  • Una ejemplar version, para las futuras generaciones, en la version de uno de los mas destacados intérpretes de la guitarra en este momento.

  • I have to love his panache and romanticism. He has loads of technique but he doesn't let it dominate his musical sensiblilities. I think he's just tremendous. He also seems to be a really warm and pleasant individual in the interviews I've seen. I understand he was a huge Django Reinhardt fan in his youth and it shows big time.

  • super talented guitarist. he is the best of the best.no one can compete with it.i adore him.the nine persons who dislike his playing in this video, do not understand the music. they must not make any comment to any guitarist.

  • I am not qualified to say who is the greatest guitarist, but I can say that no one sounds as good to my ears as Julian Bream

  • @Michajeru i agree

  • He is so right about the guitar. Truly a well rounded musician and brilliant guitarist to be admired.

  • Ahh, maestro Bream. You have ruined this piece for me as I can not listen to any other version than yours....perfection.

  • donde puedo donseguir la partitura que alguin me diga por faaaaaaaa.........

  • My maestro......great!!!

  • @ewusie very well said.

  • Julian Bream = Genius.

  • I write this because it's not enough to say I like this piece or him in general. Bream is to be venerated.

  • Great master!!

  • Bream playing Tarrega, some of the finest music you will ever hear.

  • Why ruin a great performance with talking? Here's a hint: NEVER talk over music. Do that either before or after,

  • From 0:38-0:50 I half expected the background to start moving and Bream suddenly starts floating in the air. XD What genius character

  • The ultimate interpretation of this piece.

  • The J Williams, the Barruecos, the Russells, and all the others just miss the greatest guitarist in History. Still a chance, Mr Bream still alive! Please go and learn how to do Music in the guitar, hurry up.....

  • nice piece..havent heard this one before -just learned it from this clip..(very melodic and easy to learn and play) thanks for posting it!

  • 2:10

  • thats enjoy the music =) look his face

  • I've always loved Bream's face expressions that show how much he enjoys playing his guitar. It's like he's dancing with a beautiful woman..

  • @amnaki Are you trying to say something smarty pants

  • Действительно, Таррега...

  • this dude is INCREDIBLE : ]

  • the rare combination of masterful technique with extraordinary feel.

  • qu'est-ce qui dit?

  • i wish this style in playing would come back. Nowdays is just technical crap. The music is second to the technique. There is a demise in the guitar now. If you dont believe me type in Yamashita and just look at what people are listening to!

  • @sir1920 ??

  • A great master.. also his voice frightened me a smidge when it came in so abruptly

  • nice

  • very nicely interpreted!!

  • este tio es un marciano...

    ¿como puede tocar asi?

se saltan las lagrimas al oir esto

  • Has anyone ever noticed that his left hand 3rd finger looks weird? Kind of clubbed and flat? Has there ever been any discussion anywhere about it? It looks like he uses the pad instead of the tip.

  • @smoothie66 Yes, most peoples noticed. But if you look at his younger vid, he uses finger tip (text book style). I guess when he gets older he decided to play in a more "relax" same as Segovia..the string noise driving me crazy at time.

  • Is Bream the Steve Vai of classical guitar, or Steve Vai the Bream of electric guitar?

  • @otharennaur they are both bad A's in their genre.

  • one of the greatest players id like to see slash play music like this classical guitar is the most affluent and complex music for the guitar

  • smooth is all u need to know

  • Comment removed

  • The colors of the guitar, that Bream can achieve, (especially on this composition), are ones that no one till now, and probably for a much longer time, can achieve.

This is the best version of this composition, it is very sad that you can't actually hear the whole melody.

  • Best guitarist ever.

  • @ScouseFolky I assume you're white. Most racists are. It would be easy to conclude from this fact that whites are less intelligent and more prone to bigotry than other races. (I'm white, btw.) If I were as stupid as the average racist, I probably would draw this absurd conclusion, rather than look at other more likely factors to explain this sad fact.

  • @davehshs

"I assume you're white. Most racists are."

Good news: you are not as stupid as the average racist. Bad news: you're just stupid.

  • The most amazing shit ever. i looove it

  • all these li jie or w/e fans... fucking bream.

  • esecuzione superlativa,grazie camofox

  • Brilliant interpretation, always musical, and very informative too, for all the up and coming 'wannabe's!

Just delightful really, with the backcloth of the Sierra Nevada adding to the atmosphere.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • for expression he was such a master!

  • I wonder if he sits on a wall at Alhambra - sure looks like it.

  • That's how a guitar is supposed to sound.

  • That's harsh kumi, you are comparing an old master to a 14 year old.

I bet Li Jie takes a hot steamy diarrhea on your version.

