  • FAKE!!!!

  • i meant around 6.07,as parkamark says

  • I'd ave 'er on all fours

  • hehe

  • If you add the tag yt:stretch=16:9 it will make the video the right aspect ratio in YouTube

  • did anyone watch fridays show? how did he do it?

  • At 6:07, the far left ball moves upwards. The only explanation for this is a split screen (and a hidden assistant who didn't properly push that ball into the tray when he/she was replacing the balls whilst Derren was wasting 20 seconds faffing around writing the results down on his piece of card). His explanation of averages on the follow up show to determine the numbers is just plain and utter bull shit.

  • I think the stupid noise that he made around that time is meant to distract you from the other side of the screen.he also seems to grow a lot taller when he moves in front of the balls. That could have been filmed at a separate moment.

  • Wrong, there is a possibility of a split screen i'm not denying that but there are various other deciding factors for the ball to have moved upwards.

  • 6:08 - Camera shake on left stops moving, camera shake on right is still shaking.

  • Lol this is well cool but when I watched it I kid of knew he was going to get it right that was why I was like ZOMG!!!

    D3RR3N 4 L1F3

  • I really really wish it isnt a frozen image, But all the "we here are live" pointing at the spot he's standing in!! Hmmm Maybee meaning we are here, the balls are not, infact he never says they are!

Also he stutters as he walks over after the numbers are wrote, as if he almost walked through before they switched it off, he also looks over to somebody towards the entrance to check he's okay to go...

  • I agree that the trick has got to be more impressive than camera angles. Have you watched DB shows before? its normally about the brain and psychology.

I think the fact that he didn't reveal his "prediction" until after they were drawn is the key to it. If there wasn't some kind of trickery there, he would have laid his cards on the table and shown us his guess *before* the draw. But what do I know, lol.

  • of course it isn't to do with camera messing or fixing..it's just too unimpressive and a waste of time. i don't think anyone in their right mind would cause all this hype about predicting the lottery, just to turn around and go "only joking, i just fucked around with some clever camera work, jokes on you"

  • ha fair point. i agree after all the amazing things he's done before, doing a trick with a split screen seems way too easy and not the sort of thing he would do.

i just hope its something impressive! we'll find out later i guess

  • end of the day its bull! Fix or he messed with the cameras, simple as, see how he didn't reveal them 0.1 seconds after the numbers we're drawn... pissed around writing them down for 10-20 secs... If you actually believe its real then i feel for you :(

  • This is bloody amazing

  • Man hes not using space age gagets for this shit like half you people are suggesting. It's probably something simple like it always is. Just wait and see.

  • On Friday, Derren Brown is going to welcome us into the space age.

  • Lol told you.

  • so did he win the lottery?

  • channel 4 banned Derren from entering :)

  • Well, that's what he says.

  • the balls could be special ... ;-)

maybe they're controlled - gagets have come far afterall !

  • frames 6.09 - 6.11 give it away

  • at 6.06 the end ball moves upwards slighty. When he turns then round they haven't been placed in carefully, it looks like a rush job

  • Does anyone really know 100% how he achieved the effect or are they just theories?

  • Right, here goes:-

Camera 1 (hand-held) was used right up till the wide shot of the studio, this was live!

Camera 2 (static camera at back) this was pre-recorded in order for the cameraman to get out of shot.

Camera 3 (static camera, but using motion control) The side with the balls is pre-recorded up till the lottery bloke says "23" when saying the numbers in order, this is then mixed to the live shot, which is why the ball at the end is raised up a bit. (the assistant placed it wrong)

  • Camera 3a (static camera, but using motion control) The side with the TV is live, as you never see Derren walk past the stand with the balls, this is to avoid him vanishing during the split screen process.

The motion control is programmed to move around to give it the effect of a hand held camera, but fails as it looks so false.

  • I did question the camera movement but no one knows 100%, how he achieved it until Friday.

  • Please don't denegrate the word "theory" by misusing it to mean "guess". Lots of scientists have to live with the dire consequences of people doing that, and thus putting up with idiots saying "but evolution is only a theory..."

  • They are just theory's.

  • More like he "wasn't allowed."

  • So did he buy a lotto ticket?

  • he wasn t allowed

  • It wouldn't make any difference, everyone who buys a ticket for every draw is trying to predict the numbers! If anyone trying to predict the lottery numbers got banned from buying a ticket, no one would buy one. Also, remember theres no actual prediction here, just a reveal. It's a split screen 100%.

  • The big breast to make a lot of people very rich?

