This is a real song with lyrics?! I always thought that it was some random piece that the Japanese school band just knew how to play and they put it on the album for kicks.
I reckoned the lyrics were something like 'girls all wrapped in flags'... doesn't make any sense but that's what it sounds like to me. Also: 'they're looking for a witch to burn'?
@mrwolf001 It's "girls all acting..." The next word, after repeated listening, seems to be "polite", pronounced p'lite but I'm not 100% certain. Then its "temperature goes down to zero".
@CaptainThrice Thanks Captain, yes it definitely is "temperature goes down to zero". Sounds obvious now that you have pointed it out. Still not sure about some of the other lyrics though.... Cheers
Cool stuff! I didn't know it existed a band version with vocals of this song! Very interesting. Amazing as a big Midnight Oil fan to find unheard music by them.
According to the book "Beds are burning",the song originally contained a stream of consciousness rave from Pete that included the lines "red sails in the fucking sunset".If you listen closley, the only vocals to remain in the song is the phrase "lines of swell round the Byron Pass, mate."
Bakerman was written by Rob Hirst. It never made it onto their 1984 Red Sails in the Sunset in this form. On the album it is a short instrumental piece. Clarinet, trumpet, tuba and maybe a sax too.

Lyrics? sounds like: Boys all rough and tumble, girls are acting ???
???...... down to zero.
Out on the street are roses, red carpet on the ground
in every bedroom there's a hero.
They're lookin' for a wish to burn, they're waiting for the bakers turn
the drums are playing louder up on Military road, the bakerman is laughing cause he's rolling in the dough.
(repeat first verse)
The drums are playing louder in the castle of the king
the bakerman is laughing, but he's never joining in.

This version of Bakerman's a lot better than the album one. Who would have something like this that wasn't a band member? Awesome find!

Wow - where did you get this originally?
So weird to hear after listening to (and loving) the instrumental for years!
It's great - wish it was a bit clearer, but I'm guessing it's come straight off of a demo tape or something?

My wife and I had the flower girls walk down the aisle at our wedding to Bakerman 8 years ago. 400 people thought we were nuts.
Long live the Oils.
