You are speaking of Botflies which deposit larve on the skin which bores into the flesh. This causes painful open sores until they hatch and bore out. However, it doesn't lead to death.

Sores, possibly infection from bacteria as Botflies do create a tunnel system within the flesh. I think it takes 2 weeks for full pupate. Simple method of ridding them is to simply cover the hole with tape, therefore there is insufficient oxygen for the larvae to breathe within the spicales. Take some tweezers and pull it out if it tries to crawl out!
