I got here by way of the kid who 'professionally' scalloped his own fretboard with a file and a sanding block. I think your work is just a bit nicer, hahaha.
And you let the song keep playing.... ah, you are a guitarist indeed. I'm seriously thinking about scalloping now, thank you (not on my own though, I don't trust myself enough to scrape wood off my baby.)
Hi, are you able to scallop a fender stratocaster american standard? and also would you recommend from a certain fret onwards or is it better to do the entire neck?
@Frettrend Hey, sure I can scallop that neck!. Some people scallop from the 12th fret upwards to the 21 or 22. It depends on your style of playing and your preferences. If you do a lot of complicated chords, I wouldn't recomend scalloping the first frets (or the frets you mainly use for chords) because if you press the strings hard, the chords can go out of tune.
@midget6mafia Hello. The scallop depth depends on the type of neck and the top side markers. If the customer doesn't care about losing the top side markers, I can go as deep as they want. Yes, after the scalloping process, a coat of lacquer is applied.
My bud and I have just learned how to do this and are thinking of starting our own company. I know you probably don't want competition (but we wouldn't be competition anyways XD) but would you say that offering the service is a worthwhile project to take on?
i see you put a glossy clear finish on the fret board when you were finished. I didn't know you could do that to a fret board. What kind of finish do you use on it, it looks great.
Question: I have a neck-through steinberger, which weighs about 7lbs. About how much would the shipping be both ways from Philadelphia, plus the cost of a full scallop? Thanks!
Basically the fingers no longer come into contact with the fretboard, just the strings. John McLaughlin has said it makes bending easier. Mostly they seem to be used by heavy metal players so I guess it helps with speed too. Ritchie Blackmore was the first person I ever saw with one.
I am a blues Player, my style is along Hendrix meets Steve Morse and you are right most metal players use them.
You can really grab the strings and vibrato like nobodies business.
I use to own two Malmsteen Strats in the 90's and Yngwie actually signed one of them for me when I opened for him at a small club. Joe Bonamassa bought one of them off of me at his house.
I miss those Strats, I am thinking of getting a custom made scallop guitar made.
Walliot, I have a few questions on your services, I have a Steinberger (spirit gt-pro deluxe) headless guitar. Can you scallop Thru-neck/Set-neck guitars, specifically from 12 and up? My second question is for looks, do you know how to place inlays on fretboards? In specifically in the style of a Steve Vai Jem with the vines.
I can scallop a neck thru/set neck guitar with no problems. The only drawback is that unless you live close to me, the shipping costs will be very high due to size and weight of the package.
Now for inlay work, I currently offer dot markers. Elaborate vine inlays are possible but are very time consuming and special tools are needed. I currently don't offer them because I'm on a tight schedule. I'f you really want to have it done, let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.
@PietriGuitars Pietri money is no issue, you just tell me what I would owe you I'll pay you it. About the inlays, its something I would really like having done, I don't mind how long it takes or how much more it is. Give me an estimate though and we should be fine.
Walliot does great work. He did my neck on a Squire 85' rosewood neck and it's awesome. Great rates and quick turn around and unlike other scallop luthiers doesnt feel the need to down grade other peoples work to make his own shine!
if you want your guitar looks very shiny, you must use a spray called " SPRAY CLEAR" i just do scalloped on my fret guitar and i spray it with spray clear and it very shiny.... :-)
scallop yourself a maple fretboard neck and then spray a couple of thin highgloss clear nitro cellulose lacquer on it and buff up to 2000 wet and buff it!
Why not scallop a neck with jumbo frets? I would think the higher fret would keep the fingertip that much further from the wood, thus enhancing the effect. Have you had a negative experience with such a setup?
No, but I've tried one a few times and didn't see significant change in tone or playability... The high frets, however, were fantastic for bending, they just screeched like a banshee from hell!
he's then telling lie! he does not want the feature of the fretboard that helps him play so fast (which is actually the only thing he can do) be known or wants to deliberately discourage people scallope their fretboards.
just do not fuck your fretboards up to play like malmsteen.
malmsteen simply suckzz! today even on youtube there are thousands of malmsteens (and at least even tens of those better than him!)
I dont own one, but knew someone that did it to his guitar. He was really fast on the neck, but what he did was he never "Pressed down" til he hit the fretboard. That would be more difficult and would sharpin every note. You basically float above the frets (only really fretting the notes) & playing the fret positions sounding the notes but not pressing them to the board. You can simulate this on your basic neck by only pressing down to sound the note, but not hitting the fretboard
so when you play on a scalloped neck, is it really that much easier to push down the string and fret the note, than on a nonscalloped neck? if i wanna shred super fast like joe stump, would scalloping my fretboard really help that much?
You don't need to scallop your fretboard, this is only a mod some players make to their guitars in order to have more sting control and easier vibrato.
AAAAHHH necesito ayuda . gracias mano.
Well in case of rosewood, You sand it smooth, oil it, and buff the hell out of it until you get the desired shine. If you have a buffing wheel, it will do wonders!
Scalloping ebony is not much harder than any other type of wood, it is simply more dense than the softer maple or rosewood fretboards. Also ebony is a lot easier to polish and shine than rosewood. If your neck is properly adjusted you normally should not have to adjust the truss rod(regardless if you have or dont have scallops)except when you go play in another place where the temp is colder or hotter than where you are (sometimes if you change the string guage, a slight adjustment is needed
Not at all. When you scallop a neck, only a little bit of the fretboard is removed by the carving proccess. I have scalloped a friend's ibanex wizard neck (Very thin) and no adjustments were needen. It did not lose integrity
If you do this, your fingers do not touch the fretboard and hence, no friction is produces. This will let you play faster and have less finger fatigue. It DRAMATICALLY increases your control over the strings allowing you to do greater bends without the worry of having the string slip from under your finger during that mega 3 note bend :)

Please do not send the entire guitar unless the neck cannot be removed from the body. the shipping costs would be higher if you send the entire guitar instead of the neck.
