  • just had my smithers jones talk with my boss this morning.

  • Paul weller is The Jam

  • The song is goos = makes versions good

  • brilliant

  • @Proust2020: I agree. The string quartet version is a little cluttered sonically.

  • one of the best bands ever i never get tired of the jam

  • Still relevant today as it was then .....cheers

  • for top jam fan Lana...k.t.f.

  • This is a great song and the best of Foxton. Although the version with the string quartet is a nice and a nod to the Beatles i think this version is better. For one, the vocals come off better in the mix. Obvioiusly influenced by the Kinks especially the outro. Great stuff!

  • boss toon

  • Ty LiftedHilux4x4. You are quite right that PCs weren't invented when this was written. I was making the reference with regard to the pleasure of turning on your PC (or laptop etc) and hearing such a classic song. Perhaps if I'd left off the sorry Smithers Jones bit at the end what I meant woulda been clearer. Anyway, I'm off now to return to my English Rose. All the best bud' from Sim

  • "brilliant"!!

  • its 5.30 in the evening, its raining cats n dogs and Im jumping around punching the air....jeez this stuffs good!

  • nice one gordy ;)

  • great song love it

  • Put on your slippers turn on your pc

    It's all a part of feeling groovie : )

It's time to relax now you've worked your arse off - sorry Smithers Jones

  • @simdude68 :Sim listen to it again. PC's wern't invented as a houshold item when this was written...lol. It's turn on the TV.

  • Great tune, great band, their lyrics meant something, only the stone roses came anywhere near them!!!

  • Great bass player Bruce Foxton.

  • @vorn29 nice one, hes a legend

  • Comment removed

  • I prefer the orchestral version tbh, still an awesome track though.

  • a good 3 minute song that has a simply great third minute..immortal

  • It's a really sad song. Damn, The Jam were so good.

  • Stevie, sure is, nothing changes, Labour spend all the money and Tories save it all.

  • Weller paints a perfect snap shot of little England, just as ray Davis had previously in the sixties - Brilliant - try and catch the classic version too on Setting Sons album

  • @malcolmnash used to be my favorite album probably still 1 of the best

  • @malcolmnash ... And a perfect little snapshot of the US circa early 21st century. What happened in England often seems to happen in the US a bit later. :-)

  • @malcolmnash setting sons is my best album, good too see you enjoy it,

  • I went to explore southern England for a fortnight with my (then) girlfriend and we listened to the 25 years CD all the time and loved it - a lot of landlords and landladies in the pubs loved to play my CD as well - it was great. Ieft the CD in the AVIS car rental car - I hope it went into good hands.

  • the jam make the most real, and true to life songs of any artist EVER.

  • Who's on lead vocal? Weller or Foxton?

  • @elirosen1391 mainly Weller but foxton has some input

  • @bigredfan100 Foxton wrote this song......

  • @JoeCalzaghe46and0 . Weller wrote the last bit of this song mate. From 2.12, "Put on the kettle and make some tea....................".

  • @bigredfan100 mainly foxton, weller in background

  • @bigredfan100 fail, main vocals are all foxton.

  • @elirosen1391 Forget what the others are saying mate its Bruce all the way with Weller adding some harmony and doing the outrow. Shame Bruce couldnt write good songs consistantly but Weller heard a couple of gooduns worth recording. A great song by Bruce.

  • @johnnylongback Alrighty, thank you.

  • my ceramic rabbit

  • Put on the kettle and make some tea

  • love this song

  • My favorite Jam song!

  • Mine too!

  • This is just far too heavy for the song, i like the idea behind the album version, nice and relaxed in the middle of a heavy teenage powered album, a nice touch, this just doesn't work, sorry brucey boy.

  • The Boss wants to see you alone.

Lots of this going on nowadays.

  • @redwaz these days it's mass sackings

  • ...and this don't belong to that over-rated twat Weller either.Love Bruce.

  • overrated? Don't think so mate

  • @johlufc , Weller wrote the last bit of this song mate. From 2.12, "Put on the kettle and make some tea".

Weller was never my favourite, but to call him 'over-rated' is way off the mark. He wrote most of the Jam stuff in his early 20's. Aloof and with a big opion of himself yes, but also a genius

  • @walshy2866 Hmm, I think his dad wrote it all!!!

  • Work and work and work and work till you die cos theres plenty more fish in the sea to fry!

  • i love this- my parents listen to it and im 15 but still think the jam = amazing!

  • Nice to now that the youth of today still know good music when they here it. Check out the other stuff from Paul Weller, He's the master of good music!

  • You have awesome parents!!!!!!!! Rock on!!!!

  • @VampireShadowpuppet: same, i'm only 13, and my dad got me into the Jam. He's such a big fan, got all thier albums and singles!

  • Foxton´s best song before See-Saw - glad he let Weller sing it.

Heard it the first time when i bought the Snap-Collection, only knew the orchestrated version before. Far better, this one.

  • This is one of my Favourite Jam songs along side The Butterfly Collector.

Also it's the best version too. <3

  • Absolutely. The Electric Version blows away the acoustic, and it is pure fantastic JAM!

  • the butterfly collector is a fine fine tune :)

  • This is the Jam at their best..

  • agreed!

  • this takes me back to school, i got into the jam then, really great song , its got all the ingrdients of what it was like, truly they dont make them like this any more.

  • its the best version with the orchestra... does bruce foxton sing in beat surrender?

  • They just dont write songs like this anymore.

loved it since i was a nipper.

    class......

  • Love the album version with the orchestra behind it too !!.

    Awesome :-)

  • One of my favourite Jam tracks - along with "little boy soldiers" and "thick as thieves". Thanks for the upload.

  • yeah

  • I've been looking for this as well.

    Thank you.

  • great thanks been looking for this version for years!
