Unveiling a $200,000 per ticket roller coaster ride in the recession is insensitive. It is sad to see rich people rationalizing their selfishness as if a roller coaster ride to the edge of outer space were an act of promoting humanity's progress in space exploration. Rich people like coming up with excuses for why their selfish expenditures are benefit the rest of humanity. Children need dental care before we pat the rich on the back for spending $200,000 per ticket on a roller coaster ride.
People are ends in themselves, not the means to someone else's end.
In most instances, to be rich means that individual provided (through his thinking and hard work) something of great value to his fellow man. Thus, that individual has already done something to benefit humanity.
Unless it's a politician, a clergyman, a swindler or a thief, I'm overjoyed to see that there are people who can afford to spend money in this way.
You do realize you're talking about a high altitude roller coaster ride? A lot of times the rich tease the poor with vicarious infatuation so that the poor are taught to applaud the extravagances of the rich as if they were somehow leading to better progress for us all. But all we end up with is a dumb roller coaster. Anyone who pays $200,000 for this ride should wear a bag over their heads that reads: SELFISH.
And at what point can they, or any of us, take the selfish bag off our heads? Can we do it if we turn in our Lexus to drive a Honda, or must we downsize to a bicycle? Maybe the bicyclist is being selfish since surely he can walk? And maybe we all should eat nothing but boiled beans, since to dare and eat a steak would be selfish?
Life is short. Dare to live it if you're able, for you'll never get the chance again.
Are you telling me you can't draw the line between a $50 steak dinner and taking a $200,000 roller coaster ride during the recession, while American children need basic dental care, and have to go to school with burning tooth pain in their mouths? SELFISH!
If it were really just a roller coaster ride, the rich would not be spending their money on it. They did not get there by throwing away their funds needlessly. And anyone can become at least comfortable if they live a bit under their means and use their money to make money from an early age. Very few can become rich through salary alone.
It goes up, then it goes down. It is a roller coaster. The rich have you fooled into thinking their selfish objectives will benefit humanity in a grandiose way because you want to live vicariously through their extravagances. Many of the rich have made their money off of people's gullibility, like Americans who pay an extra $50 ($2.50/gal.) for a 20 gal. fill-up, and then wonder why they're in a recession with a big hole in their pockets.
Congratulations to the hard-working crew at Scaled Composites. Thank you to Burt Rutan and Richard Branson for their vision and leadership. Thanks to the X Prize Foundation for providing the catalyst for technical endeavors.
