i find it a bit heartbreaking and interesting that even in the opening of the film, the introduction to the character you get the sense that there is a hole in Carl's life. He sleeps on one side of the bed, sits at one side of the table and it's obvious someone once slept and sat on the other--it's shown that his wife's passing affected him deeply even before you were told their story or that he even had a wife
Unfortunatly the first time I heard this song was on Gilligans Island where they made a musical of Hamlett so everytime I hear 1:19 I hear "I ask to be, or not to be"
Yes! This is PERFECT! Beautiful!!! Thank you for uploading. Im using this clip to teach my 3rd graders about classical music. How they are listening to it all of the time and don't even know it. I can teach them a little about CARMEN using this clip.
It's weird how he apparently couldn't walk the stairs of his own house, but had no trouble trying to outrun a dog and oversized bird in the jungle while pulling a boy and a house.
I laughed so hard, this was probably one of the funniest scenes in any cartoon movie I have ever watched! It's really funny because we all know this is true for an old man who lives alone.
Lol, at this point I was laughing, just seconds before you were given this huge montage of his life showing a long happy life full of unfulfilled dreams. Then you see Carl is the cantankerous old man character that goes "Git off mah lawn!"
My brothers spent like TEN WHOLE MINUTES, laughing in the movie theater after Carl tried cracking his back. I was like, "Omg, shut upp. It wasn't that funny -_-".
Geez man! I am 36 and I already follow this kind of morning routines after my wife left me for another guy... fantastic movie, thanks for posting this memorable part.
@annagong963 I was wondering the same thing so I studied it and you can kind of see it between the bed and the nightstand before he gets up. It's hard to see because it's the same color as the wall behind him.
Love the fact that he is still sleeping like she is still there, as evidenced by the fact her side is straight and unmessed. All his routines carry forth, and so does he in her spirit.
great filmmaking to seamlessly incorporate such a phenomenal piece of music. With habanera's motif starting in a minor key (after the sadness of ellie's passing) and progressing into a major optimistic tone, I think that shows the strength of Carl to carry on, stubbornly. This transition is so important for the film
this whole scene with carl by himself is a bit sad but they make it so hilarious that it makes the tears go away after the tragic scene of ellies death. love this movie!!!
omgg i lovee thisss!!!!! lmaoo its sooo funnyyy when hes goin down the stairs, and if you guys notice, when he wakes up, the sun is shinning on ellie's side of the bed, and same when hes eating. its soo sad :(, btw does anyone know what song this is?
Gorgeous movie. By the way, the last scene with Carl's house in the middle of an urban development reminds me of the picutre book I read when I was a kid... called "The Little House" or something. Made such an impression on me when I was 6-7 years old. I feel like reading this again :)
This is, like, my favourite of the movie. I like it how the thing that goes down the stairs got stuck and Carl hit it. Also when he have to unlock all the keys. LOL
the song of this scene is a famous opera, right?? how is it called? someone please help! :-)
