadn't a clue what they were supposed to do - it's all part of the fun!

  • dude doctor who is the first science fiction program that came out for tv and this is one of the first episodes ever! so i dont think theyll just get rid of it and the actual tape is saved on is probably worth loads

  • actually they did, the BBC used to recycle old film to record shows over older ones back in the 60s-70s and it was before home videos, that plus a believe a lot were destroyed in a fire i think. Point is I think about 70% of the orginal episodes were lost

  • It wasn't the first science fiction program. For example Quatermass first appeared 10 years earlier, and i'm sure there were things before that.

  • classic cool, more please!!

  • Its great that the BBC are showing classic Doctor who here.

  • this reminds me of midnight so much so i think rtd may hve had a bit of a copy as per usual

  • i agree

  • i grew up with dr who, they were so imaginative, scary and given the lack of electronics then, and imagination nowadays, they beat anything produced today. come on, lets face it, any good sci fi was written years ago, its reproduced again and again, let me see, war of the worlds, the time machine, dr who, i robot,

  • dude this old stuff rocks

  • kids today only find it boring because the sci-fi in those days is real now

  • Sure TV was only catching on in those days...

  • A great story which also gives us a more detailed look at the tardis. William Hartnell is as great as ever.

  • New Who can go to hell for all I care. *In Dalek Voice* CLASSICS RULE SUPREME!!!!!!

  • The stories are great, youve got to remember this is 50 years ago..try some of the newer episodes, Dr Who is the longest running Sci-fi show from the 1950`s to now!

  • I wish everyone would stop downmarking the comments of those who prefer new who. It makes you all look childish. Opinions arn't a crime the last time I checked. And no, I don't prefer new who, I find both series equal.

  • There's quite a bit of nerd rage in these comments.

  • I'm so anoyed that the BBC deleted so many episodes of the first two doctors, those are episodes you'll never get to see. I always hope copies will be found by private collectors or in other countries but it is unlikely.

  • Robert Mugabi has ALOT of old Doctor Tapes, no joke.

  • I have seen this story several times over the years and each time I see something new in it. This is good understated drama.

Too slow for a modern audience that needs `Hits' every 5 minutes.

In an age of costcutting at the BBC, short plays such as these, studio bound using minimal sets could actually prove to be a success.

    Abigails Party,Play for Today etc...

  • Look where that guy had his hands. No wonder that girl was brandishing a pair of scissors.

  • is this the first series?

  • yep

  • Yes, the third serial broadcast sometime in 1964.

  • @jacko653 - Well, to be honest, I think you should be a bit more grateful for Old Who. Because without Old Who, there wouldn't be any New Who, would there? No. So, when you next say "The new Doctor Who takes a dump on this Doctor Who!" I'd think a little more about it. If you're capable.

  • Yeh just saying. Don't have a cow. You talk like your some old dude!

  • @jacko653 - Well that's maybe because I read a book every once and a while. (And "You Are" is "You're")

  • Look I read plenty of books! Some past my age group. Like Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. Also I don't really give two flying shits about my spelling.

  • @jacko635 - *Yawn*

  • Yeh I know but I have to read them. Anyway what is your problem? All I did was make a comment about the old Doctor Who. Big deal. I didn't break the law or anything like that! So I think you just like picking on people for no reason.

  • jacko653 - I disagreed with your view. I told you so. What else is there to it? And what else did you expect on YouTube?

  • It dosnt matter how far off your age group you read! In a sevey as we call them in utah, and i read feyond a college level. It dosnt matter!

  • i dont care what books you've read you are an annoying twit.

  • So you admit you are one?

  • omg is this the very very first episode of dr who?

  • No, the first ever episode is called "An Unearthly Child"

  • I'm an old skool Dr Who fan, but actually prefer the Tennent version. My nephew has been shown the old ones but says they are too slow and 'gay'.

TV moves at a much faster pace these days and aren't padded out with the cheaper text option rather than the more expensive action based.

  • PROPER Doctor Who!!

  • An episode dedicated to bickering. perfect.

  • As much as I like Hartnell's episodes, I have to agree. They should have picked the first Daleks episode. That was a fun one.

  • Real DR WHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Seriously, the new stuff is overwrought. The whole save the world theme gets old quick. Sorry, but I like Hartnell much better.

  • classic doctor who is just great

  • The 1st Doctor opening titles are still creepy as fuck.

And OMG! classic Doctor Who legitamatly on YouTube! Hopefully this'll give the young whippersnappers a taste of what Doctor Who *really* is, and stop all this "omg david tennatn is teh bestest evar" rubbish.

  • how do u upload a show?

  • You mean watch?

Just hit the show it will start if not there has been issues with some of these shows.

Uploading is when you want to put your own video.

If you want to do that then just hit up load and find the file you want to post.

    Hope this helps

  • I think it is great love it.its good to watch the classics.

  • Not sure why I got a poor comment???

You would be PO if you could only watch 1/2 the stuff they put on.

  • Daily Motion has a lot of old episodes up, though the video quality isn't great. But at least they're complete episodes.

  • Heeey now, I'm a UK license payer I shouldn't see adverts for BBC programming.

  • Season Four - 1966

    The Smugglers

    The Tenth Planet

  • Season Three - 1965-66 Galaxy 4 Mission to the Unknown The Myth Makers The Daleks' Master Plan The Massacre The Ar
