I'm trying to get a Mac. Ever since one of my co workers showed me what that MBP could do I want one. (The only thing I have that is close to a computer right now is a PS3. Linux is awsome for it too. I highly recommend YDl or Fedora Linux on the PS3. ****ing sweet!)

Apple stole the scroll wheel thingy from bang & olufsen. I coouldn't find a link for the original Beocenter, but it had the scroll wheel (like beocenter2), and came out a long time before the ipod (granted its not an mp3 player, but a media center, its still stealing an idea). That is way worse than MS stealing from apple, bc B & O is a relatively tiny company, and people walk into their stores now, and say that they rip off of iPod.

I never said the zune was good. I do however say that iPod is the least capable player, and won the market share only b/c they had lots of money for advertising. iRiver released the h300 not too long after the original iPod was released. It is significatnly better, and even today, it is more capable than the newest iPod. With rockbox, it is even able to emulate gamboy and play m4a files. It has a full color screen, and plays videos, and even has a usb host and built in radio (cheaper too).
It's not just the advertising man, my I bought my iPod cause a friend recommended it to me cause it's very "crash resistant" in case of an accident (and what i mean with this is that even if the screen crashes it still working)and if you meant of disk space as the "least capable" look now at the 80gb iPod that one can be upgraded to 150gb with a flash memory.

Microsoft could learn something from Launchd: load services as they're required; free them when they're not. This means you only pay for what you use. It makes a big difference :).
Launchd allow different services to be started at certain times of the day, month or year etc. It can also reload a damaged service as required, all while resolving dependencies and making efficient use of system resources.

I hated Microsoft as a company well before I became a Mac user. I've lived on every side of the fence.
I ran BSD and Linux for a long time and that really opened my eyes. Microsoft make very poor software. As a developer that really offends me. I want to build on great software... Microsoft just doesn't offer me that.
Openoffice and iWorks are nice and could easily do the job... when the world manages to switch to open formats. Yes Microsoft do claim that they works for compatibility with other systems, but consider this:
They constantly change there proprietary formats because it hinders compatibility. They never add anything to there software. The new XDOC format adds nothings, then thats been the case for years. It forces people to buy their software over and over again.
there is no program that is nearly as powerful as Excel. The majority of users do not scratch the surface of its potential. The average user uses less than 5% of what it is capable of. There are companies that use excel and excel alone to do everything they need. When considering that WORD can have excel docs incorporated, id say thats pretty good.
Actually I think the main reason people like Apple is because they do a great job - loyalty comes with this. There products just work because they have a high degree of integration with the hardware. Consider this:
Around a year ago Apple integrated cameras into the majority of there computers, at the same time adding this to the OS. Now, if you have a camera, when you make a user account you can take a picture of the user etc. The OS can even cause a flash using the screen if needed.
Microsoft will never have this kind of cohesion between the OS and the hardware.
This is the real difference between Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft throw out outdated software products which sit over generic hardware and don't/can't provide anywhere near this level of functionality.
Integration is key, as they've noticed, leading to the XBox, XBox 360 and the ill fated Zune.
Thats not quite true, Microsoft could publish a specification detailing which parts they fully support etc. Then when you build a PC you get to choose whether you want that cohesion or not. This is a very simple solution, which will never happen.
Microsoft target only the more general hardware specification, the hardware companies are the ones which work to make there products compatible.
On a related note... I hope you all have 64-bit machines because Vista officially the last version of Windows for the desktop that will run on a 32-bit machine. Uh oh.
The point is that you save a little to begin with, but after constantly replacing parts your machine you end up costing more. There are 7 year old Macs running the latest OS etc. This makes it far more cost effective when you consider the relative difference in price.
I hope you realize, you can get a 64bit proc for less than 60 bux these days. An e6600 costs $200 with a MoBO at Fry's. You don't need anything special for VISTA unless you want to use the Aero interface. we have an imac at our school (one of the originals), and it won't print a paper w/o crashing. This happened after they installed a new OS on it. We have a 10 year old Laptop running XP, and the only reason we don;t upgrade to Vista is HDD space.
Lets face it the Aero interface is about the only major change in Vista, so why upgrade at all if you can't have it.
There are people who got PCs just a few years ago who can't run Vista. My friend Mike got a brand new PC a month before Vista and he's having to add more RAM, a new graphics card etc. He moved back to XP until it's done.
The fact is that around 95% of PC users will Have to get a new PC to run the next version of Windows. Thats a massive number of people.
I don't know what your school is doing to these Macs but I've had OS X crash 2 or 3 times in about 5 years. According to you you have a school full of iMacs that crash constantly. It sounds unlikely.
Right, so what is the sticker that says Windows Vista Ready for. They don't put that on certain hardware only for a reason. Vista had a built in driver for EVERYTHING on my computer. In fact, some of the microsoft drivers work BETTER than the drivers from the manufacturer.
In the end I think it comes down too how much you think having a system which works well with your hardware is worth. If you pay for shit you'll get shit.

