My problem was the geared timing belt pulley. I'm changing all the pulleys. $250 from Advance Auto. VERY easy to do. Pull the radiator, condenser, and crank pulley. Pull off the timing belt cover and there you are. Took about 30min. to get to everything. Hopefully this'll help you out.
I have an '02 WRX. Just hit 140k miles and have the same wierd sounds coming from the drivers side of the motor. A little more pronounced on my car. We're tearing into it tomorrow and going to see if it's the tensioner pulley or idle pulleys. Good place to start, and from what I understand, not hard to get to and replace. I'll let you know what we find out if you care.
really, i checked all the pulleys and they seemed fine. do you have a pic of the bad pulley, was it obviously really bad?

@kaoticrecoil2
it ended up being the rod bearings, the builder said that the wrong bearings were in the correct box from the manufacture.
