Did Steve Martin and Paul Shaffer miss the recording day of this video? They're not in any of the group shots and the video is edited to look like they're playing with the rest of the band, but they're quite clearly playing on their own.
Does it appear to everyone else that Paul Schaffer and Steve Martin are not even there (with the group)--that their bits were recorded somewhere else??
@surfdude2000 - You've got a half-empty glass there, buddy. The hallmark of a truly great song is that everyone wants to play it, so it gets handed down for generations!
Who ever don't like this can suck one choke and die. I love this so damn much. Also while I am at it seeing as how its in the list of videos to the right of the screen I feel it's my right to say FUCK!!! Deliverance that ain't the true South that's just some backwoods shit hole in cali. Cali folk don't want to admit but they are raciest scum just look at rodney king, watts and all the other shit related to there raciest hate. They don't want to take blame so they blame the south, Fuck cali...
My only complaint about this is how Leon isn't showcased when he plays. Each of these musicians gets some camera time at their solo, but he doesn't. Aside from that, this is fun to listen to and to watch.
I want to get this put on an alarm clock. WAKE UP EVERYBODY! I'm new to appreciating the banjo. In my crazed youth I was ignorant and did NOT understand the beauty of the banjo. I now understand - there is NO unhappiness in the sound of the Banjo. ONLY JOY - as this clip reveals. Than you very much Mr. Charlie Jazz! My pulse is now nearing 200!
@tubularniggaz - may I introduce you to the one and only Leon Russell? But I must agree - he now is looking a bit like father -time. Believe it or not tube, back in the day - Leon was HOT! All the girls wanted to sit next to him on the piano stool!!!
You can tell by the expressions on their faces that this wonderful group of musicians are having a blast. How could anyone hear this song and not have a smile on their face?
Steve Martin is one of those famous people out there who just really deserves to be well known. He is an actor, a director, a screen writer, and talented banjo player, gotta hand it to him.
BTW, thanks for the upload, great, great song. Notice everyone is having a great time playing and really enjoying themselves, you just dont see that anymore.
When I hear this I see myself hauling ass at 150 mph in my 66 Pontiac Beaumont, a bottle of Black Velvet in one hand and a big joint of hash in the other and just fucking tooling down the road with the local OPP on my ass...just like it happened in 1978. They didn't catch me that night but it was not long before they got hold of me. YYYEeeeeHHAAWWW!
@frmertd Paul Schaffer..he's great friends with Steve Martin and Earl scruggs, but he seriously is not needed with his piano version even though he's a good musician. He looks like he needs a large dose of immodium because he acts like he's trying to avoid a seriously heavy launch of liquid shit in 100 directions.
Acutally the 1st part of the video is OK but the sync goes wrong for some reason-as for the criticisms-Paul Shaeffer was ASKED by Earl as I recall if he would record this with the group....he has done some Nashville stuff in the past.
Grawfiddler- the guys are credited above so why are you saying Glen Duncan is Harry Stinson.
too the ppl below me thats how it was recorded, i know because about 5 years ago i saw this, it inspired me too learn banjo now i play every instrument in this video im an accomplished banjo player and i teach lessons. it made me smile that i found this video :)
you would think paul shaffer was the star of the show with all his ridiculous movements. he's got some balls even touching a piano in the same room as leon russell.
@charliejazz Thats how they do all music videos like that, because theres no way to mic the instruments effectively in a setting like that and get the sound quality they have. and when most bluegrass musicians play a song, they dont play the same notes every time.
@flatpikinguitar I would like to acquire a copy of the original (uncommercialized) video and audio recording of this session along with private use license. Is there an option for me to get it?
@flatpikinguitar Rofl, you're out of your mind. By your statement, it's obvious that you aren't familiar with any of these musicians, and haven't heard any of their performances in the past. The person who changed the format of this clip and put it on youtube may have screwed up on the audio/video sync, but that was definitely a real performance.
@rebsrule311 Thats how they do all music videos like that, because theres no way to mic the instruments effectively in a setting like that and get the sound quality they have. and when most bluegrass musicians play a song, they dont play the same notes every time.
@flatpikinguitar Earl Scruggs can play like this in his sleep. And so can Steve Martin. Yes, this is an original song posted over a video of the guys, but it is exactly how they do it on stage so what's the diff? People love to see a video with an original soundtrack so they throw these together in a few minutes. But every one of those fellows are "in sync", but I agree, not with the video.
@flatpikinguitar I agree. There's no way this video was from a single take. A wide-angle close-up one moment and then a long-shot, no camera in sight. Very artificial. Compare the live recording example posted by Nekrophyliac
lol earl is cool lol iv seen him havent meat him but i know jd crow lol hsahahaha i have guitar from im hahahahaha i whent to the jd crow fest this year but i know allot of bluegrass musicain's kentucky blue i know them to ...........................

@rawfiddler I think that's Harry Stinson on drums. Longtime session guy, played on Steve Earle's "Guitar Town", was the house drummer on "American Music Shop" and is currently seen all over YouTube as the drummer in Marty Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives.
He and Duncan do favor each other (similar features and hair), but I'd wager a steak 'n' tater it's Harry Stinson.
YouTube compression doesn't always synch up especially when the notes per second exceed the frame rate of the video after it's been compressed three times LOL.
If this had been a slow waltz you never would have noticed anything amiss!
It always looks like Paul Schaeffer is choking his chicken under the piano.