It's exactly that we're forced into using such a second rate, piecemeal system on a daily basis that we dislike. With Apple we get highly modern*, well designed computers with no hassle, and an OS that fits like a glove. Whats not to like?
* Macs use the latest technology: no 40-odd year old BIOS, no hardware which has been outdated since the early 90s etc.
The only thing about the mac which is more "modern" (hardware wise) is the EFI system. Although EFi has some advantages over the BIOS, the BIOS still has advantages over EFI (think overclocking). Also, all modern Microsoft OS's support EFI, including XP. It's just that manufacturers have not implemented it. Not microsoft fault. Other than that, the technology in a PC is equal if not better than MAC's.
The only versions of Windows with support for EFI are those targeted at the Itanium platform.
The EFI firmware can contain a compatibility module that emulates BIOS when needed to load legacy systems like Windows. This is exactly how Boot Camp works.
The Pre-OS team in Vista did finally developed a BIOS independent architecture to support EFI, when it is available. Check it out.
So: DVI isn't more modern than the standard VGA? PCIe isn't more modern than the standard PCI. USB isn't more modern than PS/2 etc? Firewire 800, isn't more modern than the Firewire 400 you rarely see on PCs? Give me a break.
I have to say, overclocking a chip and running it above the safety-level determined by engineers is one of the dumbest ideas in the world, and has lead to damage to more than a few chips I hasten to add.
Do you live under a rock? PC's have DVI (i have dual DVI), PC's have PCIe. between 2 and 6 depending on the MoBo. Any PC without USB has got to be more than 8 yrs old. Firewrie 400 is on PC's, but i do not see many devices that even use firewire anymore. eSATA is MUCH faster, and most all current devices that use firewire also support eSATA. I have 2 firewire ports which i have NEVER used. does ur MAC have eSATA, i think not.
You can get the hardware for PCs, my point was that you don't! These things are in no way standard, instead you fall back onto cheaper legacy hardware.
What I was saying about PS/2 is that it's still included even though it's been outdates for over 10 years. There is no reason for it.
Look at what eSATA doesn't do. It doesn't supply power and only supports 1 dev per channel. Firewire 800 is half the speed On Paper but it powers the dev, has a much greater range and can support 63.
firewire still has a lot less products usin it. Also, the price to build a comp with all that stuff is about the same price as a mac (if you buy a prebuilt form DELL or something), and much cheaper if you build urself.
I'll submit that the equivalent prebuilt PC actually costs a little more in most cases, however I have no doubt you can built it yourself for less. Then the final cost depends on how much your time is worth, if you have deadlines as such your it's probably worth far more than the difference.
LOL. Perhaps this could be a contributing factor to the generally low quality of PC builds. Get a trained engineer to design you a computer and see what they come up with... or just look at what Apples engineers have done ;). Notice that they wont overclock the hardware etc.

