  • oh what I wouldn't give to wake up tomorrow morning as Anne Hathaway!

  • "I can sing higher." Lmfao xD I love her & how she got a whole 10 seconds in this entire thing and walks off stage. <333333

  • so cute and talented! :D

  • Thank you - this is a marvelous moment from Musical Theatre history.

  • was this emcee'd by William H Macy...it sounds just like him

  • whos the red head chick?

  • @ThirteenthBlessing That'd be Ms. Bernadette Peters

  • @blackpython Oooo

  • @ThirteenthBlessing Hello - who is the red head chick? Granted - she is putting us on, but read the description of who appears briefly.

  • @Blinglover Bernadette Peters

  • i would love to hear her do some more sondheim.

  • I didn't know she could sing!

  • I would've loved to see her as Christine in the 2004 movie.

  • @miep8675 naw, Emmy was perfect, I like Anne, but I don't think she's really all that great of an actress.

  • Why isn't she Eliza in the upcoming remake of My Fair Lady?

  • @roccoh21 that is a very good question

  • @roccoh21 because she's playing Judy Garland instead

  • She's great. LOVE the song.

She has quite a quick vibrato though. It sounds like she's nervous. Which is completely understandable, of course. Haha.

  • is it just me or does she look like jennifer garner here???

  • anne hathaway is gonna be a great judy garland

  • She was absolutely brilliant in the "Once Upon a Time in Springfield" 20th anniversary episode last month, IMO. ^_^ She would definitely make a great Disney lead (or supporting, doesn't matter, since most of them sing, anyway lol) role with that voice ^_^

  • love annie. So beautifull girl. First woman in the world.

  • Awesome. What it's all about!

  • shes amazing.

  • i would not pick anne over bernadette!

  • I don't like her vibrato, but the woman can sing.

  • the short guy went on to play george on sinefeld

  • Well, actually, this was filmed in 2005 so Jason Alexander was already famous for Seinfeld at this point. That's why they had him perform.

  • In the business, we call it humor

  • jason alexander on stage makes my skin crawl...*shiver*

  • We've got the makings of a revival of Merrily We roll along here! who else agrees?

  • She's not the world's best singer, but she doesn't claim to be. She's pleasant, I'd love to hear her in a musical movie (Ella Enchanted does not count). Plus, this song is deceptively difficult, since she's not really trained it's probably more difficult for her. She's in the same league as say, Amy Adams. Not amazing, but entertaining, enjoyable. She did a nice job. I hope she does Carousel with Hugh Jackman, I think it'd sound really sweet.

  • She's also playing Judy Garland!

  • She's actually classically trained- and was supposed to be in the film version of Phantom.

  • True, I think she would've done as well as Emmy did...I think Anne sings even better, actually :)

  • I love Bernadette Peters entrance!

  • Comment removed

  • Bernadette Peters is lovely.

  • Wow, I never knew that Jason Alexander could sing. He's pretty good!

  • Yeah, he sings in the Cinderella movie. The Whitney Houston version.

  • He originated the role he's singing here, on Broadway, when "Merrily" had it's brief run.

  • i love anne voice and the way she sings...

  • wow ann hathaway is great i knew she could sing but WOW shes a broadway starlet or at least she should be one :)

  • Congratulations and good luck Anne on winning the role of Judy Garland.

  • George and Will are singing together...love it

  • oh

    my

    god

    she is so unbelievably talented......gah!

nvm being my favorite actress. since she's been exposed as a singer, she might as well be my favorite singer too!

is there anything the gorgeous, talented Miss Anne Hathaway can't do??

    xD

    love it! 5 million stars!

    ♥♥Kani92♥♥

  • "is there anything the gorgeous, talented Miss Anne Hathaway can't do??"

    Date me.

  • ahahaha! aww don't be like that.

    she can't date me either but that's because i'm a girl. =p

    maybe i should've said:

"is there anything the gorgeous, talented Miss Anne Hathaway can't do ... in regards to entertainment."

but that would also be wrong because she's a giver and donates her time and efforts towards good causes.

i don't exactly know how to word it without making you right.

    oh well xD

  • It's quite all right. I've booze to comfort me; what more do I need?

  • anne for elphie!

  • I agree she should play Elphaba if they ever make a Wicked movie!

  • @Friscom99 - Her voice is much too high for Elphaba, but I'd love to see her be Glinda.

