Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett had one of the most beautiful minds I've ever had the privilege of even glimpsing. He was tremendously and beautifully brilliant and had such inspirational creativity that he not only heavily inspired the Beatles, Bowie, and Nirvana just to name a few as well as most every Floyd album up until Waters left but he truly changed the world of music as we know it! The world rarely ever gets the chance to experience a mind like Barrett's. Shine on you magnificent diamond RIP.

Excellent choice of music. I think Emily is a masterpiece. As a kid in the 70s, I was into the later Floyd. After learning about "the other guy," "the original guy," I wanted to check it out and I must say, the stuff with Syd was very uplifting and happy sounding compared to the 70s Floyd. Songs like Apples & Oranges, Arnold Layne, Emily, etc.. I consider that the REAL sound of the Floyd. RIP Syd

I was with a good friend and fellow floyd head, we was sitting there smoking some funky green shit, and we heard the news, we was heartbroken, but both glad we was in the company of eavh other to stop us blubbering and so we continued to smoke like hell for the rest of the day. A student living across the hall was mesmerized. "Who is that?" he asked. I gave him a brief music history lesson on the history of Pink Floyd. A week later he was playing Syd Barrett too.

YES! Syd, Roky Erickson and even Peter Green were all GORGEOUS when they were young, before mental illness and all the woes that accompany it dragged them on a downward spiral. With his brother's loving care, Roky has pulled himself together and now looks(and SOUNDS) BETTER than he has in YEARS(STILL has his head FULL of dark hair too)but sadly Peter and Syd never were able to make the recovery Roky did.

I recall arguing once with someone who HATED the Syd-era Floyd, and would only listen to their post-Atom Heart LPs. Hearing this song reminds me how advanced it was for pop music, as good as anything the Beatles did, filled with image and melody and the joy of sound. AND that 1st LP was even more advanced-- Syd: the light that burns twice as bright burns 1/2 as long.

I chose Emily, not only because it is one of his greatest songs but because in 2002 after he watched a documentary about himself, he commented about how it was good to hear Emily again, that was a good enough reason for me to use this song.