Many processors are manufactured on a single platter then each chip is stress tested and the appropriate speed selected. The higher quality chips are set up for higher frequencies and end up costing more.
By overclocking you ignore this process entirely and pushing the chips harder than was deemed safe.
Overclocking can easily damage the chip and or reduce the life of the computer! I guess you'll counter that by saying you can get another and act like that somehow makes it a good idea.
I didn't say that you make bad computers, just that the design quality of PCs is generally low. Most people don't do any design work, they just start building.
I'm far more confident that a team of engineers know how to properly balance heat production and other factors better than I...

sorry, my bad, i meant 5 times the speed (actually more like 3.5 - 5 times depending on proc) The netburst architecture was designed to run between 5 and 10ghz, but never reached those speeds due to thermal constraints. Intel was able to OC one of their conroes to 6ghz with nitrogen cooling (stable).
OC ro 3ghz won't do damage, as long as you keep it cool.

What you may be missing is that Ghz are a very poor measure of speed. That quest is over, what we want is to increase processor power while reducing power consumption. Just the opposite of OC.
You can do this by have a lots of cores and a lower clock speed... but then the software needs to be able to work with the hardware for the speed increase. This a harder problem, bad news for Windows users.
Linux installs without problems in minutes and you'll never need CDs again, and what's sweet is that you'll never need money either! Today's Linux installations far exceed in performance, looks and compatibility to anything microsoft can't even dream, and it's free!

Apple stole the scroll wheel thingy from bang & olufsen. I coouldn't find a link for the original Beocenter, but it had the scroll wheel (like beocenter2), and came out a long time before the ipod (granted its not an mp3 player, but a media center, its still stealing an idea). That is way worse than MS stealing from apple, bc B & O is a relatively tiny company, and people walk into their stores now, and say that they rip off of iPod.

Even with all the marketing, iPod would have gone nowhere w/o the scroll wheel thing. Apple users are not switching to vista re they? no. Users of many other jukbox's switched to the iPod. Besides, in 1997 i believe a cross patent thing was a part of the deal. So they arent violating anything are they? Even if they are, y doesn't apple sue them?

Do Mac OS X has something bad made?, i guess just a couple of things, but i guess you will say "games and software", well you certainly be right with the game thing cause apple focus on the most rentable market, gamers has 10% of the gadgets market share, a mac is an everyday computer, and excelent for developers but the software thing, is false! that was a problem with OS 9.

I never said the zune was good. I do however say that iPod is the least capable player, and won the market share only b/c they had lots of money for advertising. iRiver released the h300 not too long after the original iPod was released. It is significatnly better, and even today, it is more capable than the newest iPod. With rockbox, it is even able to emulate gamboy and play m4a files. It has a full color screen, and plays videos, and even has a usb host and built in radio (cheaper too).

It's not just the advertising man, my I bought my iPod cause a friend recommended it to me cause it's very "crash resistant" in case of an accident (and what i mean with this is that even if the screen crashes it still working)and if you meant of disk space as the "least capable" look now at the 80gb iPod that one can be upgraded to 150gb with a flash memory.

My sister is an iPod lover, and she has gone thru about 3 iPods during the lifetime of my iriver h340. Each one had a life ending problem for no reason (hdd head crash while still on a counter) (file system corrupts and even apple employee's can't fix it). BULLSHIT.

Microsoft could learn something from Launchd: load services as they're required; free them when they're not. This means you only pay for what you use. It makes a big difference :).
Launchd allow different services to be started at certain times of the day, month or year etc. It can also reload a damaged service as required, all while resolving dependencies and making efficient use of system resources.
Very cool solution to a lot of problems.

Apple had $450 million spare with which to buy NeXT Computer Inc. and all it's assets, yet they needed a relatively small handout from Microsoft to stay alive? Doesn't make all that much sense does it.
Actually, what Apple got from that deal was a promise to maintain Microsoft Office for the Mac. Which Microsoft makes a killing on anyway, so it was hardly selfless.
In return Microsoft was given access to Apples proprietary technologies, which you WinPC fanboys enjoy today. A little gratitude?

I ran BSD and Linux for a long time and that really opened my eyes. Microsoft make very poor software. As a developer that really offends me. I want to build on great software... Microsoft just doesn't offer me that.