  • kumitetom, Bream would be very much embarrassed by your comment, you owe him an apology.

  • her version is to differint to compare

  • Incredibly disrespectful. You have embarassed yourself in the eyes of thousands.

  • Grow up kid.

  • Whe I watch this video two thoughts go trhough my mind.

    1. What an awesome musician whose playing is a constant inspiration

    2. Jesus he must be hot wearing a suit and tie in the sun like that

  • the brits conquered the world wearing ties, why wouldn't he?

    don't spam me, its a joke, I <3 GB, I truly do.

  • What great guitarist duo's !!!

  • ole!

    muy muy bueno

  • man i love his playing,

  • in interpretation ,there is no similar ...

  • well, h a v e you heard both ? who gives the spanish f e e l i n g better ?

Bream is no doubt T H E guitar master!!

  • shut the fuck up both of you and enjoy the amazing music.

  • PWNED!

  • bream it's the best player for plays classics composers like sor, aguado, carulli etc etc and the best for the spain composers like grandos turina tarrega malats

  • beautiful!!

  • mamadas...

  • Comment removed

  • in a way i guess..

when he plays its the music you hear at its purest form, like... an orchestra in a way...

  • like this is the way this music is supposed to be played... rather unfortunate that I'm looking to be a guitarist as well. Kind of this great icon to look up to but at the same time I can never see myself above julian bream. Just saying that is blasphemy in itself.

  • very true.. but then again... before bream there were always people better then him, gotta realize at one point.. he started at nothing...

    so never lose hope

  • What a pity they put the comments while he's performing! Here JBream is simply magnificent!

  • If you liked this, definitely get the Guitarra! DVD by Bream (in fact this is from the DVD) 3 straight hours of Spanish guitar heaven.

  • bream is so good, prob my fav classical guitarist,

  • The master of interpretation!

  • haha what a consistently engaging and exciting interpretation

  • haha, doctorate in music at harvard eh? You think they study motorhead and dimebag at harvard? Fucking idiot georgetoheat. You will never play anything that is a fraction of julian bream's playing, in a billion lifetimes.

  • Don't feed the troll; it's just some idiot Aussie with the brain of a kangaroo.

  • God, what talent! Hearing him play this piece, you'd never now it was intended for piano. The slides, vibrati and trills he uses cuold never be done on a piano. Well maybe the trills but not the glisandi and the vibrati. I love it!

  • Tarrega comes to life when Bream plays his music. That is the way that Tarrega probably wanted his pieces to sound like.

  • Yes. But this piece is by Malats. The arrangement, true is by Tarrega.

  • I'm not sure about Barrios being better then Segovia because he composed. True Segovia didn't write much music but he did compose and he created many studies and technical exercises played daily my many players globally. He also transcribed an astounding number of works and undoubtedly without him and even more so Tarrega, guitar would not have the following it does today and definately would not have the repoirtoire

  • @christianos666 Who done more tfor the guitar doesn't necessarily mean the person is better. I think it's safe to say nobody done more for the guitar than Segovia, so for that he has my respect. Musically though, I don't like him that much, whereas I much prefer Julian Bream.

  • I like watching Bream. His movements and facial expression add something to the flavor of the piece. You don't feel like you are watching somebody pull their pant down like you do when watching Andre Watts or Lang Lang or other agonyandecstasy exhibitonists.

  • Couldn't they have waited until the playing was finished to run the interview segments and the voice-over?

  • That has bugged me hugely as well. The music is great enough that I watch it regularly anyway though.

  • THE COLORS!

  • what can say i wish i could play like that

  • he's always got the dynamics SPOT ON. I am unbearably jealous.

  • Precioso tema...

  • Never mind with Bream's face expersions, Just listen to him. The man is a genius! I think he would never feel in the mood to play Barrios.I cannot even imagine such a scene: Barrios is artificial, superfluos. Just good for a warm up!

  • barrios is wonderfull

just bucause you cant give to his pieces the real mean and beauty

try to play barrios with soul

  • When Segovia first meet Barrios and listened to him, he almost felt of his chair about Barrios playing. He couldn't believe that there is someone who plays equal or better than him, and also was a composer. You know, Segovia and Bream are under Barrios, for the simple fact that Barrios played better than both, and also compose music that was new in harmony meanings. He is near to Francisco Tárrega in greatness for the guitar!

  • Dream , my friend, dream! If it makes you feel better, have a nice time...

  • Segovia might be more virtuoso in a sense that he plays easier (look at Bream's face when he plays, he is really working whereas Segovia can play while sleeping) and could play faster. Bream in my opinion is far, far more musical and therefor a much more complete guitar player

  • I would say that Segovia is also extreamly musical, just as bream, but in a much more subtle and complex way. Its harder to find/hear it for most people i think.

