What would be a good alternative to a Technics 1200MK2? I want to buy a turntable, don't know a whole lot about turntables, and dont want to break the bank. I was thinking like an alternative workhorse turntable to the 1200, pretty well known but not very expensive and it doesnt need a lot of extras, just the basics.
@theredreceivers Hi, I would consult with Kevin of KAB USA. He knows the 1200 very well. or look for used audio shops in your area and see what they offer. A local shop, audio studio, in Brookline MA was how I got back into vinyl inexpensively. then you can save on used but have the back up of a solid analog repair person.
@es0puka Actually I don't think Technics was completely shutting down the SL-1200 line. From what I heard the more higher trims like MK3 MK4...etc might get the ax but as far as the industry standard mk2 is concerned it still has a chance, but to anyone looking for a pair new! GOOD LUCK just for 1 mk2 its nearly $800!!!
I had a pair of 1200s like this. One of them had a faulty on and off switch so I left it on and running none stop for over 10 yrs. (tell you the truth had to have been about 15). I was a Billboard Reporter back in the day and that turntable never stopped spinning. I loaned it to a friend and never saw it again.
Those old Technics turntables are very infamous for the switches failing on them. I have an old 1970's Technics turntable myself, and such a thing happened to me. The way I fixed it was by fiddling with the switch. It's over 30 years old, and it outlived one stereo receiver. Those things are really built to last. It's as useful now as it was prior to CDs and I love the thing to death.

everyone thinks those SL-1200s are the cat's ass, but all I see is an overrated generic '80s japanese turntable.
My Sanyo TP-1010 is just as good as this thing. the only difference is mine is belt instead of direct, servo instead of quartz, and looks more plain. Still built just as well though.
Sanyo is not known for their turntables, but a lot of their turntables are quite good.
Just because I said the Technics SL-1200 is overrated. Well it sounds like you're insecure. You probably bought a beaten up used SL-1200 for $1,000.00 because some audiophile message board told you they were great.
But you refuse to question what you've been brainwashed to believe.
So I will continue to run my Sanyo and my BSR, because i personally think they're great turntables.
I dont give a fuck about some snobby audiophile or his opinions.
I had/still have the SL-1301. Has the suspeneded arm and platter sub-chasis. The original 1200 was a nice machine...they don't make em' like that anymore.
those Technics's are a dime a dozen. they still make them today. Just watch out when you buy a used one. make sure it wasn't used for DJ-ing, because this model is popular with DJs.

I remember the first time I got my 1200MK2s was back in 1991...and at that time, the turntables were only $299 each.
Shocking how the price got to be at $799, today.

I heard these 'might' be getting discontinued. End of an era if it's the truth. They'll end up collectors items.

Actually, if I can get a SL-1200 for a low price in great condition, I would take it! Any other deal: shit.

ok, right
deejaying is not bad for a dd turntable. Only if you don't know how to treat a turntable.
bad sl's are the ones that suffered, from moist, dust, bad mods with the inside of it, and most of all: bangs against the tonearm assembly.
This risk is only high when used at parties, discotheques, or by deejays who have zero interest in turntables.
Thereby most problems occure due to a turntable just getting older. I have bad experience with the pitch control being in non-use for a long time.