Openoffice and iWorks are nice and could easily do the job... when the world manages to switch to open formats. Yes Microsoft do claim that they works for compatibility with other systems, but consider this:
They constantly change there proprietary formats because it hinders compatibility. They never add anything to there software. The new XDOC format adds nothings, then thats been the case for years. It forces people to buy their software over and over again.

there is no program that is nearly as powerful as Excel. The majority of users do not scratch the surface of its potential. The average user uses less than 5% of what it is capable of. There are companies that use excel and excel alone to do everything they need. When considering that WORD can have excel docs incorporated, id say thats pretty good.

Actually I think the main reason people like Apple is because they do a great job - loyalty comes with this. There products just work because they have a high degree of integration with the hardware. Consider this:
Around a year ago Apple integrated cameras into the majority of there computers, at the same time adding this to the OS. Now, if you have a camera, when you make a user account you can take a picture of the user etc. The OS can even cause a flash using the screen if needed.

This is the real difference between Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft throw out outdated software products which sit over generic hardware and don't/can't provide anywhere near this level of functionality.
Integration is key, as they've noticed, leading to the XBox, XBox 360 and the ill fated Zune.

Thats not quite true, Microsoft could publish a specification detailing which parts they fully support etc. Then when you build a PC you get to choose whether you want that cohesion or not. This is a very simple solution, which will never happen.
Microsoft target only the more general hardware specification, the hardware companies are the ones which work to make there products compatible.

On a related note... I hope you all have 64-bit machines because Vista officially the last version of Windows for the desktop that will run on a 32-bit machine. Uh oh.
The point is that you save a little to begin with, but after constantly replacing parts your machine you end up costing more. There are 7 year old Macs running the latest OS etc. This makes it far more cost effective when you consider the relative difference in price.

I hope you realize, you can get a 64bit proc for less than 60 bux these days. An e6600 costs $200 with a MoBO at Fry's. You don't need anything special for VISTA unless you want to use the Aero interface. we have an imac at our school (one of the originals), and it won't print a paper w/o crashing. This happened after they installed a new OS on it. We have a 10 year old Laptop running XP, and the only reason we don;t upgrade to Vista is HDD space.

Lets face it the Aero interface is about the only major change in Vista, so why upgrade at all if you can't have it.
There are people who got PCs just a few years ago who can't run Vista. My friend Mike got a brand new PC a month before Vista and he's having to add more RAM, a new graphics card etc. He moved back to XP until it's done.
The fact is that around 95% of PC users will Have to get a new PC to run the next version of Windows. Thats a massive number of people.

Right, so what is the sticker that says Windows Vista Ready for. They don't put that on certain hardware only for a reason. Vista had a built in driver for EVERYTHING on my computer. In fact, some of the microsoft drivers work BETTER than the drivers from the manufacturer.

It's exactly that we're forced into using such a second rate, piecemeal system on a daily basis that we dislike. With Apple we get highly modern*, well designed computers with no hassle, and an OS that fits like a glove. Whats not to like?
* Macs use the latest technology: no 40-odd year old BIOS, no hardware which has been outdated since the early 90s etc.

The only thing about the mac which is more "modern" (hardware wise) is the EFI system. Although EFi has some advantages over the BIOS, the BIOS still has advantages over EFI (think overclocking). Also, all modern Microsoft OS's support EFI, including XP. It's just that manufacturers have not implemented it. Not microsoft fault. Other than that, the technology in a PC is equal if not better than MAC's.

The only versions of Windows with support for EFI are those targeted at the Itanium platform.
The EFI firmware can contain a compatibility module that emulates BIOS when needed to load legacy systems like Windows. This is exactly how Boot Camp works.
The Pre-OS team in Vista did finally developed a BIOS independent architecture to support EFI, when it is available. Check it out.

I have to say, overclocking a chip and running it above the safety-level determined by engineers is one of the dumbest ideas in the world, and has lead to damage to more than a few chips I hasten to add.

