The more I hear about this mine collapse news, I begin to think standards should have been in place ahead of time. Since there is a place they all reached after the collapse in the mine, there should have been communication emergency lines in place plus stocks of food, water, showers, & at most an emergency escape shaft already in place to escape from!

Better safe than sorry for such a deep gold mine. Also we never hear about the mine owners & their sentiments!

Takes time to get them out not because of lack of technology, Chile developed top notch mining technology particularly in open pit engineering. Is actually a physics problem. Big and fast drilling can cause tremors, and we all know what could be the consequences. Gravity can claim them all.

Technology is not so much a problem. Chile is a top mining nation. We have the biggest Underground Mine and open pit copper mine in the world owned by CODELCO. The men in charge are among the best in the world and know what they are doing. They have the 'know how' to get them out. Where we need more help is in treating people in isolated conditions for so long. There is no precedent for this...only NASA has experience with this and that is why Chile requested assistance in this area.

@Timvisgood we don't have the technology, but we can rent it..as i answered @Flerg3, the machine they are using is called Strata 950, from southafrica, it will dig a tunnel 26 inches wide, and it will drill between 50 and 65 feet per day, so the estimate time to finish will be between 3 to 4 month..then extract one miner at a time, each miner will spend about 30 minutes to an hour being pulled up thru the little tunnel..i just hope they can get them out before x-mas... take care
