This is all great but there is no way that one can get to any kind of Therapy in this country on NHS. Why even put teasers like this out here. GP´s are just worried about money and are too keen to prescribe drugs and that is it. A lot of good ideas come out of this country but it is not properly rolled out.
Yes it's true cbt does not work long term but that's not measured by researchers/ iapt. And why would thought control work anyway... Surely only a real lasting therapeutic relationship can change brain chemistry. Shock horror, stop the press!!
@leapsplashafrog I'm afraid you are mistaken. You should consult the evidence base before making comments like this, or refrain from commenting. It's a serious issue, because people's wellbeing is at stake.
I'm a psych major and am using this for a presentation on Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Thanks for the information. This is great for my presentation. Also, CBT has helped me immensly with my struggle with panic disorder. However, its not a cure. Once you get away from working on these tools, the negativity can come back, and then you have to work on it again (which is what I need to do now)
@leapsplashafrog Sometimes people need a bit of help. I'm recieving CBT therapy for severe anxiety and OCD and it certainly helps somewhat, and i'm only in the early stages of the therapy. Each to their own though. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. CBT is a proven method though of helping people with emotional behavioural disorders etc.
@mehmetursan CBT is used for OCD cases. OCD is anxiety based and I believe CBT is quite effective. As others have said it challenges thought processes. CBT is interesting in that it trains the client / patient in a system so that they have a set of skills that they can use all through their lives. You'd be surprised how empowering that can be.
Cancel orPost or Create a video response So CBT states that 'our thoughts' create our emotions and not 'things'.
Does that not suggest that a rape victim suffering from trauma is the agent of her own suffering? That it is not the fault of the rapist that she feels bad, but it is her own fault for having 'negative' thoughts?
@BillyFeynman CBT works on the basis that it is not the event that causes the emotions, but our thoughts about, and perceptions of, that event. Obviously rape is an event that should create such emotions and no one is saying otherwise. But cognitions are often not realistic, such as in the case of phobias and social anxiety.
@BillyFeynman no, this says that a survivor can help to feel more empowered and in control in her life and over her emotions. It helps reduce her suffering by giving her techniques to combat her fear and insecurity.
I have major depression and regular high levels of anxiety. I am starting CBT soon, I honestly can't wait, things at home are hectic. I've been on Fluoxetine for 7 or so months and I am yet to receive the benefits I desire. CBT may be the way forward.
Im into philosophy so i can say that therapy will help a percentage of people while it might be a waste of time to others. psychology is a 'science' that covers disorders or chemical imbalances, it has no physics which means psychology will help you deal with problems in a better way than the way they were dealt before. since there is no physics then psychology cannot be a reliable source for solving free will.
CBT helped me to recover from drug-induced grandiose delusions. After several years of recovering through the miracle of healing I had CBT for other issues. CBT gave me a new concept that I could be wrong in my perceptions - in this case, I could be ill and that was why I saw things so wrongly. It helped me to see the denial, although I had escaped so much of it, there was some way to go, to let go of my egocentric view. (late developer) Thanks to CBT I can laugh at my delusions. Thank you CBT.
i respect cbt. but i would not want to be treated by this man. he doesnt seem like someone who really cares. i am sure he means well. and i respect him for that. but I think we need more people in this industry that dont just work from a textbook. Me and my mates hardly ever get picked up by professionals before we do something stupid and its because they cant see the signs....it would be great if we got people who understood people rather than see them as a disorder or chemical imbalance.
CBT has helped me a great deal by teaching me to monitor my thoughts. I've found that when I'm feeling overly anxious or sad it's due to negative thinking. I use to be unaware of this connection between thoughts and feelings, but now that I'm aware of it I can calm myself more readily. Identifying the culprit responsible for my misery wins half the battle in working my way out of it.
@richardsoobhak of course we all have anxiety and its not an illness, but when people have irrationally high levels of anxiety then it is, or at least it needs some sort of treatment like an illness
CBT seems to be a relatively quick fix for problem thinking that allows some people to better cope with life. What if the act of "thinking" itself is the problem and all the effort we put into improving "thinking" is just the problem trying to fix the problem? Perhaps coping with life is only a small glimpse of what life has for us and that "thinking" stands in the way of fully living life.
@richardsoobhak "If I was a patient and I was suffering from one of the common mental health problems such as depression 'or' one of the 'anxiety disorders' my GP might suggest that I could benefit from a course of psychological therapy particularly cognitive behavioural therapy" Listen better next time he says 'or'
One component of my anxiety challenge is that I feel as if every action I make where people are/may be present, needs to have a qualifier to it; kind of like I feel as if I'm living out my life for other people. One thing I did that helped once, was driving the speed limit without going over it. I found that people expected that I would go 10km/hr over it and I forced myself to keep to the speed limit regardless. Then I realized after a while, that there was nothing they could do to harm me.
