My favorite song by my favorite artist! I feel exactly the same way sometimes; so genuinely sorry for my actions but too fucked up to understand why they're wrong. This song captures the deep regret and frustration of a misfit.
@nosorog91 "Jawbone walk and Jawbone talk; jawbone eat ya with a knife and fork." Not the title, but some of the words. Also, Sukey Jump, that was mentioned. I think he played (live" more than recorded, as it was easy to transport and had good volume for dances and he could still work that walking bass thing, though more primitive. So...two that I know of, and I think I've heard em all...
Lead Belly's parents were not "ex-slaves," and his rhythms are complex...he was often known to keep a steady beat w. his left foot, while his right tapped out complex, syncopated rhythms, while he played 12-string, sometimes slapping the guitar for accents on top of that. He also played Cajun accordion and piano. And right on re: Geo Harrison, "No Lead Belly, No Beatles." His voice and guitar were so powerful they could project over any hall pre days of amplification.
Just read the description......This guy killed a man and sung his way out of jail. He wrote songs about people in pop culture before it was in vogue. He played various instruments. And his parents were most likely ex slaves,so I'm guessing he didn't go to any fancy music schools to sharpen his craft......thats just fucking badass!
This song was recorded in the prison yard at Angola, right after Take A Whiff On Me. On both songs if you listen close, you can hear the wind blow. Lead Belly was wearing convict stripes "because of some misbehavior" (John A Lomax). Lomax didn't mention this song in his book; as far as I know Lead Belly never recorded it again.
You seem to know your stuff on Leadbelly. So I want to ask if you know where I can find the version of Where Did You Sleep Last Night that appears on the Leadbelly "Three Songs" video. It's the first track in which he hums the melody and plays guitar. Any help would be great.
just saw this post, I guess the whole thing about music is that it is the Rhythm
that matters, there is no fancy picking here, just timing that fits with his singing.
Hate to mention it and wouldn't broadcast it, but Leadbelly's timing is not great,
if you try to play along with him. Some Jazz musicians in his day refused or did not like playing with him for that very reason. But Hey, when you are a solo performer who cares. my musical life started after hearing his records.
@ORBOD Thats interesting especially when good jazz artists are known for improvising to other musicians timing. It seems to me playing with lead belly would be a good trip cause you would have to put forth a real effort to stay on his ride. Some jazz artists are snoody cause they think jazz music has the best flow, well if your not willing to adjust to they way lead belly plays then you would just kill the spirit of his music anyway, so Im glad they decided to just listen.

Can't raise nothin but potatoes on a sandy land
I'm sorry, sorry mama to my heart"

Whew. One could get lost for months trying (and probably failing) to figure out how he did that on his battered old 12.
His voice in these earliest recordings is higher and more adventurous than in his New York City work later. What a guy.