  • Sounds like you are rather full of yourself.

As a side note, and this isn't an absolute truth, so don't worry: Considering the period Segovia played in means that his style would be seen as more traditional. This aspect is merely emphasized by the fact that much of the pedagogy we have comes from Segovia, as well.

  • Haha yeah yeah, what are you talking about man. Firstly, how am i full of myself, for saying that segovia is musical? haha shit. And that cute little side note of yours, has nothing to do with the discussion of segovia beeing musicaly in his playing or not. Of course segovia, one of, if not the best guitar player of all time, is verry much musicaly in his playing.

  • You ascribe Segovia a subtlety and complexity that he did not necessarily have.

As far as talent goes, he was definitely good, but Julian Bream is as good, if not better, than Segovia.

And my side note is relevant due to your comments about Segovia's playing (subtle and complex). He was staunchly traditional, which tends to forgo the Romanticism subtlety you're giving him. I'm not saying he's not "musicaly", as you put it. Just not in the sense that you say he is.

  • amen

  • For me, Julian Bream is after Segovia the greatest guitar player ever, his interpretations and the colors within are simply great. Thank you very much for posting this video about such a great master! Saludos desde Mexico ;);)

  • i agree wholly. He is broader than russell in my opinion though I enjoy Russell for his technical perfection and the color he produces by not using any rest strokes which is unique and gives his playing a precise feeling.

  • I was lucky enough to see him play live a few times.

  • *can't.

    Why Bream never plays Barrios?

  • He has got spanish sound.

I can imagine how Bream could play Barrios...

  • It's disappointing to see comments comparing different guitarists both of great gifts. It is not a competition...that's the arena of talent contests. Bream is superb at squeezing every drop of musicality out of any piece he plays. His tone variation is probably without equal and his facial expressions are just a natural response, not a message of technical difficulties. He's always played like this, and it makes a good change from a poker face or uninvolved body language. Lovely performance.

  • fingerhorn4 well said

  • Julian Bream, I believe, has not been in the best of health but I also believe he is working on 2 books. I wish the man good health and hope he is able to enjoy his retirement and publish the books - I look forward to them!

  • Don't say something bad on other guitar players when watching julian bream,he does play from heart

Not only li jie,but also john williams looks boring and without emotion, but when john williams and julian bream come together,we have the best duet ever

  • right on BRO... could not get it more right.. music from ther heart.. all other guitarist are good or even better than bream.. but his unique style allows him to share the true escense of the piece. all transmitted through his performances. my favorite ever..

But i am gonna ask kaori muraji to marry me.. lol

  • I wonder if I could go to Bream before he dies, let him put his hand on my head and bless me.

  • art

  • Oh-my-goodness... Julian Bream is BY FAR my all-time favorite guitarist... What passion in his playing! If I could even have 1/4 of his technique, let alone his incredible expressiveness, I would be considered a gifted and extremely talented musician in my own right. Julian Bream is a master among masters!!! Thank goodness for all of his recordings - his memory is preserved, and cherished.

  • I can write for you any sheet music

  • Superb! Bravo! TY

  • thank you for all the videos you send me, paulostroff, so beautiful ! kisses !!

  • My pleasure Maria! Glad that you enjoyed them!

  • Li Jie is NOWHERE near Julian Bream, nowhere. He plays from his heart, he plays with spirit, and as his movements while playing dictate, he FEELS the music, he's a different level of guitarist, all Li Jie knows is the notes in the piece not how its supposed to feel. For God sakes Julian went to Spain. So please do not compare the two, it is a senseless comparison

  • I agree that Bream's obvious passion and backdrop of Spain make his videos a joy to watch and Li Jie's boring in comparison. But I think comparing is still valid. Li Jie is from China, with a culture low on personal expression, so it's hard to say what she is feeling as she plays. I think her playing, if not her expressions, are good enough that just listening, we can feel the music. That said, I do adore Bream.

  • awesome video!

    thanks!!

  • Playing above the sound hole is difficult because the strings vibrate more and last longer thus you need to do more muting. Julian Bream is a master like no other. My rating is = Segovia no 1, Bream no 2, Williams no 3.

  • What I like about Julian Bream is that he tends to play with his right hand directly above the sound hole thus getting a more mellow tone.

  • Li Jie is more technical, Julian plays with his hart...like a lover...

The guitar in his hands is just another part of Julian, you can't put in any other way.

    Magnificent.

  • Every single piece that he plays, he owns it!

    Always superb!

  • Wow! I think i like his version better than li Jie. Un be wev able

  • The first great guitarist I was exposed to as a kid, about 12 years old, 40 years ago. I still have the record and it still moves me. Thank you Mr. Bream for a lifetime of musical and spiritual enrichment.

