  • reniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ♥

  • awesome band - but no doubting ian's voice sounds crap live....

  • A great comeback. John squire, Ian Brown, the Stones Roses inspire my life whenever i listen to their songs for the past 20 yrs. One of the best Indie Manchester Band ever produced and still it will be forever. Forever "Stone Roses"

    Aszri aka Wak

    Country : Singapore

  • EPIC band, I want to be 10 years older.....

  • doy mi alma por estar en blackpool!!!

  • omg how fucking awesome are they?awesome days,screw today's shite,what a perfect total they are,perfect guitars,perfect bass,ian's creative and emblematic,and what can we say about reni?pure genious

  • john squire is the best in the band

  • @CaliBoy644 the best in the band, in my opinion, is Reni one of the greatest drummers in the history of pop music. They could be one of the best bands, what a pity they separated.

  • ian brown is god

  • Legendz!!!!

  • oos from blackpoo anyboooody

seriously, what is that noise he makes at the end of the song?seems he could sing alright back then (sometimes) but barely speak

  • I've just realised that you could take a still pic from just about any part of this performance and it would sell millions as a poster. The word "iconic" doesn't even cover it. The band that made it possible for so many others ...

  • I know all bout that but I'm just wondering was it a traditional thing to throw lemons at Roses gigs!

  • The lemon thing...seems like he picks one up before he says it...did people throw lemons on stage? Kinda makes sense with the album cover.

  • The lemons counter tear gas effects on the eyes. The song Bye Bye Badman is about 1968 Riots, were some man told the band about how they used lemons.

  • Reni is God. Ian Brown is either monged at this point or he can't be fucked, cos he sounds pretty terrible

  • "Who's from Blackpool Anybody?"

"Booooo! Manchester la la la Manchester la la la"

    Fuckin class!

  • alan wren is the best drummer of the last 20 years!

  • ....Reni is considered by many to be the best drummer of his generation, and the "single most important drummer in UK indie circles" and according to former Hacienda General Manager Howard Jones, he "played the drums like Hendrix played the guitar."...

  • he's like a modern keith moon.

  • that's crazy wah wah

  • It's a shame Reni and John aren't involved in music these days, such talented musicians.

  • it was their choice , no one asked them to leave , & with reni walking just before the 2nd coming tour , john gave very little warning he was gonna split , just a phonecall. shame ,.....

  • fuckin tops!!!gives me goosebumps mannnnn...

  • i used to play the drums and thought i was pretty good but now i know i was pretty basic at best bloody hell renis a genius

  • oh ya..sum legend dat man brown...

  • wot does he say at the start ny1???

  • "Suck a lemon, you're eyes don't water CS gas it's true." - The whole artwork and many songs (Bye Bye Badman) from the eponymous debut are based around the students riots in Paris 1968. I'm from Manchester and I struggled to get what he said initially.

Reni on fucking fire in this clip; What a fucking amazing drummer!

  • @Waterfall64 i could have sworn he says "suck on a lemon, eyes don't water from CS gas, its chillin"

  • Oh yeah, sorry, the point being the students were sucking on lemons during the riot as police pelted CS gas canisters at them. It stopped their eyes from watering!

  • John Squire is absolutely fucking fabulous.

  • Amazing guitar effects! Real masterpiece of music/lyric wise "The Stone Roses = Sensational" Really hard not to cry that there not together anymore!

  • " artic sheets and field of wheat"....!

  • masterclass in drumming

  • Comment removed

  • Renis drumming is actually sensational in this.

  • Squire Shredding Away As Usual

    Cant Beat It

Wish They Would Reform For A Crazy Stadium Tour

  • Ladies and gentlemen ...Mr Alan John Wren. Drumming up a fuckin' storm.

  • every great band has a defining gig, for the who it was leeds, oasis it was knebworth, and the stone roses this!

my band, the schoole talent show! lol

  • ha ha lol mine too. thinkin' bout covering elephant stone.

