Nick's getting my vote. Why? Because the Liberal Democrats are the only party who has made getting rid of ID cards one of it's main policies. We have to stop them NOW. It's the biggest threat to civil liberties that we have ever faced, and if, God forbid, they do force them upon us, there will be no turing back. We'll be forever locked into New Labour's control grid.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do Liberal dmeocrats have a role in British politics?, their never going to get in power, their polcies would be hugely damaging to the UK, there just a waste of time.
This new liberal democrat, Nick Clegg is a waste of space, same old politican a bit of fancy rhetoric uses irrelevant issues like referendum/northern rock/civil liberties rubbish to try and win votes. He's a good actor. Can't the politicians tackle the real issues like Crime/immigration/Economy/Benefit fraud/foreign polciy? David Cameron was ranting on about referendum in last pmqs what a waste of time, who cares, tackle the real issues.
Okay, so you'll campaign to reduce taxes for lower and middle income families and thus attempting to gain a large amount of the votes, but what about students? You talk about a fair chance in life but what about those who start going out into the world already in debt? Universities cost a lot of money for people who have none, have you got any plans or campaigns to rectify this?
So the new leader orders his MP's to abstain on the Lisbon vote TO ENSURE IT PASSES and then has the gall to suggest they are not breaking their mainfesto promise.
If I wanted to vote for more Labour spin I would do so directly I don't need this party to offer the same lies.

