okay so if your an urban homesteader i understand chickens they produce eggs goats produce milk if you do the whole breeding cycles but the rabbits? for some reason i cant see you eating them so what purpose do they serve manure maybe? plus if that were the case then both the goats and chickens double as meat animals
im a big fan of all your videos, i just disagree about how the goats dont get enough room to run and jump(mine have two acres and i only have 4) please please please re-home your goats
do you let your chickens out to run around the garden? They are great weeders and have a tenacious appetite for bugs. Not to mention their eggs would be more nutritious with a broader diet. Since you practice organic methods you wouldn't need to worry about harmful toxins.
do not copy her goat pen plans, they may look nice but its mean to the animal who has to live in it, think about it, goats are the same size as dogs, and how much room does a dog get, probably about and acre or two
You misunderstood my question, I do NOT want to copy her goat pen. It's obvious in the video that the goat pen she keeps her goats in is WAY to small. I was just curious to see how big the pen actually was. If I did have goats I would NEVER keep them in something like that, goats need acres to live on not a tiny pen, even if they are pygoras.
@ziggy2sound4u Most people who are wishing to live sustainably and be good to the enviroment are also interested in keeping their animals happy :/ Yes, I was wrong there, they do not need acres to live on, but having an acre or two of forest or brush area would make they happier than keeping them in a pen all the time. Or am I just assuming that your friend keeps them in there all the time? :o I think that would be totally fine to keep them in that size of pen at night or something.
That "fellow" is not my friend, but yes he and his wife keeps them in that all the time...they are animals and their "happiness" is not necessarily what you are after...Their meat and milk on the other hand.....
@ziggy2sound4u Right, they are farm animals, not pets after all I understand that :o people keep them around for they're many uses. In my view, you'd think that you would get better milk and meat from them being in an enviroment that they were meant for...
but believe me, I think one thing we can agree on is our dislike for PETA :/ I want absolutely no part of them. yes I am a major animal lover and believe in them living in enviroments they were meant for but I don't take things as far.
@ziggy2sound4u Right, she is being very sustainable. No I agree, I wouldn't put just two goats out on acres, I would either get more goats or use part of the land for a garden. I think that the pen she has for her goats is simply too small. You can't put goats out on land in the city so pens is what people have to use, but I don't believe her pen is the appropriate size for goats to be living in full time.
Although it is a practice used by some cultures throughout the world to eat rabbits and goats, I do not believe that is her goal in owning and feeding her's.
How do you clean all these cages? TY

@SalmonSlayer1991 If you watch more of her videos she uses the fur for weaving her own yarn. Also she does use the manure for fertilizer.

Great job, garden girl!
This just goes to show how a person can be self sufficient in little space, even in a city!
More Americans ought to do this before the dollar crashes.

@dogpup23
No, in fact goats do NOT need acres to live on......
I know a fellow who keeps 8 goats in an enclosure of 20' long by 10' wide.
Of course, he must feed them everyday....

My point is, that GardenGirl is being VERY sustainable by putting to use the land she has available to her...
I, myself, would not have a pair of goats running over "acres".
This is a waste of land, that could be put to other uses, such as corn/oats/hay growing, which will feed you and the animals this winter.
The object of this is feeding herself and her family, not necessarily making livestock happy.

I guess that you keep your chickens for eggs. Are the goats and rabbits pets? I couldn't imagine that you would keep the for their meat...

She shears the goats and rabbits for their fur and spins it into yarn. They are not harmed in the process, she has meat chickens too!