  • And I just read that Anne has signed on to play Judy Garland in an upcoming movie...

  • yeah, i just read that too!! Its in a movie & also on the stage. That should be really awesome... i look forward to it.

  • i read that too. she deserves that role. she's such an amazing performer!

  • omg she's fantastic :) love this song....had no idea she had such a voice...

  • Beautiful! Charming! Alive! Let's bring back movie musicals--Anne Hathaway shines!

  • GAH, it's so cool to find out your favourite actress is also TRAINED in singing (cooler than just an actress trying to sing, if you know what I mean). Love it.

  • anne hathaway isn't normal :D :D

    she's an all-rounder....life's unfair : (

  • i think anne hathaway is definitely perky enough to be galinda (wicked) but not she doesn't have the good witch looks. nor does she have the elphaba qualities. actually, i dont think she fits nessa either. then again, she has only done one movie where shes not the nice, happy, type and her voice is strong enough to play a variety of wicked characters. as long as she gets in a musical (movie), i think she has a high chance of winning many awards (oscars, golden globes, etc). so talented

  • But one must remember, a few years ago people were saying she could only play princess types.

I could also see her as Lucy in Jekyll and Hyde, but I doubt that movie is going to happen now.

  • I was nooot expecting that from Ella Enchanted! lol

But her vibrato annoys me...it's really fast.

  • I agree it is very fast but I read on imdb she performed at Carnegie Hall with All-East Chorus twice. In these days that's a very high accomplishment. But I admit judging from these videos I don't think she would be considered All East quality now. But that was definitely several years ago and things change over time so who am I to complain. :)

  • she was actually one of New York City's top ranking sopranoes. if you haven't heard her singing opera-y, look up 'anne hathaway - if i could only wish the world away' its outstanding

  • "she was actually one of New York City's top ranking sopranoes."

    HAH. NO.

I love Anne, but she is definitely NOT one of NYC's top ranking sopranos. She has a nice voice, but she should work on her breathe and support.

  • she actually was one of New York's top ranking soprano's under the age of 15.

so KitsuneRW, I suggest you get your facts straight before exposing your idiocy.

  • have you heard her sing opera? she's amazing. she wouldn't have been the top pick for the phantom of the opera if she hadn't been a great singer.

  • yeah, she has a stunning classical voice!

She would have been a superb Christine, oh well, theres always broadway...

  • I don't understand your aggression. Could you please post a source for her supposed rank? I wasn't aware she was in a competition.

I also know classically trained singers when I hear them, and I can tell that she needs more breath support.

Also, she's not 15 anymore. She's in the big leagues now. Being a top ranking soprano under 15 isn't going to cut it .

I don't understand how critiquing her voice is idiotic.

  • I'm really sorry if I came across as aggressive, I didn't mean to.

If sure she was very nervous during this performance, therefore her breath control was a little off.

I apoligise for sounding rude. I guess I was. sorry.

  • That's very true -- she not doubt was nervous -- who wouldn't be!! But I do adore the group of people in this video. I love each and every one of them.

Hugh Jackman actually wants to do a Carousel remake with her, and since that will give her time to work on the beeeaaauitful R & H songs, she won't have any nerves on the recording. That's actually a film pair I would LOVE to see.

  • Hugh Jackman!*swoon*

    they would have wonderful chemistry!

  • good thing she's got an academy nominated acting career to back up her crap singing eh? (im being sarcastic)

  • She has never sung opera. "If I Could Only Dream This World Away" is a pop/classical song by Andrew Lloyd Webber - it is no where near an opera aria. And it doesn't matter if you deny this, because it's the truth. If you walk up to Webber and ask him, he'll tell you what he composes is not opera. (Operatic in style, perhaps, but not musically)

  • I'm not gonna deny it. I didn't know that it wasn't opera. Now I know. I'm not gonna disagree or argue with you, if that's what you were anticipating.

  • Jason Alexander AND Anne Hathaway AND Stephanie D'Abruzzo all on one stage??

    there is a god<3

  • I had no idea she could sing! Oh my gosh, they should get her to do Eliza for the new My Fair Lady. Anybody but Kiera Knightley, please.

  • EW! they were planning on getting Keira Knightley?

    THE 14-YEAR OLD BOY!!!

God, what a shitty cast...Anne Hathaway definitely should play Eliza!

  • she can sing! he voice is so naturall

  • Haha, I love Bernadette.