All these parties work the new world order. Please research the truth. This country is falling apart and people have been conditioned to ignor seriours ishues. The vaccines are poisoned, the water is poisoned. They are constantly launching criminal wars and taking are liberties away by the day. wake up
In order for a democracy to be as healthy as possible, you should vote for the third largest party.
This is because the parties who do not win are the ones which monitor and stop the existing government from failing us as citizens - so vote for them so they can have more seats, and better protect us!
The LibDems do want a referendum on our EU membership and would campaign to remain in. What in particular do you oppose about the EU? It has been Europe's biggest stabiliser in history and as long as we remain in I will continue to make use of my increased freedom.
Oh and also, the issue of the EU is largely ceremonial that only a small number of people (including you by the sounds of it) obsess about. Which chapter in the Lisbon Treaty do you disagree with? Reforming schools and the NHS is far more important to most people.
No the EU is anything but ceremonial. The EU affects everything to do with your life. 80% of law in this country now comes from Brussels. Yeah people are stupid, they dont realise that the EU can legislate in every area which you mentioned, and all the others. The EU will ultimatley be unacceptable to people. It will also lead to tyranny
Who says that 80% of our law comes from Brussels? The only area where the majority of legislation comes from Brussels is on the environment, which needs international legislation otherwise our carbon savings would be offset by another country. We're actually becoming less eurosceptic and 80% of my generation think it's a good thing.
The 2/3 of the electorate who don't bother to vote don't get to complain about the NHS, about potholes in their local roads, about foreign policy or the economy. It's the only thing the states asks of you, in exchange for which they educate and house you in addition to giving you massively subsidised health care and allowing you to choose your own government.
What a ridiculous thing to say that only politicians benefit from politics. Politics is the process by which our society makes decisions, if people aren't voting that doesn't imply that the benefits of politics are for politicians, it just implies a lack of trust in our politicians, and that's probably due to our encouragement of spite in the media as much as anything.
Clegg did waffle. Why concentrate on ID cards? There are such bigger issues on everyone's minds.
You've just contradicted yourself defending them one minute and criticising the next.. You obviously have never been on the recieving end of these bastards have you? Ever had letters from your local council demanding £1000 and threatening you with prison if you dont pay? Irrespective of whether you have the money or not. Ever been harrassed by the police or Social Services? I doubt it. You wouldnt be, and neither was i at your age. Come back in 10 years and give us your opinion of them then.
It's not just ID cards that the libdems are concerned about it is the National Identity Register that uses biometrics and encompasses over fifty categories of personal information. The LibDems are liberal (the clue is in the name) and this is why they are so concerned about the erosion of our civil liberties through Labour's "war against terror legislation." There are other issues yes, so just because Clegg didn't manage to fit it into the video, it doesn't mean that the LibDems aren't concerned
I dont think ive ever heard a more sterile and meaningless load of waffle. what clegg promises is the same every politician promises, and none of them have the guts to stand up for the poeple who keep this country on its feet.
wow another one allowing free speech, Gords comments r pending approval, however free speech on here, so, when r we going to stop being so tolerant to the intolerant of this world, politicians r in charge, so its up to u guys
that music was so cheesy. its like some joke 80's cop show. shame they got rid of ming, he was the person that liberal people wanted to vote for, instead they vote in clegg, who is a completely artificial leader in my eyes.
I've actually just changed my stance on this party. Stephen Lloyd Eastbourne is a good guy. He might get my vote now. But the actual party has shown it's true colours. It's not liberal. Ming was liberal.
Thankfully the demographics of England and the rest of the United Kingdom are, slowly but surely, changing big time.
African and Asian immigration and their huge birth rates will ensure that the whole of the United Kingdom will be an Islamic state in a few decades time.
And Sharia Law IS the way forward, no matter what the Nazi media says.
As much as I support immigration, I doubt that we will be an islamic state in "a few decades". The current muslim population is just 2.2%. Hopefully we will be a secular country in the future - not a "Muslim" country, nor a "Christian" country.
Great message and I agree with all you say but we seem to be a bit short on visibility. Cameron seems to be getting all the TV exposure at the moment. When are we going to see your face on the box giving the LD point of view?
It's a major issue only for the 9% of the electorate who say it is and care. Surely you would rather the Lib Dems cared more about far more important issues: the NHS, schooling, the environment and social mobility rather than this stupid eurosceptic nonsense which too many people obsess about. We're all citizens of the world, and the freedom to live, work and travel in any EU country is one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century.
As Lib Dem supporters and members we were dismayed to hear no mention of global warming/green issues - something which was given priority by Chris Huhne. Surely the effects of climate change are the most crucial issue facing us? Neither the Labour Party or the Conservatives are proposing anything practical to change our wasteful consumerism and ostrich-like attitude so it is up to the Lib Dems to tackle this.
Loved it great message, as id expect. But can we PLEASE move away from this late 70's 'were broadcasting in living colour!' music at the start and end. It makes us look amateurish and small time. Still good work nick!
Excellent stuff, Nick. Now let us all get down to the job of promoting these messages throughout Britain ahead of the local elections. There is a lot of work to do!
very well said there Nick Clegg. With your great speech, I can't wait for 2009 to vote for a party that the UK so badly needs, the Liberal democrats can take us to a great age of what really needs to be done AND changed!
Nick, I love your focus and passion - although i want to feel it from your soul rather than a teletext - but i do think you put your finger on a core feature of a democratic quality of life for those who feel powerless to change things but also for those who want some moral leadership that they can give their energy to.
Congratulations on your win, Nick. Splendid video and great 'New Year Message'. All excellent points and I'm sure you and the party will make clear the stance on the issues raised by other correspondents as and when time needs/permits. 2008 will be an undoubted year of opportunity for the party and under Nick's leadership we will make the most of it.
The elderly? How would you help them have a dignified retirement?
University? Free?
Property? More houses and more help for first time buyers?
People will only vote Lib Dem if they know what your policies are. Tell the country what you're going to do when you come to power and shout it out loud!
Israel / Palestine? Would we continue our support of a state which has occupied Palestinian Territory for over 40 years? A state which has used the so-called war on terror to label political prisoners and freedom fighters as terrorists. Or would we be willing to stand-up to Israel and the Lobby?
Free trade? There was freer trade during the British Empire compared to today!
Good video. However, It doesn't address a number of important issues.
Foreign policy:
What would the relationship be between the UK and EU? Continued fake reluctance, or pro-EU?
What would the relationship be between the UK and US? Would we continue to accept a partner which supports authoritarian regimes for political purposes, or would we align ourselves with liberal states?
What about the UN? Would we promote reform? If so, in what ways?
There can't be a "relationship" between the UK and EU because we ARE the EU. And since when has there been fake reluctance? We've always been strongly pro-EU as far as I'm aware.
The relationship with the US must remain strong - which i'm sure the LibDems are promoting.
Sir Menzies Campbell was a strong supporter of the UN but believed it needed to develop new mechanisms for dealing with humanitarian crises.
The US funded Osama Bin Laden via the ISI in Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Furthermore, US support of Musharraf has delayed the transition to democracy in the country.
The US supports every non-democratic country in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is a classic example.
The US has sponsored terrorism in South America since the 60s.
I completely agree that US intervention in world politics has done far more damage than good. I would certainly favour an anti-western party ruling middle-eastern states democratically than a pro-western dictatorship hated by its citizens. Then those countries can decide for themselves how to run, and when those states infringe upon the liberties of its citizens, invades another country or sponsors terrorism, then international intervantion via the UN should occur.
The Single European Act (SEA) 1987. Britain was concerned about losing some of its power and sovereignty. A watered-down treaty was eventually signed.
The Treaty on European Union (TEU) also known as The Maastricht Treaty (1991). Britain was reluctant because of economic reasons. John Major insisted on retaining Britain's opt-out from the Social Chapter and was anti-EU so he would be supported by Conservative Party MPs.
Britain is not as anti-EU as it seems. Eurosceptics are far more vocal because they disapprove of our membership. Only 30% want to leave the EU.
The relationship with the US needs reform, the one-way "special" relationship clearly isn't working; however cutting ties with the single-biggest economy in the world would be the maddest thing possible.
I would much prefer an active role in Europe than the puppet of Bush, but cutting ties would be stupid.
its ok tellin everyone all this on here but since the last election, polictics has became petty and ive hardly heard from the lib dems apart from when ming stood down!! please stand up and be counted but please get back to important issues and stop tellin everyone who makes a mistake to be fired its only a mistake and no one is perfect!!
Nick Clegg knows what its like to be poor. Labour with their time in power, seem to have forgotten it. How can poor people afford something like ID Cards, for instance. Labour have already trebled the price of passports.
I think that an alternative to ID cards should have been promoted -I think we should all have a passport which would save money and do the same job. I don't understand what the losing of discs has to do with the issue. Losing discs is losing discs - just the same as losing paper files. Any Mrs Mopp can view the latter in Government offices.
"I don't understand what the losing of discs has to do with the issue"
The lost discs contained personal data in the care of the authorities, if you are still willing to allow them to build central databases containing sensitive information about you then thats fine, just don't expect me to do so.
The medium of holding the information is irrelevant to the issue. The Government has the information otherwise how could it do its business with (in that instance) the child benefit claimants? If you have a passport, all the information is held on a Government disc. All I am suggesting is that we make the passport the ID card, thus saving money all ropund. Privacty doesn't come into it.
I agree - freedom has been eroded both by the growing economic gap but also by deliberate policy. Basic rights such as free speech and habeas corpus have been and continue to be under attack by the moral cowards currently in charge. But you chose not to mention small businesses - millions of people rely on their own small and micro-businesses for their living and we need to make radical changes to a tax and regulatory system which make scant difference between them and the huge corporates.
The LibDems are campaigning for a referendum on our membership of the EU, and would campaign wholehartedly to remain in. The people campaigning for a referendum on thr Lisbon Treaty are hiding behind their desire to leave the EU.
Voting FibDem is like unknowingly going to bed with a transexual and ending up with cock up your arse

