Im right handed and I put my congas like this. When I have only 2 (Conga and Tumba) The conga is in front of me (main drum as you say) and the tumba is in my right hand. When I have three (Conga Tumba Quinto), Quinto is the main drum, Conga LEFT and Tumba RIGHT
Well, since I never get to play any Salsa music, (there's not a latin community in the area I come from although I wish there was)I'll usually apply what I've learned on congas to the gigs which are available my area. (That usually means I'll have to do an R&B, Rock, or Blues gig.)
you have to learn at least the basic tumbaos and guaguanco first if you want to play these stuff. If you develop more rhythms, you can combine and create rhythms and solos much easier. Check out one of Daniel Sadownick's solos and his performance with Screaming Headless Torsos. You will know, what i mean.
Chembo,I'm gad that you have mentioned Tommy Lopez, who has played with the Great "Tito Rodriguez" as well as Vicentico Valdes, which Manny Oquendo was on Bongoes and La Perfecta, Little Ray,well you name it,played with Miguelito Valdes,Pupy,Tito Rodriguez and others, but I think that Manny Oquendo and Any

I play (or shall I say, I try to play!) 3 congas in a tight triangle configuration. My question is, what setup is proper for a right handed player?
I started using the quinto as my main drum but then I've seen other players use the conga as the main drum. Which way is correct?
Thanks for any help.

It depends what you want to play, what you are doing.
