Carlton Cinema - quite simply the best film channel EVER on UK tv. Themed seasons, classic films, new films, all genres - EVERYTHING was on Carlton Cinema, no other channel can touch it for movie lovers before or since. Very, very sad when the channel closed down.
@chaoreturnsforgood76 Not sure to be honest, the continuity was always 4:3 on NTL, I can't remember for the films. But I do recall it being true 16:9 on On/ITV Digital.
@chaoreturnsforgood76 On ITVDigital, Carlton Cinema broadcast everything in anamorphic 16:9. They added black bars on the sides when showing 4:3 material.
@utubeguy35 Simple too few subscribers, crap software, crap hardware, aggresive marketing by Sky, ITV Digital paying way over the odds for the Football League. I think Carlton should have made this station available on Sky though, as it was a decent film channel, I preferred this to TCM personally.
@utubeguy35 Nope, the film was Body Heat, but the station went off air at 11.40pm, as I stayed up to record this, the channel was replaced on NTL with a caption at 12.00am.
@minxtail Nope, the two were seperate entities. Carlton Cinema was a channel available on Cable and DTT. Carlton Screen Advertising used to appear during the commercials at Cinemas, it took over Rank Screen Advertising in the mid 90s, Carlton Screen Advertising no longer exists, I think it's now called DCM. I hope that clears it up for you.
@steviegTVreturns Actually Rank Screen Advertising was renamed to RSA Advertising in 1992 and then Cinema Media in 1995 until 1997 when Carlton took over RSA Advertising it was renamed to Carlton Screen Advertising (CSA) it ceased to exist 3 years ago and it's now DCM.
On my cable when this happend the screen was blank with the cc dog then around 20 minutes later the screen turned to static R.I.P Carlton cinema 1999-2003
It's only a shame that Carlton Television was such a poor host. Getting into bed with the the excellent Granada Television and metamorphosing into the awful ITV network that the UK population now have to endure.
Carlton Cinema WAS going to go onto Sky but talks with them had collapsed and fallen by the wayside and that was also a factor in their decision to close the channel.
Farewell Carlton Cinema.

There were plans to put Carlton Cinema on Sky(and it nearly happened) but those talks collapsed and it never happened.

If Carlton Cinema was a 4:3 channel how come the idents/menus and trailers are in 16:9 and mainly in 14:9?

The film was Body Heat from 1981, and it was shown around 11 PM at night. The channel went off the air (when you recorded) at 1:40 AM.

Nothing, the screen went black, the CC DOG stayed on air, but the channel was removed around Midnight, this closedown was about 11.40pm.
steviegTVreturns 2 years ago
I thought CC was a great channel.
They had a brilliant library, not just carchase-explosion movies, and often sneaked out uncut versions of films shown cut on other channels
JoeScaramanga 3 years ago
According to Wikipedia, the final film shown was the 1981 neo-film noir "Body Heat".
MrUnidyne 3 years ago
It definately is, but Wiki says it closed at 4.35PM (ie in the afternoon... !)
I think they may mean AM
JoeScaramanga 3 years ago
Hehehe! Without me looking on here first, I found this is on Wikipedia too. Thank you to Wikipedia for this info:
"A substantial portion of the 1981 movie, Body Heat, starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner, was filmed in downtown Lake Worth."

God bless Carlton Cinema.
And that's because of that CRAPPY ITV Digital!
Tripp1993 3 years ago
Carlton Cinema began on November 15, 1998, but then ITV Digital went bankrupt and then, it lead to the end of Carlton Cinema on March 31, 2003.
