  • I think they should of had both the endings on seperate movies.

  • I liked the movie ending better - the whole world was threatened, not just New York.

I could see the countries banding together to fight a common threat.

  • They should definitely have kept the squid ending in the film. It's just so weird, shocking, disturbing and memorable... a giant psychic squid cloned from a human brain, teleported to Manhattan to kill millions. And it's actually explained in a detailed way in the comic. There's a lot of foreshadowing too. Bizarre, yes, but it does make sense. And to think the entire squid scheme could be explained in about one or two minutes of dialogue from Ozymandias... it's a pity Zack Snyder felt otherwise.

  • I'm rather glad that we didn't have to see that giant squid with the anus for the mouth and vagina for an eye....it worked for the book. But the ending with manhattan also worked. Both are equally good in my eyes. The Story and depth of the book and the aesthetics and loyalty to the source material of the movie is what makes Watchmen excellent for me no matter what form it's being presented in.

  • Wasn't there a reason for the squid?

  • i liked the comic book more than the movie.....but the movie was still really AWESOME!!! but this ending was a lot more creative....

  • Look, sure the GIANT SPACE SQUID FROM OUTTA NOWHERE HOLY CRAP was cool in the comic book, but to anybody watching it in the movie, it would have been a completely ridiculous and unnecessary giant space flea from outta nowhere, holy crap.

The Manhattan project (ho ho) nicely streamlined a movie that wouldn't really work any other way.

  • I agree, i made this movie before the watchmen came out, it was a promotional video for my Rorschach movie.

  • I think framing Dr. Manhattan was a good way to simplify the plot without really changing it. I'm really glad they stayed as loyal to the novel as they did.

  • they could put that on the end of the real movie id be half happy!

  • Good job!

My 2 cents on the movie's ending:

PRO: The changes were required compromises to tell the story lucidly in a reasonable time, allowing the movie to be made and enjoy commercial success, thus opening the door for more high-budget adaptations of things I like into film.

CON: Never compromise, even in the face of armegeddon. Never compromise.(though I suppose a point of Watchmen is how Rorshach's binary world view is obsolete in the real world of infinite grayscale...)

  • i thought the film was amazing i really did, like characters are just like they are in graphic novel, but i was disappointed that they removed the giant squid but hey where is complaining gonna get me really? the ending they did put in was the best possible ending they could have done, obviously minus the squid

  • meh

  • Instead of putting their energy into thinking of an ending that would work nicely, they should have thought of a way to make the giant alien work. I kinda blame audiences also for not getting anything really complex. They could have at least blown up only one city.

  • I liked the movie ending. it was a good adaption.

  • I thought the film was very good though, despite the fact that the ending was garbage.

  • Hated the films ending. The Squid made more sense than making it seem as if Dr. Manhattan ( who had been working for the American government for so many years ) just suddenly decided to destroy a bunch of cities one day. Also the government should have a lot of fun fighting against a "common enemy" that they cant even kill.

  • @caflagel Dude, Manhattan hates Humans, and life itself he abandoned them to go spend eternity in solitude in deep space. A giant Squid popping out of nowhere would've been retarded, but Jon goinging crazy and destorying some of the most populated places on earths makes so much more sense.

  • nice vid I know a lot hardcore fans were unhappy about the film's ending and if you can be creative in the expressing it cool. And continue to be a fan boy/girl and have fun with your love of the book. U-tube is a great site for fans of anything to play connect and share with other like minded people.

  • Nice vid. That's what I seem to be hearing much these days, utter disapproval at the ending of Watchmen. I do agree with sonicx7. They didn't cut out the Squid for the sake of ruining a masterpiece. They were taking the message behind the squid's inclusion in the novel and reworked it so that it was more relevant to our time. Much like Ironman and Fantastic 4 which both originally took place during Vietnam. We couldn't relate to the original versions so they were changed to reflect the times

  • wtf. a squid makes no sense, i like the movie ending better

  • Read the novel! THIS IS HOW IT ORIGINALLY HAPPENED!!!

  • Nostalgia vs Logic

  • It still makes no sense. And I still like the movie ending MUCH better.

  • read the book and it makes MUCH more sense

  • Yeah, the squid makes way more sense than the Manhattan thing.

  • lol better than the movie

  • at least this ending had the squid

  • Lego?You've gotta be kidding,Rated R for retarded.