  • that voice is her oscar i bet, i gaurantee shell win an oscar as soon as she does a musical

  • oscars are for film; tony is the award for theatre

  • I think he/she meant a movie musical.

  • she sounds like a disney princess voiceover

  • She has that beautiful, lilting, high and ultra-feminine voice, and Disney is known to hire that 'type' for it's princesses and such.

  • Anne Hathaway is more of a logical choice for Nessarose, not Elphaba.

  • agreed<3 I never even thought of anne in Wicked but she'd be a great Nessa.

  • AHH! Thank you.

    That's exactly what I thought :)

  • Okay so everybody in this video is totes amazing.

  • Everybody in this video is totes amazing.

  • I love Merrily We Roll Along. Such an underrated musical.

  • damn,she can sing..love her!

  • I love this song!!! So, so much!

  • She's fantastic. I wish she had played in Phantom like she was set to do. :-(

  • I agree. Emmy just didn't have a mature enough voice. As pretty as her voice is, it's not suited for Phantom. Anne would have made a great Christine.

  • Anne is a great singer!

  • She's got a great voice

  • Fabulous!!! I love Eric McCormack!

  • Thanks for sending this along! I am such a Sondheim fan that I find this clip a treasure.

  • whooo!! increible k bn canTa...

  • I was there live and it was 10x more amazing. She would be great! in My Fair Lady. Does Keira even sing?

  • yes, she can. I mean she'll still need training but yeah she can.

  • Anne is the best ! that's why we love her!!

  • I remember someone's thinking about the My Fair Lady remake; maybe they should get Anne Hathaway! Her voice should be better than Keira Knightley!

  • or they could dub Keira's voice with Anne's!

  • Omg, shes really good! I'm impressed! Never would have expected that from her.

  • Speachless!! wow!! she is great!! :D

  • wow she's really, really good. I always liked anne. Now I know why, she's not just a "hollywood" actress she has depth too.

  • Has this been on TV yet??

  • she sounds like Belle from Beauty and the Beast <3 Love Anne Hathaway

  • yeah! she would be a great Belle!

  • I saw this on Perez Hilton. I was actually there! I totally forgot Anne Hathaway was there. This was prior to Brokeback, Devil Wears Prada, etc. Hilarious!

  • Wow, I didn't even know she could sing. She's really good! Idk if she's good enough to be Elphie though.

  • I'm really not sure...I think it may be sung by a woman.

  • Does anybody know if in Saturday night, is what more do i need sung by a man or a woman or is it a duet?

  • What do you think of Anne being Elphaba for the upcoming Wicked movie. This just proves she could sing it.

  • Not for me. This proves nothing except that there is no more beautiful woman on the planet.

  • Are you kidding? Anne shows so much power with her voice here and she could rock Elphie. How does this prove that there are no more beautiful women.....she is stunning.

  • We have a very different idea of power. She does nothing here to suggest she could cope with Defying Gravity. I'm willing to be convinced, but not by this. Very nice voice but not Elphaba.

  • Really, with this, I picture 'The Wizard and I' first. I am just saying that with some more voice training I think she could really pull it off.

  • i completely agree w/ u i think she'd be FANTASTIC!!!!!

  • Thank you. It is nice to see someone agree with it. I'M NOT ALONE! lol.

  • i thought i was alone lol

  • Nope.....it looks like neither of us are alone.

  • No. I think she would be better as Nessarose or maybe Glinda.

  • You're right, she'd make a good Nessa.

  • not glinda she def not a glinda Kristen Bell should be Glinda!!!

  • Late reaction: But I completely agree! She's good, really good. But has more of the sweetness from Nessa, I can't picture her as a Wicked Witch, she has'nt got the power for Elphaba. But, maybe she can, because we haven't seen her as a evil person in a movie..

  • I think Anne would make a great G(a)linda!

  • wow! this blew me away!

    it was amazing!!!

anne hathaway, who knew she could sing so beautifully?

  • omg

    bernadette is freaking amazing!!!!

  • I think her voice is better than Emmy Rossum's but Emmy has more of a Victorian look that fit Phantom. Anne looks more "modern". If you want to hear more of Anne's soprano check out her in Carnival by searching Anne Hathaway Carnival

  • Anne is amazing. I've never seen this before, she has a great voice. She looks great in blue too.

  • I don't like her vibrato. But she does well!

