In my town (Massillon Ohio) according to the little scrapbook the FD put together, they 1st used these on the rescue squad here sometime in 1962 when they purchased a new Chevy Metro van for the squad (called the "disaster unit" since it's inception in the late 40's, & some of the police still to this day refer to the squad as the "DU.")
@CTFD13 Yes they are, at most if not all stations. I know station 1 (main) & station 4 (south side) do for sure, as 4 makes a lot of runs up my street.
Nicely done on this demo of an early Federal siren amp. The current e-Q2B, a 100Wx2 DSP model, uses similar modes and adds both siren-brake and air-horn modes. Now, if only they'd develop a pedestal speaker with a bi-polar rear section to give the e-Q2B a dispersion pattern consistent with the old C-Siren, whose size the BP-200EF approaches....
sounds like the federal q .funny thing is now that sound is just starting to make a come back most of the new electronic sirens have this sound.very popular now.cool.
Which company manufactured the "penitrator" electronic siren. That would be from the 60's. Does any one remember the Motorola electronic sirens that sounded like a duck when used in the manual position?
Would you be willing to take internal pictures? I got a copy of the manual, but it leaves a few details out. I'm trying to figure out the specs of one of the transformers in it.
This is the first version of the 'Director' model. It was in production around 1961-1962, so it's very rare. And yes, this unit sounds very much like a mechanical siren.
The final version of the Director is the PA15A series 1E (introduced in the early 1970s), and the 1E sounds more like a synthesizer than a siren. As Federal electronic sirens underwent many internal design changes over the years, they sounded more and more like synthesizers than sirens.
After listening to this siren again, The yelp sounds just like the eQ2b yelp. Horrible. Maybe Federal just copied their old technology when putting together the eQ2b???
Fantastic sound!! We have an electronic siren in our 1962 Ford cab over caled a Fyr Fyter. It actually has a more unique growl and longer wind down. I guess they were trying to mimic electromechanical sirens at first when they started to change to (lower amp draw) electronic sirens.
I wonder how an electronic siren can make a wind-down sound such as the PA5. I'm also astonished by the quasi-mechanical sound of the wail and the electronic yelp. This is an intersting model.
You know what this reminds me of is the spanish sirens like the fire truck vids from Chile and those places. It kinda sounds like them if you listen carefully in the Bomberos vids.
were do you get it