  • i want to cover loads of stone roses, but lack of bass tabs, and a drummer that doesnt like em a huge lot lol

  • yeah. i can't find bass tabs for half their songs, been trying to figure elephant stone by the guitar chords and by ear.

  • if you figure it outcould you send me it? or is that a bit much to ask?

  • yeah, if i figure it out i'll try and tab it and throw it up on bassmasta.

  • it would mean a lot even a rougth tab would do something i could work of

  • chords for elephant stone are C, D and G. then for the break, its D. You need a capo on the first fret though...

  • GOD this should be the best gig ever

  • I think it would either be amazing, or rubbish, like Spike Island

  • There used to be time when ppl could make MUSIC and put a special atmosphere around it with their charisma. Thank you.

  • I bought this on 12" vinyl in 89 and i've still got it - i was one switched on 11 year old!!

  • fucking epic. sounds better than any studio version of this song

  • utterly brilliant! timeless!!!!

  • it,s effin superb reni the unsung hero

  • 20 years ago today

  • i've wathced this thousands of times and had a cd of it in the car but never listened on headphones for some reason?? holy shit its amazing, i would highly recommend it

  • I simply cannot resist Reni's energic drumming. Nor can I resist Squire's funky wah-wah! :D

  • the best thing they could do is play one last tour, a was very younge and didnt apreciate them then but now a love them, better than oasis, bring back the stone roses

  • Amen.

  • GreenGoblin is a twat who goes onto all these videos and says the same things..Just ignore him/her

  • GreenGobllin!!! how the fuck can ian brown nick liams style ya daft cunt..ian had his own remember mate ian has in the scene since the early 80's..this song was in 1989 and liam started his own in the broadwalk in 1992 so get ya head checked

  • GreenTwattyGobllin, this was performed before Liam ended kindergarden. Cheers

  • Silly. The Stone Roses came first! You'd be smart to buy the albums and see how amazing they really are...

  • stone roses were before oasis, and liam gallagher copied him you fucking dumbshit

  • yeah, a mean if there was no stone roses there would be no oasis, totaly agree with u

  • I really really really love the intro...can't get better than the stone roses!!

  • me too lol, when i 1st heard this i had to get myself a wah peddle just so i could play this intro on guitar haha mine sounds no were nr as good though, also the bit at 3.39 sound fking arwsome

  • 18 title we are on the piss lol

  • wow! thnx for sharing this .

  • The best rock music comes from England, this band prove it!

  • Probably true.

  • what a drummer think mondays at gmex as better

  • It's bizarre. The Wah Wah pedal was pretty much popularised by Hendrix in the 60's. It lost credibility when disco and funk abused it through the 70's.

Then in the late 1980's Squire pretty much made it sound like the coolest, funkiest, sound in the world.

  • True mate, Squire made it sound like it was a brand new sound, to a lot of people it was. I think he outgrew the Roses - Second Coming was Squire's album - I dont think the others were as into bluesy rock and guitar solos as he was!

  • ian keeps a-groovin

  • John Squire is a guitar god!

Does anyone know what kind of gear/settings/effects did he use on the Roses era???

  • Best Roses intro ever. F*ckin classic. Under some Pedals its listed as Wah or Hendrix mate

  • i think he uses a phaser effect

  • >>> google is your friend!!! :-)

  • This is on a 1964 Gretsch Country Gent guitar, through 2x Fender twin reverb 'silver face' amps -1975 -ish., slaved to a MesaBoogieMkIII (used as pre-amp). The ffects unit is an Alesis QuadraVerb GT and his pedals are an Ibanez Tube Screamer, a Dallas-Arbitter Fuzz Face, an Ibanez Stereo Chorus and a Jen Wah-Wah.

  • Thanks mate I really enojy his killer tone. He influenced the way I play the guitar but I'm not that good!

  • Quality band. Reni is awesome on drums too.