  • I don't care if it's a show or not, I don't like the implication that Anne can sing better than Bernadette!! Bernadette is the Queen of Broadway and song!

  • TOTALLY!

    bernadette rules!

  • Anne does well. But I think your right. Anne gets a little to nasaly. And her vibrato is weird. I don't know why I don't like it, but I don't.

  • ...Damn. Anne has got some pipes! Of course Bernadette is a musical goddess.

  • I just had to watch this again. Does anyone know if she has had other live performances?

  • funtubelicous, go onto my page and you'll find a video of Anne singing Yes My Heart from when she was in Carnival in 2002.

    it's amazing!!

  • I wish I could have watched this live. Thanks for posting wyou17. It would be great to hear Hathaway sing again in future shows. She's a very talented singer and actress.

  • I had a great time there memories

  • "...I can sing it higher..."

Oh Bernadette, how I love you so.

    And Anne is amazing!

  • She's not bad but her vibrato (and some other stuff I can hear) is funky.

  • WOW that was good

  • That was Bernadette Peters (who did appear as Karen's sister on Will and Grace) not Debra Messing who came on and sang too high...

  • love it!!! anne hathaway is great!!

  • WOW! Thanks for posting this amazing clip! MORE MORE MORE!!!

  • I love Eric McCormack

  • Never mind.

  • Is this from the Stepehn Sondheim a Celebratio at Carnigie hall? It's not featured on that DVD, but it could have been cut...

  • Sondheim's birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl.

  • She's going to be so PERFECT as Sarah in Guys & Dolls!

  • I knew it that anne could sing.. I just hope when Universal Studios decides to to do a WICKED movie soon.. I hope she will be considered to play Elphaba..

  • a WICKED folm is possibly the stupidest idea i've ever heard.

let the studios ruin wicked along with rent and every other musical they've tried to put on screen

  • I don't think she can go low enough for Elphie. Isn't she a soprano?

  • anne would make a GREAT glinda in wicked!

  • eww i think if they made a movie it would screw it all up. you don't get the magic of it unless you see it onstage and without the magic it's absolutely nothing. i definitely think they should leave it alone. it's rocking broadway so they sould leave it at that

  • Part of the magic of Wicked is that so much is accomplished on stage. Hollywood magic isn't as impressive on film. The raw size of the show in front of you is what appeals to me. A movie just can't do that.

  • I think you just described what everyone was thinking perfectly!!

    well done you!

*i realise how sarcastic that sounds but still :)*

  • she's far too pretty to play elphaba

  • Not shocked at all. She was one of the top soprano's on the East Coast at one point (as far as under 18's go, I think).

  • Are you talking about ones who were already in films? Because, I think she's great, but I know people who are better. And the Met Opera is on the East coast, and no matter how much I love Anne, those women could beat out her (and most women on the planet) in a heartbeat.

  • OMG anne hathaway. what the heck? why did i not know that she could sing so amazingly?!

  • Bernadette she makes my heart jump !

  • this is reaaallly good! apparently, anne and katie holmes are up for roles in the movie version of 'nine.' based on this performance i'm rooting for anne...if anything.

  • I wish Anne would have done Phantom, too... :(

  • same here =[ she would have been awesome.

  • oh Bernadette....

  • Comparisons to Emmy Rossum aside, I wish Anne had done Phantom (even though I sort of loathe it and don't think even she could have saved it from being a pretentious, dull piece of cinema), simply so I could have more recordings of that lovely voice of hers. Her voice mixing with Patrick Wilson's (whose voice could bring the choirs of angels to orgasm)? Yes, please! Thanks for the video! Bernadette was hilarious!

  • bernadette peters just about made my life.

  • Anne Hathawy has a somewhat annoying vibrato.

  • i love anne. she is amazing! she can dance too!

  • anne looked nervous at first...alexander is fantastic!!i just saw him as jean valjean in New York!!amaaahhzing!!!

  • anne was originally supposed to star as christine in the movie version of "phantom of the opera," but she couldn't because of scheduling conflicts, so emmy was asked to do it instead.

  • wow, Anne Hathaway is like a mini Sutton Foster. I love her voice!

  • I didnt know she can sing?!!

  • I can sing higher....lol she's so funny

  • Hahahahahaha did they intentionally put "Grace" on stage?

  • wow i have hear Anne sing berfore but not like this shes great!, ad everyone else of course was great but i have to say Bernadette is such a funny person! i love her!