find I am pretty ready to think away most other political, economic, and
technological advantages." - Paul Goodman, 1970

Nick, I love your focus and passion - although i want to feel it from your soul rather than a teletext - but i do think you put your finger on a core feature of a democratic quality of life for those who feel powerless to change things but also for those who want some moral leadership that they can give their energy to.

Congratulations on your win, Nick. Splendid video and great 'New Year Message'. All excellent points and I'm sure you and the party will make clear the stance on the issues raised by other correspondents as and when time needs/permits. 2008 will be an undoubted year of opportunity for the party and under Nick's leadership we will make the most of it.

Renewable energy?
Domestic policy:
Crime: How would you deal with the yob culture?

Africa?
World Bank?
IMF?
Nuclear weapons?
Nuclear power?

Continued...

In 1995 the US welcomed the new Indonesian president General Suharto who is one of the worst killers of the 20th century.
The US flew Islamists from Afghanistan to Bosnia.
The US has been the chief perpetrator of terror since 1947.
The UN doesn't need new mechanisms to deal with humanitarian crises. It needs new mechanisms to reduce state-centric hegemony.

The US is funding illegal Israeli settlements!

The Euro. Britain is certainly not pro-Euro. Why? Because of economic sovereignty and its ties to the US.
The relationship with the US should not remain strong. It is a state which has supported terrorism and non-democratic states for decades.

Nick Clegg knows what its like to be poor. Labour with their time in power, seem to have forgotten it. How can poor people afford something like ID Cards, for instance. Labour have already trebled the price of passports.
mark8199 4 years ago
I think that an alternative to ID cards should have been promoted -I think we should all have a passport which would save money and do the same job. I don't understand what the losing of discs has to do with the issue. Losing discs is losing discs - just the same as losing paper files. Any Mrs Mopp can view the latter in Government offices.

"I don't understand what the losing of discs has to do with the issue"
The lost discs contained personal data in the care of the authorities, if you are still willing to allow them to build central databases containing sensitive information about you then thats fine, just don't expect me to do so.
Oh! and I already have a passport thank you!
swiftysmithuk 4 years ago
The medium of holding the information is irrelevant to the issue. The Government has the information otherwise how could it do its business with (in that instance) the child benefit claimants? If you have a passport, all the information is held on a Government disc. All I am suggesting is that we make the passport the ID card, thus saving money all ropund. Privacty doesn't come into it.
swrural 4 years ago
Do you feel you need an ID Card, if so for what?
Tell me how I will benefit?
Passports are already part of the ID Card scheme and are now chipped and ready for linking to giant databases.
privacy does come into it!

The message on liberty and personal freedom is required, but personal responsibility also needed a mention.

I agree - freedom has been eroded both by the growing economic gap but also by deliberate policy. Basic rights such as free speech and habeas corpus have been and continue to be under attack by the moral cowards currently in charge. But you chose not to mention small businesses - millions of people rely on their own small and micro-businesses for their living and we need to make radical changes to a tax and regulatory system which make scant difference between them and the huge corporates.
tresandutube 4 years ago
All very good & I agree with you 100% in the ID Card scheme but what about our EU referendum? This was on the last Party Manifesto.
irisher44 4 years ago
The LibDems are campaigning for a referendum on our membership of the EU, and would campaign wholehartedly to remain in. The people campaigning for a referendum on thr Lisbon Treaty are hiding behind their desire to leave the EU.
