  • this video is from an inexperienced person trying to talk about what he thinks he knows but does not. pay no attention to this guy.

  • DSLR WILL OVERTAKE THE CAMCORDER!!!!!!

    DSLR MOVEMENT!!!!!!!!!

  • I have an EX1 and an EX1R, plus a Canon 5D Mk2.

In normal use, there's no way the image quality of the 5D Mk2 comes near the EX1s - provided the iris setting of the EX1 is no smaller than f4.5. With iris settings of f5.6 to f16 (using Canon EF lenses) the DSLR wins hands down.

  • is that shirt one of the designs on the timelord messaging cubes?

  • It would be nice to show us a comparison of the ex1 and the 7d to show the so called difference of sharper image quality that the dslr's have.

  • Nice camera it looks pricey I'm guessing a $6000 dollar Camera

  • @TheTorrie89 why yes it is.

  • just goes to show you can post anything on YT

  • Ever used the Red One camera?

  • ??? I have both the Sony EX1 and Canon 5D Mark II (DSLR). You say the image is better on DSLRs? That's simply not true. DSLRs will give you more depth of field, and are typically better in low light (although the EX1 is very good in low light), the image itself on the EX1 has much more resolution. Have you seen both compared on a large screen? DSLRs certainly don't have an image quality advantage over the EX1. I'd hate for people watching your video actually think that would be true.

  • @GabeandGarrett hey man. thanks for your comment. I've done some research (should have done more before making this video) and I've realized that this is correct. sorry about my comments. Although I believe DSLRs look better, I understand that the ex1 has better resolution

  • @EverythingFilm No problemo... aesthetically speaking, I would agree with you that DSLRs have a very pleasing image, primarily because of the DOF options. Not that the EX1 doesn't have a very pleasing image, but the EX1 tends to have a more ultra-real look. But it can be easily tweaked to taste. I seem to get a more 'organic' look straight from my 5D II.

  • @GabeandGarrett I use both DSLRs and EX1/EX3's quite frequently and much prefer the DSLRs image. The EX series cameras are nowhere near being good in low-light. Hell, they're noisy in the shadows at 0db in the daytime and the noise starts in the mid-tones... not really that great. The highlights also have terrible roll-off in comparison. The only thing they really have going for them is that the image is less artifacts and a bit more resolution...

  • @xmesher your calling me wrong completely out on context.

i didn't say that slumdog or blackswan were shot completely on a DSLR. I was just saying that they used a DSLR for portions.

and hell and back again beats that trailer any day

  • Thanks so much for answering my question.

  • Hi David,

Great video. I'm planning on getting a DSLR. In this video you mentioned extra items you need for the DSLR - rig, sound recording equipment. Could you please tell me what items you would recommend to go with a DSLR to make it look and sound like film e.g lenses, tripod, sound recording equipment. I would really appreciate it.

  • @arwenevenstar123 hey man. thanks for your question. In terms of audio equipment, your going to wanna get a Zoom H4N Audio Recorder. With this, also get the program PluralEyes which will sync video to audio.

For lenses, I highly recommend the 15-85 canon efs and the 50 1.8 canon

  • Hey David! I invite you to add your input to the thread I started in the DVXuser audio forum entitled "Is the EX1 Image Quality any better than the best DSLRs?" Here is your chance to prove your point. All I can say is that I feel the EX1 has a sharper, better, IQ, but I'm open to being wrong when your tests prove your assertions. Cheers!

  • @Chadfish thanks chad! I appreciate the comments. I'll definitely look into posting. Love your videos by the way, very informative. a lot of the time I watch them before choosing which equipment to buy.

  • @EverythingFilm Cool man! I like your vids (what I've seen so far) too, and have subbed. My disagreement with your point in no way colors my opinion of you. I can actually change my view if I see something to support that. I'm just a gear geek that loves everything about all this stuff man. Cheers!

  • how did you get the dvxuser link up there??

  • Sure is alot better than my little flip d:

  • @Renownify don't knock the flip....i love mine for my shooting of the unique and interesting people of nyc videos......perfect to whip out of my pocket at a moments notice and catch that crazy lady fighting on the train or the 300 lb. homeless guy shitting in-between two parked cars.

  • @EverythingFilm Maybe we're comparing apples to oranges. Cinematographers choose the EX1 for it's image quality, and deeper DOF (people use that!), as well as it's reasonable size. But they choose a 7D.5D for the very small size, and for a shallower DOF. Slap a Nano-Flash on these and you get an even more robust picture. I just think your statement was based on opinion more than fact, but I'm open to see the facts if there are any.

  • great rid

  • Really super camera,think it's very expensive....!

  • DSLR is by no means superior in terms of image quality to the EX1, for starters you don't have to think about what your shooting to avoid morie patterns and the EX1 is better with camera skew, if you can't get a good image on the EX1 it's because you haven't got your picture profiles set properly.

It's just a much smaller chip so you if shallow depth of field is what your after DSLR will achieve that much more then an EX1.

  • @rivercraig sorry man, gonna have to disagree. We use various picture profiles set my NYU cinematographers and the image quality doesn't come close. Plus, there is far more noise on the EX1, even when shooting with 0 gain.

  • @EverythingFilm Noise levels produced by the EX1 are more acceptable to me than morie, DSLRs produce nice images for their price point but the trade offs are too much for me to use them exclusively over an EX1, especially when you have the FS100 available.

On a side note, this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine but people keep saying EX1 is a prosumer camera, it's not prosumer, it's a professional camera Sony's prosumer cameras are listed with their consumer cameras and don't have XLR inputs.

  • @EverythingFilm Have you tried -3db gain?

  • GanEdenAustralia ands CamermanLink both have good reviews on this camera as well.

  • I love the EX1 image, it's just a different image IMO to DSLR.

  • And how much is it?

  • @HolySmokeNPipePadre The camera is $6300 at B&H

  • A more in depth review would have been nice and whats with your lighting.....or the lack of.

  • Beautiful camera.

  • Hi David,

Beachtek make the XLR inputs that mount underneath between the DSLR camera & the tripod. Also there are several other types around now that can help with this.

Costs between a fully kitted DSLR-Video rig(D5/D7) and the EX1/HMC40/XA100 are similar now, so I guess it's just a personal preference.

  • My Canon T2i has external mic input... with a shotgun mic I can record audio on that

  • Great review and comparison between DSLR's. I personally am looking forward towards the successor to the Sony NEX VG10. I am praying that they will put XLR ports on the thing.

  • well did you see the movie MONSTERS it was shot on that same cam you have in your hand

  • I wish i can major in film ):