Do you live under a rock? PC's have DVI (i have dual DVI), PC's have PCIe. between 2 and 6 depending on the MoBo. Any PC without USB has got to be more than 8 yrs old. Firewrie 400 is on PC's, but i do not see many devices that even use firewire anymore. eSATA is MUCH faster, and most all current devices that use firewire also support eSATA. I have 2 firewire ports which i have NEVER used. does ur MAC have eSATA, i think not.

You can get the hardware for PCs, my point was that you don't! These things are in no way standard, instead you fall back onto cheaper legacy hardware.
What I was saying about PS/2 is that it's still included even though it's been outdates for over 10 years. There is no reason for it.
Look at what eSATA doesn't do. It doesn't supply power and only supports 1 dev per channel. Firewire 800 is half the speed On Paper but it powers the dev, has a much greater range and can support 63.

firewire still has a lot less products usin it. Also, the price to build a comp with all that stuff is about the same price as a mac (if you buy a prebuilt form DELL or something), and much cheaper if you build urself.

I'll submit that the equivalent prebuilt PC actually costs a little more in most cases, however I have no doubt you can built it yourself for less. Then the final cost depends on how much your time is worth, if you have deadlines as such your it's probably worth far more than the difference.

LOL. Perhaps this could be a contributing factor to the generally low quality of PC builds. Get a trained engineer to design you a computer and see what they come up with... or just look at what Apples engineers have done ;). Notice that they wont overclock the hardware etc.

They're not designed to run 10x there current speed!
Many processors are manufactured on a single platter then each chip is stress tested and the appropriate speed selected. The higher quality chips are set up for higher frequencies and end up costing more.

sorry, my bad, i meant 5 times the speed (actually more like 3.5 - 5 times depending on proc) The netburst architecture was designed to run between 5 and 10ghz, but never reached those speeds due to thermal constraints. Intel was able to OC one of their conroes to 6ghz with nitrogen cooling (stable).
OC ro 3ghz won't do damage, as long as you keep it cool.

What you may be missing is that Ghz are a very poor measure of speed. That quest is over, what we want is to increase processor power while reducing power consumption. Just the opposite of OC.
You can do this by have a lots of cores and a lower clock speed... but then the software needs to be able to work with the hardware for the speed increase. This a harder problem, bad news for Windows users.

a) Without MS Apple would have market domination today. It takes time to correct this. In about 5 years from now the IT world will look a lot different.
b) Mac Users are grown ups, we don't need games to play. If we have too much aggression, we just take a look at the wonderful UI of OS X and everything is fine again. And if we are bored we just meet with friends (friends are those people you don't have). Computing isn't just about gaming, but maybe you'll se this if you are older than 13, kid.

Also, the majority of Mac Users are children, how to I know this? Cause I am a TA (teachers assistant) at a local cyber school, and we, and almost every other cyber school supply our students with iMacs. How do you justify branding me "kid"? I assume you mean PC=Windows, so:
a) Being safe from Viruses
b) Having a beutiful OS
c) You can easily install even Windoze and Linux
d) By having preselected Hardware, Macs run more stable.
e) Much better "out of the box" experience (i.e. iLife)

If you Mac lovers would just know your computer history, you would know that Bill Gates wrote B.A.S.I.C. (Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) of which Apple used the major part for it's Lisa, which had the first GUI (Graphical User Interface).
So, that's the first time Apple has stolen from Microsoft.

Bill Gates only helped put BASIC on the majority of computers in the early 80s. To tell you the truth, I think it's about time for BASIC to make a comeback. Some of the best programmers started on that language.

Microsoft and Windows is much better then Apple and Macintosh. Apple attacks PC's and Microsoft as much as they can but Microsoft seems to stand unaffected. If you ask me.. I think Windows is the best although I haven't tried Linux yet...

Take a look at UAC (user has limited rights, and gets admin right after a prompt).. that sound damn much like the unix/linux "sudo" method. Or lets take a look at networking. The first OS that supported networking was unix, even windows 95 had poor networking features.
But I am shure Mr. pocketboy has a pretty good answer to that (or maybe he'll never come back again...)