  • just prroves my theory that the movie ending was a wise choice

  • I know I don't think the squid would have worked.

  • cool, but i wished it was longer...

  • this was really just to promote my Rorschach video. Didn't work out so well...

  • This sucked. PLUS, WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP SAYING THE ENDING IS DIFFERENT! WELL, 1 SCENE IS!!! THE ENDING IS THE SAME! THE KID EATS A BURGER, DROPS KETCHUP AND READS RORSCHACH'S JOURNAL!

  • HA HA HA! I guess you are right, but you know they are talking about the squid part anyway...

  • @zxv39 So true.

  • I finished Watchmen recently and now I hate Dr. Manhattan for what he did to Rorshach.

    Unforgivable.

    Just unforgivable.

  • you're stupid.

  • no he isn't, it was unforgivable. it was a wasted oppertunity and its his opinion

  • you obviously didn't understand the the point of it.

  • no, you aren't getting the point, its an opinion. Some people don't agree with the ending, some people think the way the characters were developed wouldn't have acted the way they did. You did, big deal, everyones happy. But it doesn't make him stupid

  • good god you're an idiot. if you paid attention to the movie or comic at all you would understand that dr. manhatten has no emotions what so ever. so to him killing rorschach was a necessary for the greater good. if he was developed to show some compassion he would have hesitated to kill him.

  • ok, now you are calling me an idiot, Im not even arguing with you, if thats what you want to believe fine go ahead, we are all happy with that, some people aren't going to see it that way. It doesn't make them idiots or stupid, I choose to believe DR. M. did have emotions, you don't. its not a big deal. you need to calm down.

  • lmao i'm just stating the facts. dr. manhattens lack of emotions is his only weakness.

come on now i thought everyone got that

  • Definately, but I wasn't upset with Dr. M. for the ending, I was more upset at how unrealistic it seemed. I don't believe that the russians would have given up a potential takeover oppertunity to help the Americans, nor do I believe that night owl or spectre would have let adrian go, knowing that they had only witnessed pt 1 of his plan...his evil, evil plan....

  • well the only reason they let him go is because they knew if they tried to get him the deaths of all those people would have been in vein, and for the most part it worked. it created world peace, and they didn't want to ruin that.. they are super heros after all. lol

and the russians began helping the americans out of fear that they may have been attacked next, even though it really wasn't an attack..

  • Right, but thats the frightening thing, That was only step 1 of Adrians plan. I always figured that he went on to rule the world such as Alexander the great hoped to do! I loved the book, its up there with my fav of all time. I know I'll be bashed for this but I always wished I knew what happened to Nite owl and spectre. If Adrian did take over the world or what.

  • hmm i never thought of that. i always guessed the news reporter at the end published rorshachs journal and world peace collapsed.. adrian taking over does sound like something he would do though. and didn't nite owl and the silk specter end up together at the end? i think they gave up crime fighting for good, took on another alias and started a family.

  • One would hope, but if you read, after they leave lauries mother's house, Spectre comments that she isn't done adventuring quite yet!

  • no thats not what happens they diceieded to become heros again but with new names

  • no your wrong if you read the graphic novel you would know that a giant alien-octopus apears and kills half of new york the what you said so your half right :D

  • what di i even put

  • yeah dude Rorschach couldn't comprehend the idea of killing thousands to save millions, so he told Dr. Manhatten to kill him.

  • Was the ending in the movie really different from that of the novel? How did it end in the movie?

  • i almost cried when Rorschach died...best character in the entire comic

  • same here

  • haven't read the comics but when I saw the movie, he was easily the most badass vigilante to come out of DC and when he died, my heart dropped

  • Wait a minute, wasn't there some kind of psychic shock-wave that the squid caused because its brain was cloned from a psychic? I didn't really get why they don't explain where they got the psychic's brain. Could someone explain, maybe I just missed it.

  • I'm not sure if it was a psychics brain, but just based off a human brain.

  • Yup, psychic's brain. Which is why the whole death upon impact occurred.

  • It was a normal human brain but it exploded because Veidt hadn't perfected teleportation yet and everything he sent exploded upon arrival so that's what went down.

  • sux that roarshach died ......

  • i dont get it can some one tell me how the ending was suposed to be?

  • read the comic....

