There's one thing that bothers me about this game...one thing. And it's the voice acting. It's not very believable. in case anyone wanted to kno b4 they asked the question: the Necromorphs are aliens. NOT viruses/infections. they are microbial, extremely tiny, they reanimate dead tissue and then devour it and take its place in the body so they have a 'schematic' to follow. the infectors are human torsos with the skin of the ribs split open and turned in2 flaps so their esophagus (being a hollow tube) can be easily adapted 2 a proboscis that injects the alien creatures directly in2 the dead brain.

The necromoph virus spreads throughout the body extremely fast and mutates the body into a more useful form. The necromorphs are simply corpses that contain the necromorph virus, therefore they technically are infected. They are just carriers/hosts of the microbe that the organism then heavily mutates.

Whether or not the original necromorph VIRUS was extratterestrial or not is not known because that's not info the game devs have released. But these microbial life forms are man made. They don't devour the flesh, they join it and use it as clay. Here's a log from the first game that explains a whole hell of a lot, and there's even more of the logs on this wiki.
