I have a question for you. I'm a big fan of GBV but never got to see them live because their shows sold out in 10 minutes all the time. Is it true that they were popular in England and Europe? By popular, compare their influence to, say The Pixies.
@captainbillshatner Pixies were massive when i went to see them in 1989, but unfortunately, GBV are still pretty unheard of over here in the UK with just a 'cult' following. I got to see them at the Reading/Leeds festival in 2002 but most of the crowd were New Found Glory fans who were on next, what a treat they had!!!
I LOVE this band, but I have to add that in this video the singer looks like a darts player! Not sure if anyone else will get that. Why aren't these guys more well known... incredible songs!
Well the problem with the "independant" label nowadays is that the crappy half-pop bands such as Barenaked ladies and Edwin Mcain got dropped by major labels because they sucked so "Indie" labels picked them up. Now they are going around claiming indie credibility because they are on a Indie label.
I saw them New Years Eve in 2002 (maybe 2001...?) in Indianapolis.
The room was non-smoking, so everyone stood outside in the cold, that is until the band came on and Robert lit up a cigarette on stage. All bets were off then!
This lineup was very tight, but the original lineup with Tobin Sprout and the other guys was THE ultimate group. They were experimental, powerful, and unpretentious.
this is rock 'n' roll, "kids" (as Bob might say). musical, hook-laden rock 'n' roll. as there hasn't been much of it for several decades, it almost sounds foreign in today's bland, imitative, often tuneless musical landscape...........but Pollard continues to be a perpetual wellspring.
Holy shit...you nailed it. Expand this into an essay and send it to Rolling Stone as an open letter. "Almost sounds foreign in today's bland, imitative, often tuneless musical landscape" is such a perfectly distilled assessment of the shit we're assaulted with daily. Tuneless is the watchword here. Tuneless poseurs with no soul and no understanding of rock n roll. Or the bizarre array of sub-metal genres that have sucked the brains out of our youth. VIVE GBV!!!!!!
drunk rock...not punk rock. just jokin'...always liked GBV. so sorry never got to see live. nothing like them today. never will be. what does pass for music today is just sad, sad, sad. indie rock is simply.... therapeutic
Robert Pollard on tour is exactly this and better. GbV did not break up, only another set of line up changes and excuses for additional output under new names and devices. Best is yet to come and not to be missed!~ Big Tour starts late Sept. 2008.
In 1939 a man named the "The Head Slasher" broke into a family's house in Great Britain and sliced all of the family member's heads off and began a collection of heads. It is said that he died in 1975, but his ghost still haunts the people who do not repost this message to five different videos in less than five minutes. If you choose not to repost this message your head will belong to his collection.
This band (and all the legions of other greats like Dinosaur, Pavement, Sebadoh etc etc)rock so much harder than all the arctic monkeys and kooks and Kaiser chiefs put together. Kid's today should demand better rock
GBV's guitarist. What's his name? I always forget because they went through so many over the years. But my point is, is that he's like, an underrated guitar-GOD! If you listen to his work on their recent catalogs, he's been consistently more innovative and brazen then, well, ANYONE in rock music today!
And not once, any of you said the stupid word-'awesome' in describing the band!! Thanks much! That fuckin word is used way too much by todays' robot generation(s). G. Help Us, GBV is gone! We only have our memories, surrounded by fools that know one adjective....awesome! I hate them...
Punk is not a sound, but an attitude. In the 1970's, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Television, were all considered punk and, they did not sound like the Ramones.
Punk may be an attitude, but when it comes to modern music punk has a certain sound. This music is indie rock. Indie means independent. They are an Independent group
Its good to not see Bob drunk as a skunk like he was at GBV's last concert. I mean i know he can sing his stuff well live, but when he gets hammered he can barely recall his lyrics!!! lol no joke this guy's still cool though!
I love this song, it's one of their best I've heard! whats there one album or something called human amusements? theres more to it than that on the title
this was my first gbv song. talk about hearing music for the first time - holy shit. check out tim staring longingly at nate's bosom. yes, nate's bosom.
Awesome. I'm glad this is finally up on Youtube. Now if only someone would post their two appearances on Conan. I'm not holding my breath for their first TV appearance on The Jon Stewart Show back in 95, though.
thanks Bob... and the boys

When punk sounds like punk, then it's not punk any more, is it?
Otherwise what's the bleedin point?
As for these guys, I always liked whoever it is singing the high harmony for GBV. He's a lot more imaginative than your typical backup singer.
