how does this one hold an edge, I am looking for a bush craft knife for around a 100 bucks, I was looking at the bigger version of this, the Javalina, or however you spell it. I am kinda thinking this one because of its small nice size, would you agree?
Entrek Knive are really good quality knifes. I'm a proud owner of the Javalina, something like a bigger badger. wonderfull blade, hardened to around 57 rockwell, thick blade that keeps it sharness...
one advice to everyone, if you are cutting a wooden stick for the tent, make sure the notch for the rope isnt too deep! then the pole will break when its windy :)
on a knife this size the Steel has no bearing on the price.. the difference between the cheapest steel and most expensive steel is no more than $10.. You are paying for Design, production, manufacturing and distribution.. Companies that charge you $100US extra for Steel, are just selling you hype, not steel. 440C is a good steel if treated well.
not entirley true. a chopper made with 3v would cost 50 dollars alone for the steel. The price difference also comes in with manufacturing. More expensive steels are harder to work with, and harder to heat treat then 440c.
Yeah.. well.. I'm not sure how you would explain me having a 17" OAL 3V satin finished blade handmade from scratch 100% custom for less than some of these production blades in 1095 or etc.. Anyway.. all steels are good with the right maker.. even 3V is terrible if a clown heat treats it :) You are probably right on the $50 worth of steel though... Thats why i said "On a knife this size" :)
What I was getting at is different steels can be much harder to work with. The example given was a bit too extreme to hold up to scrutiny. My side and yours. 3v is very difficult to heat treat for example, and 440C is on the easy side of things. Grinding S30v gets very hot.
440c is an excellent steel, and anyone who says otherwise is a fool. You have a valid point about people jumping on steel hype, but there are more costs associated with manufacturing than realized.
I didn't read any hostility, just healthy discussion.. I doubt anyone read your post as hostile. :) Production can be expensive.. but trust me.. in many cases it can also be a lot cheaper than you think.. Knives like this entrek (I am not sure about this specific knife) are Laser Cut, then Ground etc all with robots for $20. (no.. I am not undervaluing) its mass production. the true cost in all manufacturing is where human labour is involved.
Just to let you know, Entreks are waterjet cut, and that is the extent of any machines. The grinding and all finishing is done by the hand of Ray Ennis himself.
If you order from me then your knife will be finished the day you order your knife...
Just letting you know that ray doesnt use 5 axis machines to do all the work. Nothing wrong with it, he just hand makes them.
They make a sort of tar/glue you can paint over the wound in the tree. That seals off the part damaged so insects can't attack the inside of the tree. I bet you got alot of tree lover hate mail. Maybe spreading that covering on the hacked area would pacify them? It did kind of make me sad...
yes I got alot of tree huggers messaging me who didnt watch the whole video, I stated more than once the tree was a standing dead tree, I should have showed it, but the top half was broken off from a storm, it was dead/dying, thats why I hacked at it...I know not to cut down live trees for fun, lol...
made in america means expensive to begin with but they also fo a sub temperature freeze after the heat treat to further harden the steel...also an extra cost to make so it gets passed on to the buyer..
its not much higher than the price of a RAT3, and 440C is 5 times more than 1095. Not a better or worse steel, just different, but just saying that the prices are not bad. The MSRPs are high, but who the hell ever pays MSRP for ANY knife?
I like the video pretty cool knife. Just one criticism (not because I am trying to be Mr. safety hall monitor) you should wear gloves. They just help out a lot. Take care brother keep 'em coming.
there is pine arouhd it seen in the backround, but I dont know what this is? I cna only identify trees currently by their leaves...not bark, and this trees upper portion was broken off by a recent storm so there is no top to be seen...but if you cna identifdy it 100% by the bark alone I woudl like to know what it was, I am familiar with pine, but didnt think this was pine due to how hard it was...
Some pines are fairly hard when still alive or green. After drying out they tend to be softer.
if it's pine you should have smelled it when you cut it open. It looks like a pine because of those dead branches and the bark pattern. I couldn't tell you exactly although it looks liek a scotch pine.
the bark also looks a lot like Poplar bark. Poplar isn't real hard but it is durable and very straight grained. It's also very stringy when it's split for firewood.
perhaps it was a pine then the tyop was broken off from a strom as mentioned so Im guesing it wasnt dead for too long yet..maybe that woudl explain it beign very hardm not green anymore, but still freshly dried? I didnt smell that telltale pine smelol though I know what thats like, but maybe thats also due to it not being fresh?
The sheaths for all the models with out guards (minus the destroyer) are all the same looking, so you can just look at the ones without guards. But he showed the sheath in the unboxing as well.
one thing on the cutting technique you were mentioning: I think that you're def right in that you should hold your knife steady instead of moving it to cut. But rather than holding your hand close in, it is better to hold it out and down so that your hand, forearm, and upper arm are almost straight. I find that it puts less stress on the wrist and elbow by having them be straight and take the pressure in a linear way rather than tensing up at an angle.
I agree but I dont think what Im going here is "hard work" for more cutting yes a natural grip is better than a saber grip and I wodul brae the knife aginst the knee as well mentioned in another comment./..
Is that twig ironwood or something? If not that knife looks pretty damn blunt to me!
