  • I can't wait to get my own supplies and start painting my own horses. Thank you for the help!

  • Are these Breyers?

  • Good video. I'm going to get starting in painting horse models. Thanks for posting.

  • were do you live

  • i am totally with you on the pastel vs. airbrushing thing... i feel like i have a lot more control over the colors when using pastel, despite it being more time consuming.

  • what color is the silver model? I really like it :P

  • @laddybug324 He's buckskin. He came in a set with a book.

  • @SaturnineStudios

Oh I want one like him... :P

  • Where do I find white primer?

  • whats primer for?

  • @BreyerGirl25 It gives the paint/pastels a white clean surface to stick to.

  • Do you ever use spray Gesso for primer? It's worked quite well for a number of mine.

  • @FilmerOfBobcats I haven't used it but I've heard it works well.

  • wow those are really good would u every be willing to sell the one in the silver mold?

  • Can u do one on re-positioning

  • my first custom was a stable mate

  • Would this work for schliech horses too? (Sorry if I spelt it wrong)

  • @1997HighLander It would except I had a problem with my primer and the Schliech horses. I didn't use a rubber primer and the horse stayed sticky. Another Schliech horse I did though was perfectly fine, I think because I used a different primer because I was out of the kind I normally use.

  • Do you put on the pasteling right before the matte coating?

  • @breyerismythang223 Do a layer of pastels, then matte, then pastels and keep repeating until you're done.

  • Awesome! Thanks so much! I finished pasteling this awesome (in my opinion) stablemate today, thanks to your instructions! :)

  • can the modle have color on it??

  • @MrThunderhead9 For pastelling it can't. It needs to have a white basecoat.

  • @BreyerGals678 If it were me I'd use a 'Paint-It-Yourself' horse. :D

  • How much would the primer and fixative cost at a craft store??

I was thinking of getting back into custom models, however my primer is old and crappy haha

  • Thanks so much! this is one of the best tutorials on youtube!!!! i'm guna give it a shot! do u recomend using a old breyer or a paint it your self breyer?

  • @BreyerGals678 you can use whatever you want, it doesn't matter. I recommend older models and stablemates because they're cheaper and you don't have to worry about accidentally messing up a $40 traditional model.

  • i have a krylon indoor and outdoor white spray will it work? i read the back of it it didnt say it could be used for plastic. but will it work?

  • @modelhorsecollector1 Are you planning on using it as a primer? White paint isn't the same as primer and sometimes doesn't work. Primer has something in it that causes it to stick to a surface better than paint and also allows paint to stick to it as well. White paint isn't a primer and sometimes it can flake off the surface or other paints won't stick and will also flake off. It might work fine but I'd stick with using a primer just to be safe.

  • my parents think im good at painting so they buy me painting by numbers even though im actually CRAP! :(

  • How old were you when you started painting and how long have you been painting? :)

  • @alinanazarenko1 I started in high school and have been painting probably 7 years now.

  • Aww man.I can't paint at all.

  • i took a simple turial model and put about 3 layers of white paint on it to cover the old coat color... could i use the pastel way ontop the white pait?

  • what coat color do you recommend for somebody's first custom?

  • could i use gesso for the primer??? please reply back!!

  • @BreyerBox I've never used it but I've heard it works. The only problem is if you brush it on you have to worry about leaving brushstrokes.

  • @SaturnineStudios ok, thanks i found gesso spray paint so that'll work thx!!

  • @BreyerBox yes! now i know what gesso is! i hae a big can of it in my basement... thank you!

  • @frenchtoastcrazy1 hahaha, no prob :) glad i helped, i envy that you have it and i dont :( hahaha :D

  • what do you use in between the lyers and what spray do you use to finsh it do you use the same thing

  • @goofyrocks1 I use Krylon Matte finish between layers and when I'm done spray 2 or 3 layers to protect the paintjob.

