I saw Robert Smith use 3 steps (standing in front of the ball return) on the right lane in the championship match at the Super Hoinke many years ago and his normal approach on the left lane. I've seen guys walk around the ball return or stand in front of it, taking shortened steps - but three steps? That is hard to do!
WRW was not doing that to mess around. The U.S. Open pattern is the flattest pattern in bowling. After the lanes break down, the only option is to move as far left as possible, and that in turn gives you a little room. Although it is the U.S. Open and basically there is no room. Thats why you see all the top pros playing fourth, fifth and sometimes even sixth arrow.
