looks like a lot of bands had a hard time pulling it off live.// wasn't all their fault the sounds and mixing live somebody didn't know either how to pull it off.
only time i saw these guys was Diver Down tour in October of 1982. ;) it was loud!! was really late when i got home. i overslept the next morning and was late for work!! but, i had fun!!
listened to this one for an hour the first time i heard it...happy, celebratory genius piece.yep most underrated...i agree....i know big van halen fans that do not recall this one...
Typical Van Halen...all business in the studio and all fun on the road. Who wants to go to a show and hear a song exactly as it was released? I love the variation when they're live.
The greatest show money could buy in the late 70's early 80's man...this shit was magical...there were no videos even magazines werent covering these guys early on but their name and music spread like wildfire and being a guitar player my buddy brought this cassette out at a keg party and said you gotta hear this their called Van Halen and then like any epic moment in history Eruption played It was right up there with walking on the moon you'll never forget where you were when you first heard it
Mr Roth better thank his lucky stars that he met the Van Halen boys. He is TERRIBLE. I have to agree with many comments on here. Terrible version of a great song. As a long time VH fan, I was lucky enough to see them right after they put out 1984. Was at Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum (Nice Arena that Katrina blew away!) It was Jan 26, 1985, Eddies 30th birthday, all the wives were there, they played 4 short sets. UNBELIEVABLE SHOW and did they ever PARTY!! Think it was snowing in there!
never look for rock n roll live that isnt sloppy...that is what its all about my friends...studio is studio..live well this is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@woodros yeah lol the US Festival took place in late late 83 in Cali (or one of them anyway) which is when this was shot. this was from Heavy Metal Sunday. whats funny is i asked my dad if he remembered when this happened and i called it the U.S. festival as in the united states lmao he corrected me and told me that it was "US" as in the word us haha
Wow, this version is absolutely terrible! For the amount of money people had to pay for their tickets, I would have demanded a mother-freaking refund. I could get up there and a much better job than he's doing in the video. Damn, it's a joke to say the least!
Unimpressive. Roth is only decent (not great, decent) in the studio. I saw them many times before the Hargar years, and it was the same everytime. Roth drunk, can't sing, forgets half the lyrics and jumps around like we paid to see a gymnastic demo. The other three jammed their asses off. Once they got rid of DLR, then they were a complete band. Watch the clip of performing Jump with a folk group. It is almost unwatchable. Van Halen needs new blood, and not Wolfie!
Yes they were that bad. They were way late, drunk, and it took forever to get a complete song out of them. Roth was screaming and threatening the sounds guys during some acoustic thing he was trying to do. They were really shown up by the Scorpians who came on before them. We were walking out to the car before they were done with their set. (we were STILL trying to get out of the parking lot at dawn.) Looking back, I wish we had stayed for Monday too. (And, that I had brought a camera.)
@Ruggerthecub The music was spot on. David Lee Roth ruined the music by being too drunk to remember the songs. If someone gets paid that much money to entertain, they should leave the drinking to the fans! At least until the encore....

Eddie said they did not have a lot of time to put down new tracks becuase they were just comming off the Fair Warning tour. They had been wanting these covers for a while nad it just all fit.
While their tour was huge, Fair Warning didn't do well commercially and the band was pressured into a quick follow up by Warner Bros., they wanted singles. The covers were suggested by A&R with Ted Templeman and DLR pushing. While he has said he didn't like the album, Edward's playing was brilliant.
Eddie is using a little guitar

Diver Down may have "Oh,Pretty Woman"
and "Dancin In The Street", but, "Little Guitars" is the best track on the album. I don't know why the album was filled with cover versions.