  • what type of paint do you usse between each coat and do you have to do that

  • @allthelovelybadones I use Krylon matte finish. If you don't use it you won't be able to do many layers. It seals the pastels and allows for more to be added.

  • The matrix custom is beautiful!

  • what brand of pastels do you use? and what about markings?

  • @JumperPrincess105 I use Alphacolor Earthtones set and just white acrylic paint for the markings.

  • what is an easy way to stip a model?

  • @BreyerLoverforLife I've never stripped the paint off of a horse but I've heard of people using nail polish remover or an oven cleaning product called Easy Off.

  • @SaturnineStudios yah like i need to get old and chiped primer off but thanks anyway!

  • @sweenbean16 No, they shave off int chunks and the oil probably wouldn't react well with the sprays.

  • I finally started pasteling but its not working right, in your videos it looks smooth but mine looks freckeled and blotchy. Im using everything your using exept the same brushes, but i use q tips and nothings different it seems like its working for everyone but me.help me. What am i doing wrong???

  • Kinda like u do a face up on a ball jointet doll ?

  • Do you know a specific store to get the pastels?

  • @Elleloveshorses1 Crafts stores don't carry the Alphacolor kind, you usually have to go to art stores.

  • @SaturnineStudios thanks!

  • thank you

  • hi... um.. yeah i was wondering if i should find out wat breed the horse is modeling and then see what colors that breed is or does it not matter?? please let me know^_^ oh and one more thing after you spray the pastels do they change color at all or stay the same?? bye #_#

  • @supdood2 If you're going for accuracy and plan on showing your horse at a model horse show it really helps to know your breeds and colors.

The color gets a little richer when you spray but that's a good thing.

  • what grain sandpaper and what kind of file are you using?

  • @NaoKitsune I use a bunch of different sandpaper grains but around 220 is what I use the most. The files I use are just a small kit with a bunch of different kinds, you could probably find them at a hardware store.

  • THANK YOU for showing this!!! this will help me a HOLE lot!!! =D

  • after every layer of pastelles you put on that spray. How long do you leave it on for and inside or ourside?

  • where did you get so many horses?

  • lol im doing the exact same horse for my first custom in pastels.

is there a substitute for primer?? theyre out of white at the store... :\

  • @KoolwHip315 No, the primer ensures that your paint/pastel job will stick and not flake off the horse.

  • with the mat fish do u have to wait for 15 min each coat

  • @greenhillstables Yeah, I wait around that long.

  • the matte finish, is tht like the colour that you will make the horse or is it clear?

  • Its clear.

  • i've done 1 painted custum and two repositioning its cool, much better than having t put up with breyers blemishes, no affence to breyer, i am now painting with spray paints, but have yet to see how it turns out, also i have done tones of etching, but my tool was rubbish and left loads so i bought a knife set and coz they are VERY sharp they got of all the paint but took a chunk outta woody lol, great vid

  • i pastel! i never tryed painting because brush stokes are deadly!

I agree, pasteling is the way to go!

  • Ha! I use nailpolish to gloss the eyes too!

  • I really like your file set. I've looked online and can't seem to find anything similar. Where did you get them?

  • They were among some tools I got from my grandfather so I'm not sure where they're from. I would assume tools stores might have them but I'm not sure.

  • @SaturnineStudios I got a set like that at a hardware store. They come in different sizes and shapes with a handle that accepts any of them. They're very useful, as are dental tools!

  • is primer the same as the fixitive stuff?

  • hey i have a question is there a difference between matte spray and finnish???i dont think there is but wanna make sure...

  • No its the same. =)

  • ok thanks im going to the store today to get the stuff :)

  • could you just use white paint

  • No, the primer is a special type of paint that sticks to surfaces better than normal paint and will make sure your paintjob doesn't peel off.

  • why do you need primers

  • To cover the horse's original paint and give the new paint a surface to stick to.

