@education4you The debate was good and I thank you for sharing. I feel Bob had more points and won the debate hands down. The opposition that was chosen in form of a Chinese person who has immigrated to america taking away a job of an american professor is the first flaw. The greater irony is that the skills of the opposition person is the outcome of the same chinese education which he is trying to pin down.
I thought the debate was interesting. While I side with Bob Compton on the issue I think he presented a weak argument, and his debate opponent helped point this out. To Compton, the value of science and math is so that students can be future engineers who can make high salaries in the tech industry. What he neglects is the value those cognitive subjects have to the wider society, outside of economics, and the issue of whether science and math are really being taught well in our schools.
