Essentially this is the entire key to eliminating a deficit, and it's sad to see some people in Washington not understand this. Unfortunately this household debt example you use doesn't necessarily apply to government, because it HAS TO MEET certain obligations that were promised (Social security, Medicare, and other entitlements).