  • I noticed in one of your other videos that you had a completely white breyer. I was wondering if you somehow bleached it or if it came that way. if you bought it like that please tell me where! im a new colector and i really whant to get artistic with my breyers.

  • The horse is a regular Breyer sprayed with a white primer so it can be painted.

  • Awesome! I just put a first coat of primer on my first pastel custom, a stock horse stablemate mare.

  • Hi i have a breyer that is sratched and rubbed so i was wondering what kind of paint do i use ?

The breed will be a paint so i dont need too much i was just wondering (:

  • Acrylics would work fine, especially for paint horses.

  • Thanks

is there a really good brand i should use ?

  • I just use cheap 2OZ tubes from the craft store and they've worked really well so far.

  • Does the paint come off in water ? do i have to put something on to stop that ?

  • It shouldn't but spraying the horse in Krylon matte finish will seal the paint completely.

  • where do you get the sprays and what are they called?

  • Krylon Matte finish and any kind of white spray primer. They're found at most craft stores.

  • I dont need paint for markings cus i use tape that wont come off when i pastell and matte over it then when the model is almost done i take the tape off and matte over the model 1 or 2 more times so that it all blends in together. u might want to try it some time. and do u no how to do dapples(soor for the poor language i taxt wayy 2 much)

  • I've used tape to mask off areas before, its a great trick.

Dapples are hard, I'm still trying to master them. One way to do them is to pastel the horse and before you seal it use a kneaded eraser (they're rubber erasers that you can shape) make it into a point and lift out the dust to create light circles. Its time consuming but its the best method I've tried.

  • tape workes good and it is a great trick but ill definitely try the dapple thing and another methond ove tried is if you take a rounded sponge in the size of the dapples you want u can seen to make it lighter. u have to wash the sponge often but it only workes when your painting with acryics.

  • what kind of pastels do u use. and is grey included in the pack. my pastels dont work well and they make shavings instead of pwder.

  • It sounds like you have oil pastels which won't work at all. Get the soft chalk kind.

  • ya i tried but all it does is stick and since i just primed my model with quick dry primer he is dry but hes old and i sanded him with the dremel so it didnt take long but i tell you now i will never use oil pastels again.

  • was this with pastels?

  • u dont have to start on a stable mate i started on a traditinol adn it looks awsome it was a tread pony

  • hi. i primed a model and did the same thing you did with the pastels and the pasetels wont stick to my model..what do you tink i am doing wrong? bc i did the same thing u did in this video except i have a different primer

  • It takes a couple coats before the color really shows. If that doesn't work spray the horse with matte after you prime and before yo start pastelling.

  • k thx wat is matte?

  • Its a spray sealant that isn't glossy.

  • oiikay

  • Are chalk pastels the same thing as soft ones?

  • Ys, just as long as they aren't oil ones.

  • Where do you by the pastels and the spraystuf?

  • Art and craft stores usually.

  • good tuttorial!

  • Would it be possible to do like paints and appy's like this?

  • Yes, I usually pastel the model and then add markings with white acrylic paint.

  • oh my bad, lol

  • I looked at your website and wondered, Did you seriously mold some of those horses!

  • I don't mold them, they're just Breyers. I do sometimes resculpt parts on them.

  • sry I'm asking so many questions but, looking more closely at him after those 2 layers of pastels, he's kinda dusty and not really smooth. I don't really know what to do because I'm afraid of wiping away all of it. How do you do it!?

  • That's fine. =) Is the finish sort of grainy? Unfortunately this is a problem that pastel painters have a lot. I've found since I made this tutorial that making sure the primer is smooth and using Krylon Crystal clear between the pastel and matte layers helps eliminate it a little bit.

  • I just started pasteling and I'm trying to make him look like a buckskin. I only have to yellow layers on him and he hardly looks like it. how many layers do you usually put on a horse?

  • Comment removed

  • can you make an appaloosa with pastels? well I'm sure you can but isn't there a certain technique?

