Hopefully this will get rid of all speculation. I know the bridge operator and his family personally. He was sick and on multiple medications which severely altered his state of alertness. He was called in to work that day on forced overtime (work or you're fired). Some responsability does fall on the operator however a very large portion falls on the Seaway due to making him work in unfit conditions... The labor code now protects employees from unsafe work

This was the Windoc which was owned by Patterson note the large P on the stack.. anyway.. it was August 11, 2001 and the windoc was making its way down the welland canal. and the Bridge Operator was drunk and had taken pain killers. However an Amber light on the bridge showed the Captain of the Windoc , Captain Kent Strong that it was ok to pass under.. However, it was not so. When they asked the bridge operator why the bridge went down prematurely, he simply replied "I thought it had passed"

This was the Windoc, captain Kent Strong knew he had to flee the pilothouse when he saw the bridge coming down! There was an amber light on the bridge that showed the operator was aware of the ship coming. However the operator had 3 glasses of wine, pain killers, and a few beers that day, and he thought it was his day off!!. The guy supposed to work was sick. When they later interviewed the operator he simply said "I thought the ship had passed under the bridge already."
