i drove a 96 2500 5spd that had the 6.5 and we straight piped it, it had 225k and was straight piped too. your couldnt hear the turbo at all, but that thing blew more black smoke than my friend's cummins of the same year, and also out pulled him bumper to bumber, he had strraight pipe and an intake, i just had straight pipe
im a hardcore ford guy but i think it is the coolest fuckin thing how they would put these 6.5L in 1500s. that is so badass i would totally drive this thing with a huge fuckin smile on my face. prolly get pretty good mpgs with er too right?
@SOUTHWESTMXRIDER well if you get a great deal then go ahead but you are going to have to work on it soon after buying these engines can overheat easily and they do not like heat at all. Check for blowby it will have lots but somtimes if its a ton there might be a lot of fuel geting by the rings. you can do lots of test also ask the guys (and gals) at diesel towing resource .com
4 inch makes a world of difference. That sounds like a TRUCK!!! mine is a modified stock 2.75 not quite 3 inch straight pipe (posted vid) and doesnt sound that mean. Only when i first cut the downpipe at the soot trap did it whistle like that., but Efin loud til i hooked pipes back up.
Unless you start them. Great engines for cracked blocks, broken pistons, thrown rods and blown headgaskets. Not to mention the dumb PMD problems, a rotary pump, not having an intercooler and being IDI. Other than that....they're "great".
@KB3MMX Every engine has design flaws, look at powerstrokes, the 6.0 had so many problems Diesel Power (Atleast I think it was cant remember which magazine) made a huge article about the issues and solutions, the 6.5l for the most part was a workhorse and thats how the designed it
Yes they have 1/2 ton 6.5 and 6.2 diesels in those trucks and they have light duty 3/4 tons that are 6 lug instead of 8 and have 1 less leaf of springs, my dad owns a light duty 6 lug 3/4 ton just like this it has 130k on it, and i about bought a 1/2 ton 6.5 about a year ago but they was askin to much. Chevy also as you all know have the heavy duty 3/4 ton an 1 ton 8 lug. they are a good engine regaurdless of what people say, but a cummins is the best diesel engine in my opinion, just more money
i worked on a 97 6.5 it has 760,000 yes seven hundred and sixty thousand on it and it runes great and doesnt burn a drop of oil! baby it and it will last that long
i just bought a 1999 gmc 2500 6.5 turbo diesel and i want to straight pipe like your truck. But i was wondering if straight piping it will cause any kind of damage to my enigine or anything else?
Absolutely not. The better a turbo diesel can breathe in and exhale the better they run. An open air intake and exhaust are the two easiest and most effective ways you can wake your truck up without diggin deep into your pockets. If you do end up straightpipin' it make sure you post a vid!
my dad has a 96 6.5 in a 1/2 ton ext. cab 4x4 and we straight piped it from the 2.5 inch pip to a 3inch straight pipe and it runs and barks so loud and nice we have bigger injectors in it too and sounds nice...like he said the less back presser on a turbo the more boost you can get and better it runs
yeah its totally fine to straight pipe it, BUT you do have a newer truck and it IS obd2 unlike rdryder 's and mine so you might have problems when you go to inspect it passing emissions but as far as being bad for your truck,,, it is better for your truck (better mileage, power, and egt's)
she snarls pretty nice man think the most she may need is possibly a piston ring job? keeps oil from cylinders better .. but who am i to say anything i dont know crap lol
i see ok well it does have some miles so i guess its normal to have a lil blue smoke, remember changing the oil on time is the key to get your motor close to 500.000 miles.
I remember when the GM diesel hit the market in the early 80's you could get it in a half ton. I did not realize that they offered the 6.5 in a half ton, unless that is a 3/4 ton with six lugs?
i didn't know they had a six lug three quarter ton.....you wanna tell me more about that cause i didn't know they made a half ton diesel up untill three months ago. Nice truck though you got the turbo sounding real nice.
Unfortunately i have yet to be able to afford to open up my intake so thats all stock still. As far as the piping, its just a cat and muffler delete w/stock tubing. The tailpipe is only bout 2.5". I am planning on 3" downpipe and crossover as well as 5" stacks eventually.
Hey I have a 94 chevy with the 6.5 and 6 lug running gear also, does making it straight pipe make the computer go crazy or is that not enough back pressure?
I havent had any problems with it. I actually seems to run a little smoother now that it can breathe a little easier. The factory exhaust is so restricted that even straightpiping it would never give it too little backpressure or throw a MIL code.
the least amount of backpressure post turbo the better. the turbo provides all the backpressure the engine needs. there no sensors in the exhuat of a 6.5 so it won't mess up the computer. chekc out my 6.5 with a 4 inch stack. that sucker really whistles. nice truck btw.
Yeah...what "iamdave" said. There is no such thing as too little backpressure on a 4-stroke diesel. Open up the intake as much as possible and open the exhaust as much as possible, and maybe add a little more fuel. Thats the very basic level of diesel performance... especially on non-computer cont. ones.
sounds like a construction site vehicle

Good point.
I'd put the 6.oh Powerstroke and the 6.5 IDI chevy in similar categories. Both has numerous flaws but are still fun to drive.

True, that they are

i believe the six lug 3/4 ton were classified as a 'light duty' 3/4 ton

correct. the 6 lug 3/4 ton was the 2500LD the 8 lug 3/4 ton was the 2500HD.