i believe CBT is the best way to challenge your learned unhelpful thinking & behaviors. with a lot of practice , one can change their life from chaos to mindful ,happy living. i have been taught we are all worth it & we have the right to live a life that is meaningful to us.
From my own experience, if you are seeking psychatric help and your offered CBT, only have it carried out in a hospital. I'm saying this because if you are at home external factors (such as a radio) can disrupt the therory behind the purpose of CBT. Please read my other comments about CBT.
I'm on a mission to change the way that all CBT is perscribed to human beings in the future!!!
Don't have CBT it will change your life. I became alot worse off from having this method of therapy done to me. I'm owed alot of money in compensation
cbt is crap and unrealistic as no matter what the scenario the therapy is always geared to see the positive in any situation.for example if i get cancer and im told i got 5 years to live cbt would say it could been worse u could have 3 years to live,if i lose 1 leg hey u could have lost 2 its not so bad ,the 2nd world war killed millions of people hey its not that ad it could have killed billions, its a whole permutation about ur granny would say look on the bright side and given a name cbt by nh
Exactly what CBT are you writing about? You don't seem to understand it at all. Everything is not rainbows and pink bunnies in CBT. And being upset, pissed, angry are all OK. It's about inappropriate, irrational anger and depression. You don't seem to understand it.
@MetalMike1184 you only blush because u feel nervous and fear that you are ABOUT to blush because u had a split second feeling of shame/embarrassment/guilt ..and boom u blush... Imagine if you feel so at ease with yourself that you dont ever feel that hot feeling again in your face due to that u just feel relaxed and no feelings of anxiety in social situations. THATS how u get over facial blushing :)
CBT is now becoming more available on the NHS in the UK. For the first time ever, I can now gain access to CBT. Go and see your GP again if you have asked before, but were advised it wasn't available. It might be now.
Taking people off their antidepressants to save money is cruel. If the NHS were told to stop giving insulin because they had found one or two studies that proved diabetes could be cured with CBT I am sure they would jump at it. All this CBT stuff is because of the economic crisis this country is in, and the number of unemployed people who suffer from depression and anxiety disorders is too many. Look at the "Depression report" by Layard. Good evidence based meds work best for stressed brains.
@gorgeouseh your comparison of anti depressants with insulin is a bad one. insulin is given to people who have biological physical problems and is genetically inherent and if med was not given the sufferer would die. depression is universal and is brought about simply by fear of various things. all anti depressants do is shut off the thought patterns and once you come off them the problem remains. to me its a little like alcohol, a temporary solution. cbt makes you face your fear and eliminates.
In NZ you can apply to get extra funding for CBT or counselling or 10 sessions whether you are working or not which is very useful. Though it is very disheartening how expensive these weekly sessions are, especially when not only the rich suffer.
how would NHS treat a patient whose financial condition is not so good, but is in real mental pain????
are the treatments only for rich people, or some arrangements can be made to take care of poor people too???
There r lot of people around who are really mentally shattered but r not getting treatment at proper time n at proper exchange... and thus they live with that for lifelong... thats sad...
You guys who are calling scam on this are off the mark.
Our thoughts and beliefs are what make up our reality, and if you can help change the thoughts or beliefs of the negative/faulty thought processes we have, you can change your life.
I'm about to go into CBT to try to cure my OCD, Depression and depersonalisation and derealisation.
I'm really, really scared. OCD dominates my life, I have OCD that I developed and learned behaviours because my mother has extreme OCD which I grew up around.
All I know is that CBT saved my life and changed me from a very very debilitated and ill person into someone who can function and be successful once more. If you are out there and in pain believe me you can be well again and what you are experiencing right now is just temporary. life will be rich and refreshed for you, you just need to hang on. CBT worked for me. Maybe it could work for you?
@7732147 Yeah ive only just heard of this. Ive read alot about NLP(Neuro-Linguistic-Programming) thats really good stuff. Is CBT anything like that? Im very intrigued to look into CBT
@criticalbill1983 No because it takes 5-20 sessions... Like really... Most NLP fixes a similar problem in 20mins or less... Thats why its called brief therapy and thats why mainstream psychology attacks it because it works and if it was used more often would put people out of jobs...
@7732147 glad to hear that, im in college and going through SAD and it's really bad. I'm good looking but have no social skills, I have two friends, both of which are very shy, and i want to be more outgoing, meet people, go to parties, and it's depressing to think I'm a sophomore in college and I can't meet people or live the way I want to live. I live alone in an apartment, I hope to get over this on my own soon, but I'm glad someone else has.
Short term means it makes permanent changes over a very short term treatement period. You will not need other therapies afterwards. CBT has the evidence to prove it works, unlike almost all other forms of psychotherapy.
CBT has proven to be effecting SHORT TERM but long term it is not, by itself, the answer. Its a bit like putting pressure on a bleeding artery. It works in the short term, but other means need to be used to effect long term results.
you're wrong. CBT could work even better than medication in the long term, depending on the disorder of course. modern medication is more like put pressure on a bleeding artery, since it's just palliative and the disorder often kicks back when you are off the drugs.
