I just realized this is from 2007 lol. Either way, this was great and still applies to the latest version. Although if you feel an updated lesson is called for I'd love to see that. Cheers!
I have this troubling question: What's the purpose of Fireworks? What're its strengths over other programs like Illustrator and Photoshop?? From what I know it's just a mix of both programs with a few restrictions.
@TheShokoor YW and glad you enjoyed it. I sure should update these some day. So much has changed in recent versions but Fireworks is still a great tool in any version.
@crazyshitvideo Yeah, Photoshop, Illustrator, lots of ways to do the effect. Gotta remember this screencast was created like 5 years ago. Fireworks had vector-based masking long before Photoshop. I should probably update the lesson.
BTW, checked your profile and saw your dog videos. What breed are those? They're beautiful dogs!
@Tutorialviewer Lots of crossover between both programs but Illustrator is considerably more powerful than Fireworks. I like Fireworks for a lot of this kind of work because it's simple and quick. Illustrator does this kind of effect as well as much more complicated shape combining and masking.
@TheFATutorials I haven't used gimp in years! But I know there are a lot of the same features in both programs. Another free program, Aviary, also includes a lot of features found in commercial graphics programs. It's an interesting time in the industry:-)
@dandarra92 You can use the eraser to soften edges, yes! Downside is you have to track your undo levels because if you go too far you won't be able to restore your images. Neither way is right or wrong, just consider the tradeoffs between both before choosing your method. Also, it's always good to have multiple options for editing.
I'd say learn all you can about basic design principles, color, composition, typography.
No matter what area you specialize in, you'll always build on the basics.
When I went to graphics school, elearning didn't really exist but today it's where I make my living. Visual communication skills are critical - in any industry.
there are lots of ways to do it. quick & dirty way is the magic wand but not always the most refined. check out our site cbtcafe . com/fireworks for selections and masking lessons.