  • Well, I think the balls could be electronic with screens on them, the results could be transmitted via wifi? Possible.

  • I have LOADS of comments. The stand with the balls is see-through: you can clearly see this when he walks behind it. The colour of his cuffs doesn't change - there are blue lights surrounding him at the start. The camera is handheld and moving - so doing a live splitscreen will be difficult - if that was the case they would have used a camera with a fixed position.

But the guys a magician - so it's clearly a trick in there somewhere!

  • Something does appear to happen at 6:05 on the video....and 6 and 5 are the numbers that Derren repeatedly mentions in his intro. Is he giving us a clue?

  • The misdirection promised is that live. Well, it IS at that point. BUT not after the TV feed is turned off!

'Simply' edit here whilst the balls are switched - using technology to make the broadcast appear continuous - but actually 'lose' maybe 5 seconds of action whilst someone takes out the first row of balls (joined for speed) and drops in the correct ones they had ages to gather.

    Hardest thing? - getting permissions!

  • He's not doing "magical" tricks a-la Davin Blaine. This is different.

  • He's a magician, but way better than Blaine.

  • he should show real numbers balls 1st then see live lotto! if he right! than late show his numbers

  • hmmm - in the results prize breakdown NOBODY won the jackpot last night. Interesting.

Cant wait until Friday to find out how he did it.

  • you probably won't find out how he REALLY did it tho ;)

  • The 2nd Camera was not live. I think it was there to make you THINK the setup was different to what it actually was. But as to what it really was...I don't know. But there may be something in the fact that he stays perfectly still from the time the 1st ball comes out to the last.

  • Except he doesn't stay perfectly still. If you watch carefully, he does wobble slightly - especially the board he's holding.

  • Yes! Spot on! Absolutely right! Derren Brown has proven again that he isn't scared of using technology.

    Go see these:

    v=vsiDhrhvxfU

    v=VpN4jYal0aI

Then at part 3, pause at 6min56. A pound biljet has 2 serialnumbers, underneath the amount (10pound) and at the right. See how clever he marked the first s/n out with three dots. Because that's too hard to fake. But removed the old s/n at the right and printed over it. See it for yourself

  • GO DERREN!!!

  • I think i may of sussed his trick out.

1ST he says its taken a year to work on. Well supposing he filmed a whole load of footage with diferent balls on the stand and on the card. Then at the last miniute when he turns the tele off he just spliced the footage of those balls he previously filmed to look like he predicted them.

  • 14million different combinations, check my explanation

  • Comment removed

  • The only other thing I can possible say is that maybe that thing the balls are sitting on is some sort of voice activated printer responding to the numbers he counts out but yet again this does not match with the strange camera, the freeze just before he moves over and the balls not moving at all.

  • The "year" part is probably him making a program to make the camera fading and splitting all automated or something stupid. my previous post on the page prior I am SURE it is split camera and will be disapointed if he does not admit this. It's be found out purely because of an assistants hiccup in replacing the balls (see prev post).

  • All good theories. My first thought was maybe it's possible to physically laser burn the numbers on from afar. But that doesn't fit the "misdirection" promise does it?

    Can't wait to find out!

  • the reason you don't see it popup is because it'sa fade! but you can see the camera jiggle is automated rather than human for sure.

  • You guys are idiots. Just be patient, yeah? Wait till he tells you how he did. Until then, he did the show, your a viewer sitting at home ;-)

  • He made such a big deal about this being career breaking and him spending a year on this so if it was just two cameras spliced together to mask the left side i'd be bitterly disappointed. Plus that really isn't his style =/ I was hoping more for memorising the averages of numbers after they've been drawn in previous weeks or something like that xD

  • Watch the red door and pipework in the background during the camera cuts. There are three cameras involved.

My guess is that they used is a robo-cam with a pre-programmed sequence of camera moves that mimick a hand-held camera. Earlier they made a video tape using the exact same sequence of moves. During the programme a spilt-screen shows the left half from tape to hide the stoge who swaps the balls.

  • I noticed that his hand is over his mouth when the annoucements of the lottery balls are made on the tv. I think there must be something to do with that.

  • It's a split screen. The shaking of the camera is done by the editing crew, on the whole image (there is always more space being filmed than what actually shows up in the screen, so it's just like moving a sheet of paper under a mask, for example) to make it look like a split screen is less probable.

Anyway, I can't be sure that's how he did it, but it would be a pretty trivial way of accomplishing the same effect. It would really have been a lot better if he had shown the numbers beforehand.