I agree, essentially medication is symptomatic relief. Eg. SSRIs increase the level of the monoamine neurotransmitter serotonin (low levels are associated with depression, high levels can exacerbate mania); this treats the symptoms of depression (low mood, early morning waking etc) but not the underlying causes (such as faulty thinking). CBT aims to treat the underlying cause of depression or whatever mood disorder it is, thus removing the symptoms by removing the cause!
yeah it is true..one therapy doesn't suit every individual..some therapies use mixed therapies like the Corey who uses, psychoanalysis, humanistic and CBT approaches for therapy..in any other way, the patient has the freedom to select their therapist and counselor..just remember the therapist is more likely aligned to their subjective perspective.
CBT is a long drawn out process another buzz word like another type diet which has come on to the "market". They are selling it by having professors and other health professionals who want to publish inadequate papers on therapy which does little to help the client. Best to consider quick and effective approaches such as hypnotherapy and NLP appraoches.
its far less drawn out than any other talk therapies, where have you gotten that idea?.Its the most evidence based therapy in existance,Hypnotherapy and nlp have no scientific backing at all.they are for quacks and idiots who believe in them.
there is a wide range of evidence for hypnotherapy--in fact many of the concepts used in hypnotherapy were later borrowed by CBT-if you like i can send you links to the resurch
CBT has been shown time and time again by independent research to be effective for all kinds of mental health issues. Do you have any evidence hypnotherapy or NLP are effective? In particular, NLP is simply pseudoscience.
Funny to read all the comments about CBT in the British system. Here in the States, we have such a different system, so I don't associate it with a government program. (We've got over 40 million people without any insurance, and I'm on the verge of being one of them, so I wish I had an NHS to even complain about.) I have heard very good things about CBT, especially for depression, and am reading up on it.
Interestng that since CBT has been authorised by the Government as the ONLY useful therapy, CBT therapists have started to charge more and more money. Other therapists and counsellors have been providing an excellent service for years - at half the price.
Well to say that it should be "proven" (I disagree that this term is ever applicable in science) by using a brain scan would be to assume that there is clear biological pathology with depression which there isn't. We know that lower levels of some of the monoamine neurotransmitters are implicated but apart from that the picture is fuzzy. But why do you care anyway? If it helps people then why criticise?
Thankfully in the UK we have healthcare for all, not just the rich. But looking at other therapists, especially Psychoanalytic therapists, I am unsure that your assertation that they charge less is correct, especially if judged by the effectiveness of the therapy used.
Ya, I know what you mean. I wish healthcare wasn't so damn expensive here. I wanted to call a psychiatrist today to set up some kind of meeting for my SAD disorder, but after I learned that it was going to cost over $200.00 for the first session and around $70.00 for each session after that, I said screw it, I'll just go and try to conquer this disorder on my own giving my best effort to the best of my ability. Even though I have tried doing this all my life... I guess I can't give up.
Having trained both as a counsellor and CBT therapist it is recognised by most professionals in the world of psychology that all theoretical approaches have their merit. The advantage that CBT has is that its outcomes are measurable, with this I mean that we can accurately measure by how much people get better, unfortunately other forms of counselling or therapy are, at this point in time, only really able to provide anecdotal evidence of patients getting better.
ok ... CBT is very good because it doesnt involve the use of drugs and equips you with the tools to think your way around your own mental shit. Its not for everyone, but works very well on most people including clinically depressed so seems how it has absolutely no side effects whatsoever dont rule it out. Stop thinking everything has a Tony Blair tag on it somewhere.. Thats just paranoia
State sponsored because it can help people recover from many emotional problems and regain their lives. The state has nothing to do with designing the CBT therapy program. Scary - you obviously have no knowledge of CBT.
I took this for anxiety. It completely changed the way I thought about the anxiety. At first if I felt anxious, I would panic. After therapy, whenever I felt anxious, I could just deal with it. Wonderful, I fully recommend it.
its not cheap at all and has proven effect. The person alters their beliefs, thoughts and behavioural reactions ,the therapist doesnt do it.This change may also be neurophysiological and observed on mri scans.
Yeah, interesting points made here. I must say though that your belief that aiding social cohesion may in some way reduce the prevelance of depression (and other psychopathologies) is flawed. Twin studies consistently show that many psychopathologies (inc depression) have a large genetic component. Granted it may require environmental stimuli to set them off, but looking purely at external stimuli is unlikely to eradicate depression.Ever read Thomas Szasz?
For many people CBT is only a temporary solution. psychodynamic psychotherapy goes deeper and deals with more than their behaviour. NHS prefers CBT because it appears to be cheaper, i.e. less sessions, but sadly this is only wishful thinking.
NHS prefers CBT because it is proven to work for a large percentage of people. Psychodynamic therapy is available in many NHS primary care trusts but is not widely used because their is very little evidence for its effectiveness.
This is all great but there is no way that one can get to any kind of Therapy in this country on NHS. Why even put teasers like this out here.

