This is a great song and the best of Foxton. Although the version with the string quartet is a nice and a nod to the Beatles i think this version is better. For one, the vocals come off better in the mix. Obvioiusly influenced by the Kinks especially the outro. Great stuff!
Ty LiftedHilux4x4. You are quite right that PCs weren't invented when this was written. I was making the reference with regard to the pleasure of turning on your PC (or laptop etc) and hearing such a classic song. Perhaps if I'd left off the sorry Smithers Jones bit at the end what I meant woulda been clearer. Anyway, I'm off now to return to my English Rose. All the best bud' from Sim
Weller paints a perfect snap shot of little England, just as ray Davis had previously in the sixties - Brilliant - try and catch the classic version too on Setting Sons album
@malcolmnash ... And a perfect little snapshot of the US circa early 21st century. What happened in England often seems to happen in the US a bit later. :-)
I went to explore southern England for a fortnight with my (then) girlfriend and we listened to the 25 years CD all the time and loved it - a lot of landlords and landladies in the pubs loved to play my CD as well - it was great. Ieft the CD in the AVIS car rental car - I hope it went into good hands.
@elirosen1391 Forget what the others are saying mate its Bruce all the way with Weller adding some harmony and doing the outrow. Shame Bruce couldnt write good songs consistantly but Weller heard a couple of gooduns worth recording. A great song by Bruce.
This is just far too heavy for the song, i like the idea behind the album version, nice and relaxed in the middle of a heavy teenage powered album, a nice touch, this just doesn't work, sorry brucey boy.
@johlufc , Weller wrote the last bit of this song mate. From 2.12, "Put on the kettle and make some tea".
Weller was never my favourite, but to call him 'over-rated' is way off the mark. He wrote most of the Jam stuff in his early 20's. Aloof and with a big opion of himself yes, but also a genius
Nice to now that the youth of today still know good music when they here it. Check out the other stuff from Paul Weller, He's the master of good music!
this takes me back to school, i got into the jam then, really great song , its got all the ingrdients of what it was like, truly they dont make them like this any more.
just had my smithers jones talk with my boss this morning.

Foxton´s best song before See-Saw - glad he let Weller sing it.
Heard it the first time when i bought the Snap-Collection, only knew the orchestrated version before. Far better, this one.