  • this is cute. way to bring back classic soundgarden as well ;) I was disappointed because i wanted to see how they would recreate the squid, AND because i didn't agree with the whole making Dr. Manhattan a huge villain. other than that, the movie was freaking amazing. THE BEST OPENING CREDITS I have ever seen. freaking brilliant the way he chose to do that.

  • I KNOW I LOVED THE OPENING CREDITS TOO!

  • I love all the people who flip out over the ending.

If you look close, the bomb was called S.Q.U.I.D and so that makes your argument of "NO SQUID!" pointless.

Yes, I realize that the movie is not exactly the same as the book--but if the movie was, with lines read out exactly as they were written line for line... it would have been ALL talking and no movie and people would have gotten even more bored and left even more than they did.

I liked both--but not for the same reasons.

  • EXACTLY WHAT i THINK!

  • hivemind?

  • I enjoy both the book and the movie. The movie was an excellent adaptation. True the SQUID would have been nice but more talking would have made non-fan of the graphic novel angry and disappointed.

  • did roarchac died in the real ending

  • yup, same exact way... :(

  • you guys are missing the point that an ALIEN from another world or dimension was what Alan Moore was talking about!

I think Zack Snyder was not allowed to make the real ending because the government really does make fake UFOs and they want us to believe because they will use it as a tool in the future to trick us into accepting a new oppressive global order controlled by inbred descendants of Nimrod.

  • Well put

  • yea, i doubt it... hehehe

  • @rocxtar19 Retarded ass Consiracy theorist.

  • @codafett Uneducated hopium junkie, minimally educated reality denialist. Simpleton Ignoramus! Parrot-brained fanatic. Clueless Ideologue Disciple! :-D C'mon you big loser, at least call me something original, don't just use the same condescending 2 words you learned off the TV.

  • squid would have killed most new fans its really too far fetched

  • the squid would have looked really cool on the big screen.

but the ending in the movie was fine with me too.

but still the squid would have looked legit.

  • Not just loser, just a nerd!

  • Ive seen the movie but never read the novel, but can anyone tell me the original ending of watchmen?

  • This was the original ENDING!

  • well it's a lot to say. Best read the comic.

  • wat was the song at the end?

  • Black Hole Sun, Sound Garden

  • thanks

  • Cut out the movie ending, and cut in this video. Thus Watchmen movie is improved. Was that so fucking hard, Snyder?

  • I love the graphic novel, but the ending was terrible.

Transporting a giant squid thing (which doubles up as a bomb) to New York, it explodes on arrival. Thus stopping impending nueclear war, cause now earth believes in aliens.

What the fuck was Allen Moore smoking that day?

  • it's based on a speech given by Ronald Reagan. he said that the only way for the world to be at peace was through an alien attack. an "attack from above" would make the world come together in a way no other conflict could.

the ending is amazing. it shows the intricacy of Veidt's genius plan. the artists, the genetic engineering, the transporter, the framed assassination of himself, the murder of the comedian, the cancer list, everything.

  • No, earth now believes that there is a strong possibility it will be attacked by creatures from another dimension.

Which makes more sense than the movie. Lets face it, in 1985, if Dr Manhattan was seen as an agent of the US, it wouldn't have mattered that New York was destroyed. Russia would have gone ape-shit and let loose.

Also, there's no explanation as to how the Comedian found out Veidt's plan. At all. Really poor film-making.

  • Yes, some stuff in the movie didn't make to much sense to go along with the movie. anyway, i only made this so whiners would be a little happy to see the ending in motion...

  • hahahahahaha brilliant =]

  • I think the movie was a tad bit better..... honestly the book was really good but the movie was absolutely brilliant!!!!

I hate those people that always look through the whole movie just try to find flaws that make it different from the novel, just watch the movie......

  • I enjoyed both for different reasons, but I thought the book did have a little more depth and meaning behind it.

  • the plot and veidt's plan was more genius and intricate in the book

  • No, i think veidts plan was more intricate in the movie!

  • I got the watchmen comic and theres no squid was it cut or something?

  • ...What?

  • thats impossible...

  • you must not have looked carefully enough. or you got the wrong comic...

  • haha i think they just take out the squid and put nukes...and not only in NYC so its not that terrible

  • If they put nukes, how will THAT unite the world? The point of the squid was that there was an alien invasion and that the world needed to unite together. How could NUKES replace it???