LifeBeyondSeminars 2 years ago
shouldn't it depend on the individual problem??
doitanywayz 2 years ago
totally agree, CBT is for weak minded people
Nes232 2 years ago
drug treatment is for strong minded people?
ppihan 2 years ago
@Nes232 couldn't be more wrong.
stiffupperlip4 1 year ago
you're wrong. CBT could work even better than medication in the long term, depending on the disorder of course. modern medication is more like put pressure on a bleeding artery, since it's just palliative and the disorder often kicks back when you are off the drugs.
ppihan 2 years ago

Best to consider quick and effective approaches such as hypnotherapy and NLP appraoches.
jamiebanjo 3 years ago
its far less drawn out than any other talk therapies, where have you gotten that idea?.Its the most evidence based therapy in existance,Hypnotherapy and nlp have no scientific backing at all.they are for quacks and idiots who believe in them.
billysue2 2 years ago 2
there is a wide range of evidence for hypnotherapy--in fact many of the concepts used in hypnotherapy were later borrowed by CBT-if you like i can send you links to the resurch

I'd appreciate the links for hypnotherapy thanks

CBT has been shown time and time again by independent research to be effective for all kinds of mental health issues. Do you have any evidence hypnotherapy or NLP are effective? In particular, NLP is simply pseudoscience.