  • One more thing for when u see both these questions. when did u start, did you have a lot of problems in the beginning? it would just make me feel better lol, mine are not turning out well, because theyre my first 2. thanx if u respond

  • I had trouble at first too, my first horse has so many mistakes. Usually it takes a while for me to get a color correctly. I've been painting in pastels for almost three years and I still feel like such a beginner.

  • ok sry for all the dumbass questions but I just sprayed my primer on but I didn't spray it right. I first sprayed it too close so there was a lot, then it spattered some paint to. so is it ok to sand it and then spray another layer to hide it?

  • Comment removed

  • Wait sry I have clear Acrylic Sealer MATTE is this ok?

  • Probably, I'd test it on another surface before using it on a horse.

  • Comment removed

  • where can u get the pastels?

  • ok my friend messed up my breyer by painting it and i was wondering if i could send it to u to pastel it ? just wondering if u did that.....

  • My dad use too paint cars, so he should have primar and paint! 8D

  • how much is the matte finish spray?! thanks! you acted like a true awsome teacher in the model horse world!

  • I've seen it priced between $6 - $9.

    Thanks!

  • okay, good! pretty cheap!

    your welcome!!

  • omg this is so helpful!! im gonna try it!!

  • WOW, very helpful, thank you I have a clumsy hand so i will start with a classic breyer, not a stablemate, i tried it once it didnt work lol

  • how much does a air brush cost???? and i have a secret on how to get scraches just scraches of of already painted horses if u want to know just ask.

  • around 350$

i have euros and i got mine for 200 euros

  • do u know were i can get matte finnish or someting like dat? i live in ireland and breyers are'nt that popular

  • ebay or most art and craft shops sell them :) and some tack stores

  • I got a pretty nice air brush for around $25 it was a good deal. :)

  • how???

  • like varnish ?

  • how can i pastel a dark bay?

  • Start with the lightest color and slowly build up to a dark brown. Use a lot of black.

  • can you please make a video of how to air brush a breyer?thanks.

  • I'm hoping to when I get better at airbrushing.

  • ok because i have an airbrush and im preaty good at other stuff just not models.thanks

  • I want tto try an airbrush... but which one did you get/suggest?

  • I have a Paasche Double Action. It took some getting used to but it works really well.

  • How much was it?

  • I think around $50, I'm not sure really.

  • My hands are freakin huge . And I tried to paint a stablmate . LOL Next day the paint was falling off!!

  • wow your amazing when you see them all you really helped i well im using a trad foal will that be ok?

  • Thank you sooooooooo much!!! I just started sanding 1 of my breyer models yesterday(plus, it's a classic too) and I hope it turns out good!

  • Comment removed

  • So... I can probably get almost all of the supplies at a local art/craft store.. right?

    Beautiful, anyways. :)

  • wow, you are so amazing. i never saw anything like this. amazing!!

  • erm...just a few questions I would like to ask:

Is Primer just white paint with a weird name

and is matte finish cleard spar-on stuff??

  • Primer is a special paint used as a base coat to enable paint to stick to a surface. It comes in other colors besides white but I prefer using the white kind. The matte is a clear finish used to seal things without making them glossy and allow more layers of paint/pastels to stick to a surface.

  • it's actully clear

  • you could also just paint the whole horse in oil pastel then put a that stuff on it to seal it. right?

  • could i use auto primer?

  • I'm not sure, it might work.

  • yea ummm.... i messed up doing a custom that my dad would get really mad about cause its trad. clysedale and i removed all the paint do u have any suggestions on how to fix it?

  • If the paint is removed just prime it again and start over.

  • OK um... were can i find matte finish????

  • you can get it at most craft stores

  • matte whodawhat???

  • wow how lond does it take you do just one stablemate cause i want to try also how much do u think all the stuff will cost?

  • wow!! sooooo cool i am so trying thT!

  • walmart no sell breyers no more....

  • Oil pastels don't work at all (I've tried). Chalk are the only kind to use.