  • The key word is projection. I think hypno is right he mentions 'projected on the side of a building' why would he say that?. Also on his blog he posts something titled ' Derren Brown The projection tonight in London will be on the Tate Modern, NOT Marble Arch. And there should be sound and everything. '

  • What if the balls were all concave and the numbers were projected up into the balls?

If you don't get what I mean by this concaved effect, go to google images and look up 'hollow illusion'.

So the balls seem round, but are infact cut in half and numbers are projected up through the base or off camara.

Long shot, but it was something that popped to mind at this late hour.

  • dude looking at the video I really think you are right

  • It seems like such a glaring error when the video splice was so perfect -- almost makes you think it's intentional and Derren will say on Friday "ohh you saw the raised ball didn't you?!"

  • Numbers on the lamppost in the original 40 second Events trailer were: 2 25 10 6 47

    Numbers for this draw were: 2 11 23 28 35 39 (Bonus: 15)

The whole theme of 'The Events' is misdirection. Keeping this in mind, these are my conclusions:

There is a sticker with 2 on the lamppost = 2

    On the lamppost there is a sticker with 47. Add 4 + 7 = 11

    There is also 25, 10 and 6. 6 + 2 = 8. 8 + 5 = 13. 13 + 10 = 23

    Also 4*7=28

    25 + 6 + 4 = 35 OR 25 + 10 = 35

    25 + 10 + 4 = 39

    10 + 5 = 15 (Bonus ball!)

  • I think your not getting the point, if he revealed the numbers before the draw, it would be a prediction.

Clever as it is, the numbers were shown after the draw, which is a reveal, not a prediction. Anything could have happened to those white balls in the interim.

As I said before, these number games people are posting can be played with any numbers that are anywhere, add this, subtract and divide that, it's the nature of maths.

  • Derren Brown Explained by ME: watch from 6mins, the ball on the left is aligned with all the balls then at around 6:09 the camera stalls and the ball actually rises. Split camera with fade. solved !

  • I don't see it, looks exactly the same to me

  • it's really hard to see. go to 5:18 then 6:09. 5:18 completely in line with one another yes? 6:09 the left is risen!

  • oh yeah i see it now! that just makes this whole thing completely boring though :(

  • yeh it's pretty poor form by Derren! I really wonder what he will say on Friday though. I doubt he will mention anything about camera trickery.

  • i hope the ball just randomly popped up by accident and we're wrong and he actually did predict the lottery!

  • yeh it's just that it pops up as the panning stops and a couple of seconds before he moves from his static position. oh well :p

  • Well spotted dude, but we'll just have to see on Friday now! ;D

  • As much as I wanted to believe he did it some other way I think your right. However he must come up with some bullshit on Friday to explain how he did it. He can't just come out and say "it was just old-fashioned camera trickery!" We'll have to wait and see.

  • There is never a clear point at which the ball pop ups. I.e. you cant go to any frame then find that the next frame the ball is in a different position. Which makes me suspect if the ball did rise (Which is difficult to discern as the difference is like a pixel for most of the shoot.) It'll may have been because they switched on the lights for filming and the balls expanded a little.

Could be a splice but I have my doubts thats the way he did it.

  • yeah I noticed the ball popped up on the live broadcast and rewound my set box and couldn't find the place where it happened. It's only on this youtube vid where its obvious here because you can swap 2 points with the same camera angle

  • Exactly, before that, the camera is all Cloverfield, but right before he walks over, the camera is 100% still.

  • Derren is a great showman.

  • yeah your so right so i'll not bother watching fridays show now!!!!

  • Advert

23 was the 32 on the reversing bus @ 0.32

11 was given by the lamp/sign posts, the girl reaching for the balloon and bollards

    Forwardsplash

    4x7 = 28 (47ft, fiXed ;] )

    2006... 20+6+9 = 35 (flip the 2006 for the nine)

    9x7 = 63... fliped 39

2 = 2-tier, or on the advert.. the incomplete sign post numbers (0 & 2)

  • That's just stupid! You can get so many combinations of numbers from the numbers that were in the advert.

  • Yeah, your right... however it is Derren Brown's style to give u the outcome before the event. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some kind of relationship on the Friday show

  • Not to mention on the forward-splash clue website, the key line was... whether you want to flip, turn, slide or reverse. Unfortunately tho the site seems to have been hacked x]

  • Using his clues website & the advert you can obtain these numbers! The key was to read into the lines! No I didn't win, but check it out ->> forwardsplash(dot)com & youtube(dot)com/watch?v=gRs1vydbYHY :]]