Funny to read all the comments about CBT in the British system. Here in the States, we have such a different system, so I don't associate it with a government program. (We've got over 40 million people without any insurance, and I'm on the verge of being one of them, so I wish I had an NHS to even complain about.) I have heard very good things about CBT, especially for depression, and am reading up on it.
Tracymmo 3 years ago
Interestng that since CBT has been authorised by the Government as the ONLY useful therapy, CBT therapists have started to charge more and more money. Other therapists and counsellors have been providing an excellent service for years - at half the price.
lady4elise 3 years ago
Unfortunately other therapists have been unable to prove their therapies are as effective.
johnrobertcolliver 2 years ago
Try proving CBT is effective using a brain scan, and that it is more effective than placebo talking therapy.
TruthBeyond 2 years ago
Well to say that it should be "proven" (I disagree that this term is ever applicable in science) by using a brain scan would be to assume that there is clear biological pathology with depression which there isn't. We know that lower levels of some of the monoamine neurotransmitters are implicated but apart from that the picture is fuzzy. But why do you care anyway? If it helps people then why criticise?
dannynavyboy1985 1 year ago
Thankfully in the UK we have healthcare for all, not just the rich. But looking at other therapists, especially Psychoanalytic therapists, I am unsure that your assertation that they charge less is correct, especially if judged by the effectiveness of the therapy used.
dannynavyboy1985 1 year ago

Person Centered Therapy is also an excellent therapy. It shouldn't just be about cognitive behavioural therapy. One size does not fit everyone.
CBT can sometimes work against people who have long term and recurring endogenous depression. There needs to be some thinking outside the box.
CBT is excellent for many people but there has to be more than just one therapy technique.
telemetry9 3 years ago 2

State sponsored and state designed behaviour modification. Scary.
JustaSaddo 3 years ago
State sponsored because it can help people recover from many emotional problems and regain their lives. The state has nothing to do with designing the CBT therapy program. Scary - you obviously have no knowledge of CBT.

I took this for anxiety. It completely changed the way I thought about the anxiety. At first if I felt anxious, I would panic. After therapy, whenever I felt anxious, I could just deal with it. Wonderful, I fully recommend it.

CBT is cheap, ineffective and forced upon people who don't need it.
Money should be spend on helping children and young teens through social cohesion before mental illness creeps in.
'Theory' of altering peoples minds, is purely theory.
One can only alter one's behaviour if one gains benefits from this chance.
In todays selfish, consumerist, violent Society - a lost soul, is unable to accept medically enforced brain washing.
Care and attention to people's needs is better.
luminescentfeeling 3 years ago
its not cheap at all and has proven effect. The person alters their beliefs, thoughts and behavioural reactions ,the therapist doesnt do it.This change may also be neurophysiological and observed on mri scans.
billysue2 2 years ago
Rubbish - no one is forced to undergo CBT. You have obviously made no effort to read the studies showing how effective CBT is.
johnrobertcolliver 2 years ago
Yeah, interesting points made here. I must say though that your belief that aiding social cohesion may in some way reduce the prevelance of depression (and other psychopathologies) is flawed. Twin studies consistently show that many psychopathologies (inc depression) have a large genetic component. Granted it may require environmental stimuli to set them off, but looking purely at external stimuli is unlikely to eradicate depression.Ever read Thomas Szasz?
dannynavyboy1985 1 year ago
What exactly do you mean by "stimuli" ? You said environmental stimuli and external stimuli?
gearsofwar2318 1 year ago
An accurate, yet widely accessible description of CBT imo.
It is good of the NHS to provide informative media such as this to help ppl better understand treatments, GJ. :-)
ErgoPondera 3 years ago
For many people CBT is only a temporary solution. psychodynamic psychotherapy goes deeper and deals with more than their behaviour. NHS prefers CBT because it appears to be cheaper, i.e. less sessions, but sadly this is only wishful thinking.
xeasternxz 3 years ago 2
NHS prefers CBT because it is proven to work for a large percentage of people. Psychodynamic therapy is available in many NHS primary care trusts but is not widely used because their is very little evidence for its effectiveness.