  • haha this is before liam lol. Liam is Ian Brown.

  • it was the other way around as liam has freely admitted in past interviews this concert was twenty years ago what was liam about 14 years old............

  • He was 17 so he was old enough to come to the gig and calculate ian browns awsomeness and swagger.

  • I've got a mixing desk bootleg of this gig on tape somewhere, and it sounds even better! I cant undestand why they cut Sally and Standing Here off the video, especially Sally Cinnamon - it is just massif!! I'll try and dig it out and upload it...

  • hiya if you find it do you think you could also upload standing here, always wanted to hear that at blackpool,

    Thanking you my friend.

  • It does not really matter if Ian Brown cant sing. I have his singing style aswell.

  • i love this band

  • john squire is a legend , he wrote most of the tunes on his own and he wrote all the bass lines.

  • wish i was hearing this for the first time again...shit hot !

  • Their finest hour..Ian,Squire,Mani and Reni all on top form

  • jonny squire is on fuckin fire!

  • The Stone Roses are back togheter!!!!!!!!! yeh!.

    Let's have a Madchester Revival!!!

  • Ian's terrible at singing but i love it :D

  • I agree, it's weird how the best band ever have the worst front man, but it fits somehow. Awesome band, awesome song.

  • Far from the worst front man mate. Not a good singer but a great front man.

  • that would have been pure magic being there on that night

  • RENI LIVES

  • john squire guitar bliss

  • I love the Roses but god damn Ian sounds terrible.

  • now on the album elephant stone drum intoro is amazin ... but that wow fukin quality squire . ian brown .. smooth

  • i was there un-fuckin real, now i wear a collar and tie and am surrounded by twats 9 hours a day! but i will rise again i swear..

  • Amen to that brother, me too!

  • maybe there are people in your office who love the roses but think you're a twat in a collar and tie too?!

  • lol rise again hutchoman

  • great band shit singer even in 89

  • im only 17 and i love the roses best band ever gutted that i never saw em play but i saw ian brown thet wer class, i listen to them all the time they need to reform they wud make millons

  • there so random the stone roses,

    but so cool,

talking about lemons and CS Gas lol, maybe all the weed they smoked lol x

  • Nah it's from a fella Ian and John met on the late sixties n seventies French riots

  • it's from bye bye badman, which is about the 1968 paris riots (imagine singing it to a policeman), and the artwork for that song is the cover of the Roses' first album...the lemons are indeed a reference to what the students did in 1968, to limit the effects of teargas......go and listen to bye bye bad man, imagine you're singing it to a policeman, and you'll see what I mean! "Choke me, smoke the air/In this citrus-sucking sunshine, I don't care, you're not all there"....

  • a want a sunhat..

  • I still want to be Reni when I grow up!

  • I am Reni, in my head.

  • im mani haha

  • how funky is that guitar!

  • ive watched these blackpool live videos soooo soo many times. the stone roses are before my time cos i was born in '91 but they are byyy farrr the best band ive ever listened too. the only one i never get bored of! i want to see she bangs the drums from this but i dont think its on youtube. thanks for uploading this.

  • One of my personal greatest memories was hearing this version for the first time. What a Rush.

  • The Lemons is a reference to some Student Riots in France.

  • what does he say at the start

  • lemons if you suck em, you dont get your your eyes watered from CS gas, its true.

front cover of the roses album theres a lemon.

duno what its supposed to mean like

  • reference to paris riots in 68 when students sucked on them to prevent effects of tear gas. The artwork is from bye bye badman, which itself is about the riots....

  • Legends

  • i agree.why oasats ? or no way sis?or i owe sis.or whatever the fuck there name is were never done for robbing the roses' image ill never know.forget the hype about beatles or bob dylan or bowie.the roses created as much magig as any of them, maybe in a shorter period of time but eh,tell your kids.

  • shut up u prick

  • who?

