@nottonite Because there are no pin holes on my bats, and this is also a demo to show people who don't have pins on their wheels and still want to attach a bat on the wheel.
With this method, I didn't have to cut off the plate with the wire, I only inserted the pin tool under the clay while turning the wheel and voila! In the past I've ruined a few platters when cutting off, I couldn't hold the wire tight enough.
After watching your clip I went to my wheel and made a large plate. I remembered something I've read and after centering I spread the clay to the aprox. size of the bottom, I put on it a thin round piece of dense foam and I cut the clay off the wheel with the wire. After that I put another bat over the foam and flipped the whole thing over, but the second bat on the wheel head, lifted the first bat off. After that I proceeded with the throwing of the plate as usual.
Great video! I'm sorry it was over before I could see how you cut the piece off the bat, I sometimes have problems with large pieces. Or may be you just wait for the piece to pop off the bat by itself? What kind of bat did you use, was it plaster?
Thanks! I used particleboard with veneer on the top side. I did cut the platter when finished but I have trouble editing that part into this video. The trick to cut a large platter is with your both thumbs holding down the wire on the bat and straightens the wire as much as possible and spins the wheel. It's important to cut it off when wet; otherwise it will be very hard to cut it.
Well thrown. Does the rim rise as it stiffens?

Why did you use veneer on your bat? Was it to make the release of your platter easier? You would still have to cut it with a wire, right?

Your work is wonderful. I am wondering why you use a clay attachment for your bat instead of the bat pins?
