I once read that Motherwell's elegies depict a schematic interpretation of when a bull is slain by a matador, they are castrated and their genitals are strung up on a wire fence. I don't know if this is actually what Motherwell had in mind, but I think its probably one of the most excellent metaphors for doom and tragedy I've ever heard of.
