two tips for the next time you build your quinhzee put only one airhole atleast the sie of a quarter at the top of the quinhzee hot air rises but cold air will not drop down dont make it too big or youll lose the warm air second tip once your inside cover the entrance halfway up with snow so your feet will be warmer :) note you want to have 2 air veltalation holes so you have air flow
Great job, our family got a bobcat and made a massive Quinzhee. We dug it out and it is perfect to sleep in cause' me made it the right way...yah...lol
It's DanM25456 again. This weekend, I'm planning on sleeping in my quinzhee that I built last weekend. I have the floor slanted up, and 3 big airholes (The shelter about as big as yours). The thing that I'm worried about is if my sleeping bag will get moldy and wet ( I roll around a LOT in my sleep). The floor is all snow, and slanted up( so co2 sinks out). Any advide on keeping my sleeping bag dry?
As long as you dry your sleeping bag out after, you should have no problems. ou can leave it unzipped and open in a well ventilated area of your house/apartment. You can put it in the dryer on tumble. No heat. If the sleeping bag is down, add a tennis ball to break up any clumps that might form.
Depending upon how cold it is, you shouldn't melt the snow around you. If it's really cold outside and the snow melts, it could mean that your sleeping bag isn't warm enough and is letting heat escape.
Thanks. My dad was convinced that the water will damage it, but I also think that less snow will stick to it if I add an icy galze to the inside of my quinzhee but putting a lit candle in for an hour. I'm pretty exicted, and I'm in a blizzard right now! Once I have time, I'll make a video of my quinzhee, but thanks for the tips. I'll tell you how it goes.
DanM25456 is right. The entrance should be lower than the floor of the quinzee so it will act as a baffle for the cold and wind coming into the quinzee.
Great idea. Unfortunately, that wouldn't have worked with the quinzhee that I built, as it was too small. I'm going to try again this winter, and I'll make the bed level higher than the entrance.
I'm probably gonna try that too, maybe not sleeping in it. I live in the chicago suburbs, so we dont get more than 6 inches of snow at a time.I'll collect my snow from my driveway. So, obviously, my quinzhee will be smaller than yours. I wish I was in winnipeg. In boy scouts, I might go with my troop next winter to northern wisconsin just to sleep in quinzhees.

@MrGeorgezel so you want to remove the insulating property of the snow by making it icy?

Put brush/leaves/twigs/pine branches under your sleeping bag to insulate you further from the cold ground.

I think you're supposed to elevate where your bed is to have a dip to trap cold air

@kinthelt Another good idea is too have the roof as smooth as possible, it will prevent dripping. not like it drips much anyways but just a thought.

Wasn't that claustrophobia-inducing at all?
jamesblackburnlynch 3 years ago
It probably would be. Fortunately I'm not susceptible to claustrophobia. I learned later that my quinzhee was a bit smaller than most. :)
