Mine is very lightly modded and sounds a million times better than stock. Get one and do the Monte Allums mod and it's the cheapest pedal you'll ever truly love. I use mine as my main distortion because it is so smooth, yet it has a ton of gain. Think Marshall in a box sound.

This thing was built for 80s hair metal shred machine-age. Not the guff i was hearing out the amp - which is also ment for 80s hair metal shred machine-age. He succeeded in making boss and marshall look like complete tits.

I can assure you this pedal is awesome. this and a decent tube amp and your all set for that monster 80s tone.

Dude, i think you're confusing the 2. Ok, the Metal Core (ML-2) doesn't have a lot of variety, but it's one of the best sounding metal pedals on the market. If you think it sounds bad, maybe you should invest in a good amp or good guitar...

The Metal Zone on the other hand sounds harsh and extremely metallic. You can actually get a good sound from it, but it takes a lot of time and good equipment.

The ML-2's sound is too... empty. The sound is really generic and lacks any real creativity. The MT-2 can get everything from a good Mesa sound if you raise the mids and scoop them in the amp's EQ, or a good Laney sound by simply scooping the mids from the start.

I own both the sd-1 and the ts-9 (as well as some other OD pedals) and the answer is .... it depends. Generally speaking the TS9 is a little creamier. I use the TS9 to overdrive my Marshall and VHT, but to overdrive my Boogies, I prefer the DS1 or the Boss OS-2. I found on some amps the TS9 muddies / loosens up the bottom end.....

a TS-9 is going to sort of boost the mids and give you a very very clear signal with not a lot of chunk and crunch but a good amount of sustain and clarity. A sd-1 will give you a saturated sound with a smooth but crunchy sound. Try a mxr zakk wylde and gt-od. they get a lot of crunch and gain.
