I trained my bichon to use a litter pan. She is super-smart and loves people. Undoubtedly the best dog I have ever have. LOVES to do tricks. See her video, "Belle the bichon does tricks for cheese" if you want to know how smart this breed is!
I have one and my life has been miserable. She is the worse dog the worse breed you can ever EVER own. I worked and still do with animals never have I seen a terrible little dog like this. My neighbor's little girl can't pet her. She has her mouth open all the time bitting. Horrible nightmare I can't give her away someone might hurt her so I will love and keep her but she is terrible.
@diane189444 I'm sorry you are experiencing this, but I'm certain that a good trainer/animal behavior person could help this dog overcome her difficulties. There is no reason both you and the little soul should be in pain, but she can't go find help. You must do it for both of you. Good luck.
@diane189444 - behavior problems like this are due to OWNER ERROR and are not the fault of the dog and absolutely not a characteristic of the breed. I've never had an issue like this with any of my bichons, they are the sweetest, friendliest, most loving dogs in the world. Don't blame your little puffball for not being properly trained - that's not her fault.
@Jaguirre93 Usually not. There is almost always some kind of fee to cover basic expenses of rescue, please vet bills etc.If you find someone directly it could be free and some shelters ask only for a donation.
my bischon poo potty trained to go out side in only 3 months... he was born in july 2008 we got him in September 2008 and he was fully trained by xmas 2008
@mylittlekia bichons are really smart dogs. i breed bichons. we bred a bichon to a poodle and we called them poochons. i think its a little easier to say. i love bichons and will always have them
They are cute but notoriously difficult to housetrain. I worked with mine for 18 months and he still wouldn't go outside. Never barked, whined or gave me any indication he needed to use the bathroom. In fact he would be right next to me and start peeing all over. I eventually had to give him away. He was pretty easy to train in all other areas though! They are also very loving, but it's usually on their terms. They are very cat-like. My cat was easier to housetrain though.
Though I've heard that Bichons can be hard to housetrain, I had an easy time with mine. He was four months old when I got him, and he was housetrained in a week. He did regress for a couple weeks after being neutered, but I read that's normal. So I guess it depends on the Bichon. To see my Bichon, click on my username. Good luck and thank you to this poster on his Bichon rescue efforts--they deserve a good home.
Our Bichon was super easy to housetrain, piece of cake. It's a very smart dog and great with kids. My wife runs a daycare and our dog is with small children all week long.
i feel ya Tom, I have a bichon too and i hate when people say hes a poodle or think hes a poodle, there is defenitly a clear distinction between a poodle and a bichon. I love my non poodle! hehe
I have recently rescued a 6 year old Bichon Frise and he is wonderful