  • My thoughts exactly. I really think the directors and script writers forgot about the coming together of the world as a whole. I also don't like the fact that "according to the movie" Dr. Manhattan leaves Earth at the end because he was "Framed"

  • My thoughts exactly. I really think the directors and script writers forgot about the coming together of the world as a whole. I also don't like the fact that "according to the movie" Dr. Manhattan leaves Earth at the end because he was "Framed"

    Nice lego squid BTW! :D

  • Technically, Manhattan DID leave earth because he was framed, or rather, the frame-up that he gave Wally Weaver and Moloch and the rest cancer led to his eventual distancing from humanity, which ended with him going to Mars and Laurie needing to change his mind about whether humans were worth saving.

For the movie, the beastie didn't have to be a squid, it could have been anything other-worldy and kept the concept pure - framing Manhattan for that, though, totally changes the core of the story.

  • Either way, the whole world unites since every country thinks that Doc Manhattan bombed them. I haven't seen the squid. Dx Gotta read the novel.

  • It's called the squid but is it really a living squid? (that would be retarted)

I haven't read the book sooooooo

  • Yes, well, no. Its an ALIEN. It was a plot to bring the world together and end all wars in the book, but it has been taken out of the movie. Cant wait to see how they replace it.

  • oh if its an alien squid thats pretty cool i was thinking of just some gay giant squad from the ocean. lol

  • LOL

"just some gay giant squad from the ocean. "

    I cracked up

and I think hes gonna focus more on what happens to the world rather then a random squid from outer space :P

  • in the comic book, it was an alien but i don't get it. how? and why an alien? what is it? how did he do it ?

  • The bad guy got a team of artist, like comic book artists and movie makeup artist, to come to an Island and build the alien. They used a real human brain to build the aliens, and when the whole creature was finished the bad guy killed all the artists. Then somehow the bad guy was able to teleport the alien to new york city, and when the alien got there, its brain died sending a shock wave throughout the city, killing everyone.

  • And it had to be an alien so that the people of the world thought something off earth destroyed newyork. If something from earth had done it, there would still be wars and what not. The point of the squid being sent to new york city was so that the world would unite against what they thought was an alien invasion when really it was a fake alien.

  • I love your ultra complex reading of the novel. Very insightful, very deep.

    Bad guy!

  • you morons it wasnt an alien Veidt genetically made it,

geez, i've read it once and get it,

  • He made it, but it was supposed to resemble an alien, to scare the world. I know what I am talking about MORON!

  • Before you go slinging around insults - He did NOT make the "alien" to scare the world. His main motive was to wipe the population out and start over because he felt that humanity at this point was not worth saving.

this is how Manhattan was framed, and also why he targeted Comedian and the others. He wanted them out of the way so that there was no hope for saving lives. Dig a little deeper next time. The comic is a bit more in depth than what you think.

  • defiantly not, if he wanted to wipe out the population he would have nuked the whole world, like in the movie, try reading the book, not watching leaked traliers next time

  • WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO?

  • hecatemacbeth

  • Then, why dr Manhattan didn't kill all the Watchmen at once ? Why did he wait to accomplish his plans ? The guy's god ! The new ending don't make any sense.

  • manhattan didn't have any plans, if you remember (both in the book and in the film).

he's also not god. he's not omniscient. the new ending makes decent sense, but is a lot less intricate and genius than the book's.

  • To tell you the truth, I think the Film's ending is better. The book stuck with reality so closely only to throw in some comic book ending. And Dr. Manhattan really didn't have a point in the book either. In the movie, it makes things more realistic.

  • I think you missed the whole point of the Squid. It was not to wipe anyone out at all, it WAS to unite the world against a common enemy to stop the coming nuclear war. As for the movie, the reason NYC was not the only city targeted is pretty bloody obvious (9/11 anyone) so the capitals of more countries were destroyed to unite the world. The comedian was targeted because he found out about the scheme, realised it would work and freaked out.

  • actually in the book it is only new York that is attacked smart ass...maybe thats why the movie sucked so bad...

P.S.- that lego stop motion thing was badass...props

  • the movie version might make more logical sense...but the comic book version was much more detailed and intricate, more planned, showing the true genius of the thing

  • Agreed. Its more about Doctor Manhattan than anything really. At first it doesn't seem that way but the ending really centers the story around him.

  • Nope. That's wrong. Read the book. Idiot.

I've read it over 30 times, but I can't imagine misunderstanding the ending like that on the FIRST even.

  • You fail.

  • haha

    cool

  • Awesome!
