Have you ever considered using really bright flashlights and Chinese lanterns to get a really "soft" fill for these kind of night shoots? That's what I'm testing for my next shoot.
@LongJourneys I don't know that I would use a bright flashlight in a china ball but the effect you are talking about is something that I like to do yes.. The China ball is a favorite tool of mine.. Usually you use a china ball when you want as you say "A soft fill" or when you want to fill up a room just a bit in a good 360 because the nature of the ball will throw the light in all directions.. I usually use a larger watt bulb with a regular medium screw base.
