Slaves were more like Butlers, servants, maids, etc. Most times they were caught after tribal conflicts or a convicted criminal. 3. AFRICOM is integrated with USAID and Dept of State, first of its kind.
4. AFRICOM focuses on development, defense, and diplomacy.
1. It's true, AFRICOM does indeed helps African countries build their security capacity, but only to the extent that it furthers US foreign policy in the region. I don't think we should accept at face value that "development" will the core motivator in those policy decisions. As explained in the film, AFRICOM is concerned with maintaining and extending US economic and military influence to protect it's own, rather less altruistic, interests.

Touche but those were in numbers far smaller compared to my point. Don't make the exception the rule. Point is, the vast majority of African Americans were betrayed by their own people. At the time, it was based on tribe, but it's dumb to now say "Well, you have to be loyal to Africa because you originally came from there and you shouldn't be in the US military". Come on, what about Irish? What about Germans?
Loyalty ended when one tribe conquered the next and sold them.

Nope. They were not in smaller numbers. They were in millions. Majority of the tribes in West African countries were not involved in the slave trade, just few of them. Not an entire country or the entire continent. The continent itself was captured and colonized by the buyers except Ethiopia. You should be prepared to give long & painful evidence if you mention things like the Africans sold other Africans into slavery. I will not get into that since it wasn't your point.

Gen Ward was heading into retirement before he was promoted & appointed the Commander. Vice Admiral Robert T. Moeller not Ward developed & wrote the manual for U.S Africom and initially was supposed to be the 1st Commander. Ward's appearance as a black man played a role. It is not a debate. You need to research how Africa tribes treated slaves when there were no prison systems in Africa. It was the opposite of the Europeans. You should also research how African tribes & families especially African mothers whose lives were devastated by the loss of their loved ones stolen by Europeans. That effect was incorporated into & heightened tribalism. Its PART (notice the key word part) of why you see some ongoing conflicts in few African countries. To add more fuel into fire, US Africom (of all people) was looking for a base on the continent. Carrying out the wish of US Oil, energy companies & oil politicians. Slaves were more like Butlers, servants, maids, etc. Most times they were caught after tribal conflicts or a convicted criminal. The thing is Africans never laid their hands on them, they were still treated with human dignity & respect. The master could marry his female servant if she chooses and they will have kids.The male servant will work just enough to buy his....

Great vid! I noticed other videos say "Bush's plot against africa". It is worth noting that now that now that Obama is in the white house, it does not mean that any US interests fade.Now it is no less Bush's plot than it is Obama's. In fact I might be the first to argue that the reason Obama is president is that our government wants to fool us into thinking we really control what high level politicians do. Unfortunately most of my fellow black americans have already been fooled. Sad but true.

Th3wai, you make interesting points but I think you may be missing a fundamental reality. Nations do not act solely for altruistic reasons. Each has only limited resources and must be very judicious when expending their wealth. I offer that you may want to consider whether or not the efforts (as a whole) not only support national goals but also improve the lives of those the programs are meant to help.

What are you talking about? The only African country that welcomed US Africom on the continent was Liberia. That was just the government's choice and not the peoples choice. The rest 51/52 countries rejected the U.S military command. Is that what you mean by few African countries? You need to find a Ghanaian forum somewhere and read how bitter the people are against U.S Africom in anticipation of Obama's visit.

3. Assume countering Chinese and Russian influence in the region is a component (not the entire reason) for U.S. actions. So what? Have you read about the Sudanese bombing campaign backed by the Chinese so they could get their oil pipeline. What aide that come from the Russians/Chinese contain any human rights or good governance stipulations? None.

2. Look at the statistics and you will find that, by far, the US give more money to humanitarian efforts than any other nation by far. Some will say that as a percentage of GDP the U.S. is not the largest percentage giver. To me, that is not a relevant statistic for two reasons:
(1) Amount of dollars matters to accomplishing anything.
(2) Those statistics fail to account for the huge contributions of faith-based organizations - again, far larger than any other country.

I think it makes more sense to see AFRICOM as a response to growing Chinese and Russian investment in the region, in what may well be a new "scramble for Africa". I expect that "development" has a lot more to do with access to natural resources (Nigeria), the war against terror (Somalia) and strategic geopolitical interests (Egypt).

One-third of all US aid goes to Israel and Egypt, followed by Colombia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc. Humanitarian aid is rarely aimed at those who need it most. It almost is always an extension of foreign policy, and often conditional on it being spent on US products and services.

This video misses the larger point:
1. Security is a fundamental requirement for development, in Africa or elsewhere. AFRICOM helps African countries build their security capacity. Read any of a host of books on the security issues within Africa and this will be evident.
2. The U.S. Dept of Defense is the largest provider of humanitarian assistance in the world.
3. AFRICOM is integrated with USAID and Dept of State, first of its kind.
4. AFRICOM focuses on development, defense, and diplomacy.

1. It's true, AFRICOM does indeed helps African countries build their security capacity, but only to the extent that it furthers US foreign policy in the region. I don't think we should accept at face value that "development" will the core motivator in those policy decisions. As explained in the film, AFRICOM is concerned with maintaining and extending US economic and military influence to protect it's own, rather less altruistic, interests.

Anyone here wondering what the USA's annual humanitarian budget amounts to? If so, a few quick searches will show you it compares quite well to its military budget when compared to the next 45 countries on that list. It turns out the USA is not as evil as some may want you to think.
