Presumably by producing sparks in rapid succession at the frequency of the note you want to play.

The primary coil in these types of coil are driven at around about 40kHz which is far above the audible spectrum. By re-modulating the input of the drive circuit they can within the confines of 40khz reproduce any frequency they want at quite a large volume. Though 20Hz i dare say would not sound so appealing. These Tesla coils are bloody loud.

@awesomelightning Baraboo, WI (I don't believe it's a public event, so I would be hesitant of giving any more information than that... however, they did attempt to do this event in town one year but the turnout wasn't so good... perhaps they will try again one year)