  • yeah ano but its the way he pronounces the sentence and that

  • "Suck em u dont get your eyes water CS gas, its true" doesnt make any sense what so ever but its class

  • It's about lemons.

  • Reference to the lemons of the front of the LP. During the riots in Paris people used lemons to reverse the effects of CS gas being sprayed on them..

  • dumbass

  • you dumb ass.

  • why do you think lemons were on the cover of the first album? knob

  • the lemons were used by 68ers in Paris to counteract the effects of CS gas : "you suck em and you dont get your eyes watered with CS gas"

  • Why are you telling me this?

  • reni drums his arse off on this song. love it.

  • Reni absolut brill

  • does any one know what John is plaing in the intro and what cords he is using?

  • Just open G, D, C with a capo on your first fret and plenty of wah wah pedal of course!! Hope this was helpfull mate. J

  • ?? Are you serious ??

  • Fooking fantastic guitar work in the intro, Brown's vocal is garbage and the band carry him in this version of the song. still fantastic though!

  • Ian's voice is as flat as a pancake. John screws up a a few times. Should be a terrible experience.

But it's not ,it's ace! Why?! Cause They have so much soul it's just oozing out. It's wobbly and spirited and better than most anything else ever made. Besides they are obviously high as hell!

  • Quality!!!!

  • best band ever, his singin is atrocious in this tho haha

  • thats the group of my youth.....i cant believe that live performence...he cant sing they cant play except the drummer awful sry

  • "they can't play except the drummer" - so you don't think Squre is in any way a talented guitarist? Interesting!!!!! Just LISTEN to his playing on this, or many other tracks....the boy can play you idiot

  • greatest band ever

  • chooon!+ reni is fuckin awesome, name any drummer in the world and reni pisses all over him- easily

  • leftfield!..........quality!

  • nothing means anything, anymore.

  • true great band... each member soo talented! i reckon if it wernt for these guys we wudnt have such great music to listen to now! no1 will beet reni on drums mani on bass squire and I.B! oasis are great but even liam says "ian brown is the king of rock n roll" this band is truly fkn great!...oh and those tht say ian brown cannot sing... go and see him live. take it easy x

  • ye man

  • Man, at 3:21 Mani owns those drums.. lookit him go. There will never be another!

  • Think that's Reni but that's OK we know what you mean!

  • You mean Reni?? Mani is the bass guitar player. Both very talented anyway! Best band ever!! Nuff Said :D

  • mani dont play the drums....reni does

  • right! Sorry about misidentifying the band...my bad. Thx for the correction.

  • well.... maybe except the live singing from Ian brown, that wasnt so gud, but stil a great band

  • My Favourite song from the roses, what a great band, aint heard any band better since them.

  • The best since the beatles...I challenge anybody to name one band even close to challenging the Roses since that great long summer of 89?.

  • I sort of agree with you, although I think Radiohead are at least close to them.

  • your very very very very very rong

  • No.

Anyway I forgot Led Zeppelin anyway, they where after The Beatles and better than The Stone Roses. The Second Coming is very Zeppelin-esque, actually.

  • they were after the beatles but neither led zeppelin or the beatles nor radiohead are as goods as the stone roses.

  • Lmfao. Think that if you wish.

  • John had been listening to lots of Led Zeppelin during the five year hiatus they had between albums. They're my favourite band, wrong direction, though... very few standout tracks on The Second Coming. I listen to it just for Reni's drumming! His work on Daybreak is remarkable!

  • That's "you're" and "wrong". A basic lesson there for a basic person.

  • yeah you couldnt be more wrong. also led zeppelin nowhere near the roses.

  • i like stone roses but led zeppelin is much more famus outside the UK. I think stone roses is better but when im talking about stone roses with my friends no1 have heard them but like every1 have heard Led zeppelin.

  • there's a difference between good and famous.

The Roses were the BEST British band ever, but they weren't the bigest.

I know which one I'd rather be though

  • your comprehension of music is none
