I play a lot of instruments, and Piano was my first but I quit so long ago and only played for about 1 year, I recently came back to it and discovered I am more naturally gifted at piano then any other instruments and improv is something I never knew I could be good at, this tutorial helped me improve my improv, thanks so much
This man is an unbelievable genius and I could only hope to be this talented and gifted for a fraction of time in my life. Your sound is unreal Torley, I hope to see you rocking untill I die.
Hey Torley, your videos are always awesome. Sorry to bother you but i was just wondering what piano VST you usually use in your videos, and what sound card and CPU you use, if that's possible.
hey man i ran across your video today and i must say that i am glad i did. I've been playing piano for ten, almost eleven years but ive nevery really tried any improv. It hasnt been until recently that ive been interested in trying it out. I love your tutorials man, keep up the good work!
I would love to see you do some more complicated improvisation. Maybe some modal borrowing, a few modulations, maybe some jazzy colour-tone chords. Although nice touch with the picardy third at the end.
i have been on the piano for like 3 months now and i'm slowly learning but its all just stuff i'm making up on my own. I need help, if you would look at some of my horrible piano video's and tell me what i should work on I would be gratefull.
Torley, the keyboard preview thingy in Garageband will let you display all keys (shortcut: Command-K), quite similar to that one actually. Only problem is you need to have Garageband in the foreground for it to be visible, though I guess you could judy silence the instrument in Garageband and still have the input register in Ableton Live(?).
Before I used to think that, computer generation in music, is wrong, that it takes something away form the artist and makes it something anyone can do, I have heard your Dream Journal, and love it. I was very wrong I really like the What lies beyond, it is everything that is missing in music today, for that matter your music, shows that you do in fact have more skill, then most of the people who call them selfs artist.
That's well-put. Personally, I listen to a lot of Metal and the newer bands tend to put more electronically-generated bits in there than some of the older bands, even though the latter who have released newer albums have taken advantage of that as well. I used to think that doing all that was somehow taking away from physical-instrument skill, but I realized that it only adds to it and a lot of work goes into each piece regardless, and that's something to respect.
this is the best turtorial ever , why? (Don't get me wrong , i love your other videos too!!! ) because you include so much tips for beginners ... thank you!
Nice resolve at the end going to the Major after building all that "tension" with the minor.. I like the improv stuff Torley, thats why I subscribed.. That hour long tutorial "inspired" me.. I am learning the guitar and I bought a yamaha keyboard to work out the guitar tabs and eventually use midi files I can upload into my keyboard to accompany myself on guitar.I hope you can do more improv stuff.. You make it look so easy with embelishments that as you explain are really just icing .Keep goin!
I wish i started playing when i was little! I am SO MAD AT my parents.. now i'm 20 and I have that inner thought "its too late".. specially when i watch little kids flying thought it
Oh don't get me wrong I have basic skills or a tleast enough to fool somebody I can play piano....but I want to be like him or what is considered "GOOD". It takes about 10,000hrs to master it.. I don't have time for all that with college and social life.
Screw the rules. Embrace only the tones that come to you in the moment when improving.

When you were explaining the chord progression, I was waiting for you to go down to A! At least, that's what I do.

This is unbelievable! I can definitely tell that you enjoy playing and teaching the piano. I use the same chord progression when I improv, too.

Hey, I really like it. You should try replacing the Bb chord with a Gminor IF you want to give it a minor sound. Great video.

There's one called "GTG Micro Keyboard" which Torley led me to a while back, though it isn't quite as good as Midi Keys and has its flaws.