  • england is very lucky to have had this great musician and guitarist. I have seen nothing comparable from S America or indeed Australia

  • I confer.

  • John Williams was actually born in Australia, although he didn't grow up there.

And Tommy Emmanuel from Australia ;) Although he isn't classical, he's a magnificent fingerpicker!!

  • My gosh filmed right at the Generalife overlooking the Alhambra!!!! I always thought this piece was made for the guitar... I can't imagine a piano doing it justice. Thank you camofox for this treasure.....

  • Brilliant! His fast yet clear arpegios are great and although his playing is kind of casual, it does sound great - it's a folk music in the end!

  • why people who dont play any instrument has to talk or whrite any coments,if you people dont play please shut up....I play the guitar you can look at my videos and coment only for people who kwnos music, and have respet 4 it.

  • Beam is a virtuoso - no argument there - but his facial antics convey the message: this piece of music is almost beyond my extraordinary capabilities. Li Jie plays it as if it were a piece of cake. She manages to make look very easy something which is very difficult. And that, my dear friends, is one of the main characteristics of truly great artists.

  • Most advanced guitarists, especially in formal competions, play like "a piece of cake". Judges must listen beyond the novelty of clean technique. If you listen to enough variety you will hear subtle differences and hidden gems. Many green ears, perceiving music as an olympic event, succumb to the illusion that older masters had less to offer. The technical quality for which you listen (time and tune) eventually becomes a small tree in the forest as you study further.

  • shut up!

  • Actually, temifv, I'm saddened that the only quality so many people hear in a musical performance is technical clarity. Bream here had mastered technique long ago (in his late teens I believe) and is offering an original interpretation with poetic depth. Li Jie's interpretation is actually a lot more basic in it's overall meaning and depth. Of course listening to music is a subjective matter. I'll shut up now.

  • Bream was a child prodigy. He already performed in concerts at 13 years. There is nothing in guitar he hasn't played/recorded. He also mastered the lute. Many famous modern composers composed works specifically for Bream. Technique is no longer the issue with Bream, all is concerned with, obviously, is to let his heart speak through his hands, his body, his face. Some people make the mistake of assuming their discomfort is due to Bream, instead of something in their own personality.

  • Thank you. Bream's fame didn't come through a conspiracy of history, and I really encourage anyone interested in classical guitar to study his work.

  • Ha, playing it like a piece of cake means you're a great artist. That's hilarious.

  • im sry but holy crap what are you talking about julian bream is one of the great masters of the guitar he is one of the most creative musicains with useage of colours and had wonderful articulation of every note

  • this guy is almost half as good as li jie

  • this guy, in my opinion, is the preeminent authority of classical guitar ever. certainly better than li jie.

  • thats your opinion. i think it's painful to watch this man play what with all the facial contortions and twitching. considering his age and how long he's been playing these same songs over and over he'd better be good at it....Li Jie makes this song look easy and plays it better and after only having been playing classical guitar for 2 years at the age of 14 in her video. but then again you're british and you'd like to see fellow brits be the best at stuff.

  • ... First of all, Nutpunchedmyself, let's take a look at Bream... Ask any musician and he will tell you that Bream is one of the most authoritative figures, whose work has been and always will be a huge source of reference for guitarists. Li Jie? Don't make me laugh. It's so funny how you say "she makes this song look easy." First of all, it's not a song, and second, she sounds like crap. You're comparing a timeless legend to a half-assed Asian girl.

  • i dislike the way he tries to sell his music even further in these videos with the picturesque backgrounds and how he writhes with every emotionally dripping note like it pains him so. you're right, this isn't a song it's a "piece" of shit when bream is squeezing it out. ha, im just kidding, he's a virtuoso in his own right but i'd rather not watch him play. i'll bet there's at least 100 people now that can play as good as Bream and half of them are asian! women, small hands, great dexterity

  • Wrong again, little man. Grow up and develop some rational thinking abilities.

  • Bream is an artist, not an athlete or a porno actor. Yes there are some great young prodigies out there, but apparently the only thing that makes classical guitar special eludes your entire mentality about music. Listen again to Bream's anecdote about sonority, you might learn something.

  • @NutpuncherMcGee Your clueless about musicality. Music is bigger than all of us , including technique.

  • Why even compare people.

    Please dont do that.

  • BEYOND COMPARE!

    ONUR YAZGAN.

  • Thats filmed in the gardens around la Alhambra in Granada unless I'm mistaken - it must have been great fun to have been there and heard him play.

  • this piece is from malats, not from tarrega !

  • Como dice la voz en el video, es de Malats, y fue transcripta por Tarrega.

  • The video never says it is from tarrega..
